bringitbacktome · 10/08/2023 12:50

Today -2 egg omelette fried with fry light 1 cal per spray
Lunch -tuna Mayo and cucumber sandwich on wholemeal from greggs
And stupidly I've had a small butterfly cake from a colleague which was 170 cals

Try downloading Nutracheck app, it will have all the U.K. processed foods.

I put your foods in and I make it around 640 calories depending on what size eggs you used (so more if large eggs, less if small).

Miajk · 10/08/2023 13:35

Life is too short to worry about calories.

Eat what you want, when you're hungry. Get your 5 a day. Move a little. It's really not that complicated.

Source: I've lost 60lbs without counting a single calorie or restricting any foods.

Minikievs · 10/08/2023 13:43

About 700. But log it somewhere on an app eg MFP if you are wanting to count calories. Why are you asking?

xyz111 · 10/08/2023 13:44

Use MyFitnessPal. Takes the guess work out!!

xyz111 · 10/08/2023 13:44

That sandwich from Greggs could be anything from 300-600 depending on the type of tuna, Mayo, bread etc.

Icedlatteplease · 10/08/2023 13:49

What else was in the omelette?
600cal definitely probably upwards of 700cal

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

If I ate what I wanted, when i was hungry, I would end up upwards of 24 stone. In a recent year and half of stress I gained between 2-3 stone. If we all lost weight by not worrying about calories, apps like my fitness pal and nutracheck would not exist.

For some (actually I'd hazard most)of us my fitness pal and calorie counting is an absolute godsend.

FergusSingsTheBIues · 10/08/2023 13:56

700

Pammela2 · 10/08/2023 13:57

I think about 800 cals! The sandwich from Greg’s is about 450 I think!

I do this. I remain a fat fucker.

FergusSingsTheBIues · 10/08/2023 13:59

yea sorry 800 I meant to say as well

190 omelette
170 fairy cake

I also thought 450 for sarnie

SabrinaThwaite · 10/08/2023 14:04

Omelette about 150 calories
Sandwich about 340 calories (as per website)
Cake 170 calories

Total 660 calories

Obviously there's an element of mindfulness and really putting in the work to connect with your hunger, understand when you're eating out of boredom or for comfort, etc.

Most people don't want to put in that work and instead yo-yo diet redownloading myfitness pal every year. That's why these apps still exist, because their customers never actually maintain weight loss and keep coming back. You don't think that's a bit broken?

Miajk · 10/08/2023 14:15

ApolloandDaphne · 10/08/2023 13:59

The when you're hungry part is crucial. Physically hungry, not bored/snacky/sad.

Most of the people I know who've lost weight (and kept it off) didn't lose it by dieting. Dieters I know just cycle from fat to thin constantly.

We like to lie to ourselves about how much and why we eat, or drink, or move. It requires a change of habits, not eating in front of the TV mindlessly, or ignoring nutrition completely, or drinking a bottle of wine every few days.

PermanentTemporary · 10/08/2023 14:17

Id say 700.

I can understand im eating out of boredom and still do it though.

I like mfp because it's unemotional but writing everything I eat down is a kind of mindfulness too. If MFP renamed itself 'Sustenance Journalling' it might be the new big thing.

reducemug · 10/08/2023 14:25

2 eggs will be around 160 calories depending on size of egg. Large egg is approximately 78-80 calories each. Was it just the eggs? No ham or veg?

Tuna around 170
Mayo is difficult. Depends if it’s full fat or low fat
Bread, did it come with butter? How thick etc. I’d say minimum of 450 calories inc tuna but more depending on the mayo and butter.

Cake as you’ve said is 170.

SisterAgatha · 10/08/2023 14:26

Greggs publish their nutritional data. It’s on their website.

No

We as a society are fat because we have too great and easy access to food

If you overeat you become hungry quicker and it takes more food to stop you feeling hungry. If you don't eat much anyway then actually it doesn't take much to be full.

For example when I ate when I was hungry and i was 16-17 stone, I could easily go back to a buffet for seconds or thirds and still be hungry enough to eat dessert. I lost 4 stone and I found one visit to the buffet unbearably full, in fact i coildnt even manage the breakfast buffet the next day.

If you are fat, listening to your hunger will do bugger all, your body has already learnt to overeat.

