Coming off Ozempic

supermarketscrunchie · 26/07/2023 10:09

I have been on ozempic for 8/9 months and am now at my goal weight. I lost nearly 2 stones before ozempic and 3 stones on. It's truly been the best thing to happen to me. It's a lifelong dream to be a size 10 and no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't achieve it.

I want to come off it now as feel I need to try to manage without it. It's sooo expensive! I'm so scared of regaining as research suggests this to be common. I have changed certain things in my life now though as I no longer drink and I fast as a general rule (no snacking at night and no breakfast).

Anyone else coming off and feeling nervous? Would be nice to share the experience 😊

I forgot those not taking ozempic can't ask questions without being accused of being goady or it being taken as a personal insult or sign that fat people are hated by that poster or some other such nonsense 🙄

@SarahC50it sounds like you have had good service from your supplier but not all give anything beyond the drug itself. Those are the ones I think are in the wrong. I also think it's wrong how the price has gone up so that those on it and doing well are having to pay out even more to stay on it and achieve their goal.

WilkinsonM · 30/07/2023 19:25

Oh look I've been deleted for calling out behaviour! Interesting

SarahC50 · 30/07/2023 19:39

@WilkinsonM absolutely ridiculous. @AutisticLegoLover I seriously question your motivation for joining this thread. You are thoroughly overinvested and should move on.

Personal attacks aren’t allowed on Mumsnet so keep it polite and your posts won’t get deleted.

SarahC50 · 30/07/2023 19:40

@WilkinsonM I've been deleted too

WilkinsonM · 30/07/2023 20:12

Calling out someone for repeated poor behaviour isn't a personal attack but whatever

supermarketscrunchie · 30/07/2023 20:32

I'm definitely going to give apple cider vinegar a good try! There's no doubt about it it's so much harder to control your appetite off Ozempic. I'm finding fasting gives me a feeling of 'being in control'.

I agree with the poster who said that losing the crutch is scary. It is. I've worked hard to lose the weight though as Ozempic holds your hand but can certainly be overridden and biscuits and ice-cream go down easily regardless.

Twiglets1 et al, I appreciate your debate but would be most grateful if you could start a new thread to debate this issue. I'd like to specifically discuss the physical and psychological responses we users are experiencing when coming off it. Thank you.

Does anyone take apple cider vinegar but also have an issue with heartburn, does it make the heartburn worse?

I often suffer with heartburn but haven't had any since taking ACV. I'm having two glasses a day, with a tablespoon in each. But drink it through a straw - it's a bugger for rotting tooth enamel.

bellac11 · 30/07/2023 21:26

I had WLS and unfortunately Im clearly one of the unlucky ones who has now developed acid and heartburn, its inteferring with my ability to eat.

Ive read mixed things about the vinegar, some saying it would make it worse, others that it promotes the body to reduce the acid.

That must be painful if it's getting in the way of how you eat. I guess the only way you'll know is by trying. Make sure you get organic ACV with the mother in it, which is the bacteria that's used to turn apple cider into vinegar and is beneficial for digestion. It makes it murkier rather than clear. It might be a better version for you to try.

bellac11 · 30/07/2023 21:49

I will give it a try

To be fair its not the 'burn' that is interfering with the eating, its more a sensation of stuckness and indigestion but I suspect its all about acid, I havent had the burn today for example

Im taking probiotics too

SarahC50 · 30/07/2023 21:52

@Inkpotlover stupid question but how do you know if the acv has the mother in it. Do I just buy an organic version from the health food shop.

Sugarplumfury · 30/07/2023 22:07

Because if you've lost a significant amount of weight for the first time in your adult life that means you're now in, or almost in, the healthy BMI bracket, the thought of going back to what you were before will be distressing beyond belief. You only have to read these threads to know that most posters HAVE made significant changes and are eating sensibly, but they're going to be losing their crutch. Of course they are worried!

