I am so proud of myself.

I don’t really have anyone to tell in RL and I’ve had a LOT of stick for my weight loss recently.

December 2018, I was pushing 23 stone (I gave up weighing myself at 22.7 as it was too depressing, but I got bigger after that, so I’m guessing 23 stone) I’m 5 foot 4 and was a size 22/24. I had gained 12 stone in 4 years because my life went to shit, basically, and I ate crap and drank lager to escape.

Initially, I lost 6 stone and I fell pregnant December 2019 at just over 16 stone. I suffer from HG in pregnancy, so I don’t gain an ounce in my pregnancies due to sickness for 9 long months. I stayed 16 stone until May this year when I decided to change my life.

I cut out all processed food and cook everything from scratch and do intermittent fasting - which isn’t as dramatic as it sounds as I was diagnosed with coeliac disease two years ago, and I don’t want/like (and can’t afford!) the gluten free alternatives, so it’s been easy because I just have to. The option of gorging on McDonalds, pizza and cake after a crap day has been medically removed from me 😆

Today, I weighed 13st 13lb and I am so happy. I know 2 stone since may isn't exactly setting the world alight, but like I said, I’ve changed my life and attitude to food, I don’t see myself as being on a diet. I enjoy food, and enjoy cooking as does my husband (who has lost 30lb since may and is now at his “goal” weight).

I can move so much more freely now. Even at 16 stone, the walk up the hill to school used to leave me sweating, unable to talk and panting. Now, I hardly notice I’ve got to the top and it’s so liberating.

But, I can’t seem to tell anyone in RL. Everyone seems to be so negative. I’ve had friends come out and accuse me of using weight loss jabs or accuse me of having WLS and lying to them about it. It’s so hurtful. I even got told I was too skinny and that I looked ill the other day. I’m a size 14/16. I am in no way skinny!

I just wanted to say to anyone struggling that it is possible. Something just clicked one day. I am 43 and I feel better than ever. I want to get back to a healthy weight of 10 stone, but I know I will now. I’m no longer fighting against myself.

Brilliant.
Ignore the haters. People hate to think that willpower , self restraint and hard work is the answer

What a fantastic achievement, well done OP. 👏👏👏

I lost a lot of weight myself a few years ago, but only about half of what you lost, so I’m completely in awe of what you have done. Having a wardrobe full of clothes which no longer fit you is a nice problem to have, isn’t it? 😉

Anyone who isn’t pleased for you and makes nasty or negative comments is just jealous of you. Their comments are about themselves and their weaknesses and insecurities, not about you. You are better than them. Never, ever forget that.

PumpkinSpiceKatie · 18/11/2023 11:31

Amazing, well done you!

Gosh that was all ME, ME, ME wasn’t it. Sorry. I’m just feeling so much better in myself and I know how I felt 4/5 years ago thinking I could never change my mindset.

Well done you!! Just curious to know if you have done exercise as well or just diet?

No, I don’t exercise now.

When I initially lost the first 6 stone, I did go to the gym 3/4 times a week. I fast walked on the treadmill for 20 mins, and then did ten mins of weights. Then I fell pregnant and I am sick constantly from 5 weeks and basically my life stops until I give birth!

Then we moved areas (went from living with a gym 2 mins walk away to none near and dh working long hours), and between that, a baby/toddler to look after as well as other children and a parent with dementia which has been very stressful, I don’t have the time. I try and walk a bit with my toddler, but my ill parent and advocating for them takes up a lot of my time and energy and is really stressful.

Incredible achievement, OP. I lost 5 stone and have heard every single line about 'getting too thin' and 'starving' myself. It was all bullocks.

Enjoy every moment of your new healthier lifestyle. x

Amazing! Well done you!

Babyroobs · 18/11/2023 13:24

Well done that is an amazing achievement. I have a similar amount to lose but just finding it so hard to lose anything. I don't even gorge on maccies and pizza in the first place.

Foreverdecorating · 18/11/2023 14:54

Wow, that is hugely impressive. I am sorry people are being negative about it. You should be incredibly proud!

Afteropening · 18/11/2023 15:12

i see you’ve stopped exercising OP

I tory understand that a tricky time but… well tricky times do crop up a lot in life and if you embed exercise in to your life… you will find time. Doesn’t need to be a 3 hour gym session! but ensuring that you definitely do set aside time to properly exercise and by that i mean nothing huge…. a 25 min run and 5 minute stretch a couple of times a week and one or two strength training sessions (at home with kettle bells).

beautifulgoldenleaves · 19/11/2023 12:05

Well done
Fantastic weightloss

Hard work, focus, determination all fantastic qualities and characteristics.