If you comfort eat, but only have access to one carrot, you can only comfort eat that one carrot. You are unlikely to become fat.

If you comfort eat have access to a packet of bakery cookies, a Chinese takeaway, and nice bread, you are likely to become fat.

There was an argument in parliament that after ww2 ended rationing should actually continue because it was actually good to restrict access to food for the general population. For course business not health won that argument.

For those of us who naturally eat beyond the needs of or body, weight maintenance is likely to be a constant struggle. I ended up losing around 6 stone with my fitness pal. I'd never have lost that weight without it, I like food, I like fatty food and yes I comfort eat. And yes I kept (most of) it off for around 6 years. But I only did that because I kept mfp and about every 4-6months starting logging again to reset my diet and my appetite

Mfp is a way of resetting the body cues when they have gone wrong.

Yes I'm back up to 15 stone now. I know full well its because I have had a shocking year and I comfort eat. I can be mindful of that fact all I liked, doesn't mean at that point in time I was ready to stop. I could mindful of only eating when i was hungry, but if my body was still telling me I was hungry after 3 Christmas shortbread biscuits and another 3 might do the trick Listening to my hunger really wasn't doing much good.

Weight loss and management is a precarious balance between emotion, motivation and physical cues.

All I'm hearing is your advocated approach didn't work for you, just like it doesn't for most people.

Mine certainly worked for me to lose and maintain my lost weight so I'm not sure why an approach that clearly doesn't work would make any sense instead.

I don't count calories, don't worry about my clothes not fitting, I'm a comfortable weight at a BMI of 20 after being a yo-yo Dieter before that my whole life, being obese at one point too.

Not only am I smaller and healthier, life is also better. Not constantly thinking about food, restricting, not being able to have X or z. I know regularly forget I have ice cream or chocolate in the kitchen because there's no strong pull when you always allow yourself these foods but choose to learn moderation & eating for the right reasons.

So you can he that I might have to worked constantly at something and translate that as it does not work....

But you fail to hear that your approach never worked for me and let me to be somewhere in excess of 17stone in the first place

And consider your approach the one I should take?

Well here are the full details of my approach:

  • heavily limit alcohol - for mental health and general health
  • regularly exercise, doing something you enjoy. Be as active as you can, again, for general health not just weight. This means walking, stairs, homes workouts, whatever works
  • incorporate nutrition knowledge - ex. You fancy burger and fries? Fine, but add veg on the side. Stop when you're full
  • no clean plate club - start eating when hungry, stop when full
  • mindful eating - no TV, radio, distractions. Focus on your meal and on how you feel

When bored/sad/stressed, first find a different coping mechanism. Stop telling yourself "I can't have chocolate". Practice moderation until it sticks.

Ex. Have a few squares of chocolate every single day, after dinner and lunch. Remind yourself that actually eating a whole bar or plenty of McDonald's doesn't feel good. No one feels good only eating food like that - either fatigue, or skin breakouts, or poor sleep quality, or even your bowel movements will give you signs you're not functioning at optimal.

You genuinely can say that you have for months done all the above, done the work, done every single step?

Eat what you want when hungry doesn't mean stuff yourself all the time finding any excuse to do so, which a lot of people like to pretend it is. It's hard work, but it's worth it.

I now almost never overeat. I don't gain weight on holiday. Because I've done the work to really resolve WHY I eat and my relationship with food, not just apply a temporary diet plaster.

There's nowt so deaf as those who don't want to hear. I know your approach very well. It works best when you are skinny.

Still in my case I gain at about a stone a year. As I worked out in the first year after I lost the weight and could do all those things successfully. Why I ended up working out I was best relogging calories every 4 months or so.

It also fails miserably when you are injured and can't exercise, at all, for months. or when actually overeating is arguably preferable coping strategy to antidepressants which, incidentally, cause you to gain weight.

If I was programed that way, I would never have reached 17 stone in my early 30's in the first place. I didn't own a scale or calorie count once in my teens or twenties.

mondaytosunday · 10/08/2023 16:33

200 for the omelette,
360 for the sandwich (I looked on MFP)
170 for the fairy cake.
So 730.
I agree @Icedlatteplease! I ate what I wanted for the last year and gained over 10 kilos. Back to MFP and counting calories! 5kg down (need to lose a lot more than just another 5kg though)!