That sums up my feelings exactly. For the first time in adulthood I’m now overweight as opposed to very overweight. I feel so much lighter, my joints less painful, I can walk more. I have a degenerative genetic condition that affects my metabolic system amongst many other things. I can eat very little but still gain weight and don’t seem to have a ‘full’ signal. My autonomic system is failing and that causes all sorts of issues with wild blood pressure fluctuations, temperature regulation, digestion etc. I started ozempic in April and have lost 17 lbs. I need to lose the same again . I’m so worried about trying to keep the weight off and failing. I’ve just finished my first 1mg pen and am now being sent a 0.5 one. I really hope it carries on reducing my appetite. I was doing so well . The only unwanted effect I have is severe constipation. No nausea, burping etc. I’ve been very lucky. I was planning to stay on it for a year as that was the maximum I could afford. But not sure supplies will last that long .

It should list it on the bottle. I use Aspall Raw Organic Cyder Vinegar with the mother and it's available everywhere, from Tesco and Sainsbury's to Holland & Barrett.

Fingers crossed it eases it! I feel great since I've started taking it.

supermarketscrunchie · 31/07/2023 09:56

Sugarplumfury That all sounds really tough. I really resonate with your post with the fear of not being able to keep it off. Ozempic has changed my life. My daughter takes it too and it has effectively controlled her eating disorder and she has never been happier.

I feel healthy, I move easier, I can hop out of the bath!, I have no fear of airplane belts, I have no fear of lifejackets, I am no longer permanently ashamed, my joint pain has gone, my stress incontinence has gone, I use my inhaler less, I am debating coming off/reducing antidepressants, I sleep better, I snore less, I have hugely decreased my risk of T2 diabetes, clothes shopping is a joy and my overall sense of sense and wellbeing has increased by 100%.

All because of Ozempic, so yes, deciding to come off it gives me huge fear. I live in hope that new drugs will be available in the near future though now that this has been discovered.

Ideally I'd like to stay on it at a low dose forever in the same way I take other essential meds for my health. I use Senna for the constipation btw which helps as this too has been an issue for me.

Got organic Mother apple cider vinegar in Sainsburys (£6 with nectar card). Drank a tablespoon in cold water through a straw before my chicken and beetroot and sweetcorn lunch. Will report how it goes 😊

I hope it does the trick of supporting you as you come off Ozempic. Have you looked up the rest of the Glucose Goddess hacks? Eating sequentially – greens/veg first, protein next, carbs/sugar last is also recommended. Her book, Glucose Revolution, explains it all.

supermarketscrunchie · 31/07/2023 15:53

Inkpotlover yes I'm having a look into it, Maybe psychological but not felt hungry all afternoon

@Sugarplumfury that is amazing to read of all the positive effects of losing weight and being on ozempic. I too am very scared 0.5 doesn't do much for me. I'm scared of losing all the progress I've made. I felt my self esteem improving and I felt good. It's gutting the whole situation, very hard mentally x

Sugarplumfury · 01/08/2023 06:21

SarahC50. I feel the same about the 0.5. In fact I emailed juniper to say I hadn’t losing anything for2 weeks and they said well I’d be moving up to 1mg next and that’s when a lot of people began to lose more. Which has indeed been the case. I hope the progress doesn’t just stall again. Let’s hope we are both wrong about .5

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 01/08/2023 07:49

I am very interested to see what will happen on this thread. I think I will be joining you in around 8-10 weeks time depending if I space out my remaining doses. Good luck everyone and well done on your losses so far.

Such a shame this can’t just be a supportive thread for people in the same situation as each other. We have been through the debates about the morality of this before and now people are stopping they get a hard time again.

I am very worried too that I will gain when I stop Ozempic. I know good ways of eating but can only stick to them for so long and Ozempic has helped so much.

The good news is that there are other similar drugs coming and Novo Nordisk are upping production so if all goes wrong there will be options in the not too distant future (even if it is mid 2024). I am also quite interested in how I will feel off the drug - I have seen reports of people having much more energy which would be good 🙂.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 01/08/2023 08:21

I'm feeling quite frustrated. I should be going up to 1.0 now (although had been thinking of doing 0.75 to minimise side effects) but decided to eek out my 1.0 pen and stay on 0.5.

Except 0.5 doesn't seem to be doing the trick any more.

The past few days I've had food noise and a constant knawing stomach back. I'm resisting for the time being but I'm so conscious of it. Sigh.

Menora · 01/08/2023 12:40

I have only ever had 0.5mg I was not able to get any 1mg to move up. Weight loss completely slowed but I haven’t gained on it
