Yes, it does work if you have a lot to lose. I think most people do put at least some weight back on afterwards if they don't ease off with say, 5:2 or stick with the maintenance which is low carb Mediterranean diet.
I only had about a stone and a half to lose to get to normal BMI and I lost it in 8 weeks. By then though my hair started to fall out even though I was really careful with nutrition.
I was also only able to do it in lockdown - it was early 2021 when I did it. As soon as normal life resumed I couldn't do it at all. And when I stopped I went absolutely mad for alcohol and carbs and put the weight back on quickly, and more. I hadn't binged or emotionally eaten for years and it really took me by surprise - partly it could have been stress and anxiety caused by Covid times or other things going on, but I do think it was down to the diet being too extreme for me.
I couldn't have done much exercise on it either, I only used to do walking and yoga back then. Now I go to the gym three times a week on top of that and focused on building a good exercise regime before I started looking at diet again. I think it buggered up my metabolism for a little while after as it was so easy to gain back the weight.
I'm doing 5:2 and generally 16:8 at the moment, though fairly gently and treating more as a variable calories plan. I don't do a fast day on a gym day. I've done 5:2 before and also put the weight back on. I think the difference is now I have a good exercise routine and won't have to change very much eating wise to switch to maintenance as it isn't too severe or different, and I see it very much as a long term thing. I'll probably do 6:1 after I've lost the weight. I've lost 12lbs in four weeks so far and have about a stone and a half to go.
So I wouldn't advise people against Very Fast 800, particularly if you have a lot to lose, but maybe switch to 5:2 or 4:3 if it fits with your life better.