Your little one has such a good role model from you with your amazing qualities.

Well done you!

Amazing work OP, and so glad to see its long term habits/changes/lifestyle, you are living in your success!!

ignore the naysayers, I'm guessing some of them are overweight themselves? It can be hard for some people to see others succeed, especially if they're unhappy with themselves. Have some sympathy for them, but don't let their comments touch your heart.

Menora · 20/11/2023 09:48

Amazing! Well done!!
I also get stick for WL, people keep telling me to stop now before I look too skinny. I am a size 12/14 I am NOT skinny!

No, none of them are significantly overweight. Bar one who had a gastric sleeve 5 years ago and is really the one with a bee in her bonet as she keeps telling me it’s okay to be honest with her about my WLS, that she will keep my secret.

I was “the fat one”. I only met most of them once I had a gained the weight about 7 years ago, so most of them have never known me as the slim person I was before I piled on 13 stone (My maths was wrong yesterday. I was always 10 stone as an adult then zoomed up to 23 in about 3 and a half years).

People don’t like change, I get that. What really gets me is being accused of eating disorders etc when my eating habits and constantly turning down food are obviously due to celaic! You can offer me as many slices of cake as you like, but if it’s not gluten free and I am sure it’s not contaminated, I’m not touching it with a barge pole! It pisses me off when people think it’s an excuse and then twist it to suit their own narrative, or they do it to prove a point.

One person I don’t see anymore is the one that really sparked things off this summer when it became obvious I was losing more weight. She made a gluten free cake at a bbq, make a big song and dance about how long it had taken and how expensive and what a pain it has been and presented it to me. Only, she had put crushed non GF Oreos all over the top. Obviously, that would have made me really ill (she didn’t understand I couldn’t just leave that bit), but that along with the fact I brought my own cooked GF sausages and salad I had cut up in my own kitchen to eat so I wouldn’t have to worry about cross contamination just cemented proof of my “disordered” eating and they haven’t let it lie since.

I’ve pulled away from a lot of them, because to be constantly accused of lying or of having an eating disorder is really upsetting.

Those who criticise people for cutting carbs out, by saying it's unhealthy to cut out a whole food group never understand that

  • vegetables, salad and fruit are carbs
  • it doesn't seem to be a problem to cut all fat out of their diet by buying 0% fat products
You have done brilliantly @bahhamburgers and absolutely deserve a 'mememe' thread!
bahhamburgers · 20/11/2023 10:34

Also, I get a lot of raised eyebrows at the celiac diagnosis as I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 41, two years ago.

There was certainly a lot of disbelief in DH family as I didn’t get sick before. I’ve had a lot of “oh, that’s convenient, it never bothered you eating my food before” type comments.

I started getting really ill after eating bread and pasta when my baby was about 6 months old. I used my insurance to see a consultant and he had a hunch it was celiac, he did all the tests and he was right. Apparently, you can have he gene and then it can can just be triggered one day, or you can have no symptoms at all and then something like a virus, or pregnancy can spark it.

And now, since I have cut out all gluten entirely, if I even accidentally inject the smallest bit all hell breaks loose. It’s horrendous. It happened to me 3 times in the early days and I am so, so careful now as I never want it to happen again. And also, gluten free food is full of horrible fillers that make me feel sluggish and crap so I prefer to stick to meat/fish/veg/fruit that I’ve prepared myself.

But to some people, that way of eating + weight loss and the fact that they think I am making up celiac = eating disorder.

bahhamburgers · 20/11/2023 11:02

@BIWI oh I know. It’s maddening. I eat all full fat greek yogurt, eat meat with fat on, coconut oil, olive oil. You can bet I’ve had comments about that too, I can’t win!

And GF carbs are a beast of their own anyway. The ingredients in GF bread and biscuits/cakes etc are awful and make me feel crap and have headaches so I don’t want them. Give me a steak or a slab of salmon with a roasted head of cauliflower any day! That’s the food I crave now, which is something I would never have dreamed I would have said 5 years ago.

I'm very proud of you too! That's an incredible achievement, well done! 👏👏👏👏

And a big thank you because you've given me hope I can do it too🤞

Hi op

I'm just adding to the chorus of very well done to you. What a fantastic achievement.

You have worked hard and deserve to celebrate your success.

I'm not celiac but understand from friends the impact of cross contamination. You are rightly prioritising your health and feeling the benefits.

My take is that you are no longer the fat one in the group. When people see others make positive changes in their life, it makes them question their own life and choices.

Well done again, all the very best to you.
