Anyone improving their health following the Glucose Goddess hacks?

I'm putting this in Weight Loss Chat for traffic, because it's not about losing weight. I'm currently reading the GG book and finding it really interesting, because I've recently had blood tests show I might be insulin resistance and pre-pre-diabetic. My symptoms are many, but the worst are chronic energy slumps and needing daytime naps to recalibrate. Suddenly I'm very aware that my health is on its way to be compromised, if it's not already, so I'm looking at ways to improve it, and was wondering if anyone else has followed the GG hacks and felt better for it?

Ooh - it's just occurred to me that eating fresh pickles before/with the meal like lots of other cultures do would probably give you your tablespoon per day?

Yes - I've snipped the bit from the GG book where it is mentioned (on the page for cucumber and fennel pickles)!

I know @Inkpotlover - I keep forgetting anyway. Maybe I'll just do it when I remember...I'll try and do my own experiment whilst I have the CGM on and see how to respond to it. If it's well then maybe I'll starting remembering!

Almonds before meals have been shown to reduce blood glucose peaks. I tested them with my cgm and they were more effective than acv!

I also made some cookies using ground almonds and when I ate one my blood glucose actually went down.

I have around 8 before a meal.

This is brilliant to know, thank you! I love almonds and am having almond butter anyway with my savoury breakfast - will try having a teaspoon before I eat other meals.

That's a good one too - I love pickled gherkins!

Thanks @Breithaupt and @WinterDeWinter, both these might help me get round not having ACV.

@Bubbles254 that's fascinating - I am quite recently vegan and really need as much protein as I can get and love almonds so this is good news for me! x

You can do funky comparison graphs in the app too. So same breakfast, first one I ran 10km before eating it, second is eating it soon after getting up with no exercise. Nowadays I only add oats if I have exercised

All the graphs are in American blood sugar units but it is easy enough to work out

Impressive graphs @PosiePerkinPootleFlump !
I loved looking at Jessie's graphs on her IG too!

I'm struggling to upload mine to the app at the moment. Gets to 95% and then stops. Left it for quite a long time the first time and now trying again but same result.

This app, if I can get it to work, has definitely increased my interest again. The graphs straight off the libre app are a bit dull.

Do we think the Stevia in this is ok at the beginning of the meal? I would love it to be as I'm really struggling with the taste rn..

1 TABLESPOON of Stevia???!!!!!!!

I cannot imagine this being good for you...

Dr Mark Hyman - and others like Dr Becky Gillaspy - advocate not using ANY sugar substitutes as they all raise insulin levels.

Tulpenkavalier · 09/08/2023 15:56

I've heard that Sauerkraut and kimchi are useful 'appetizers' that curb appetite

Ledochas · 09/08/2023 16:42

That's great info on the almonds.

@PosiePerkinPootleFlump could I ask what cgm you bought? Would really like to get one to understand my spikes. Almost signed up to Zoe but didn't in the end. Would just like the data!

I got a freestyle libre. I wouldn't advocate getting one without reading the book but it's a really useful tool in conjunction with some background knowledge

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 09/08/2023 18:27

It only lasts 2 weeks but 2 weeks is enough to give you a decent idea

Ledochas · 09/08/2023 18:34

Thanks a lot! @PosiePerkinPootleFlump
Have read the GG book

Hi, I did try this recipe out and used 5-6 drops of Stevia. It made it so much more palatable and you only had a slight tang of the vinegar. However, I did some more reading and discovered ACV is not good for the gullet, as mentioned, and I have GERD and previous surgery on my stomach so haven't had any since. I did read about the fat burning properties of green and black tea though. Tried them, they were OK but made me feel so hungry all day! lol Goes to show it works???!

DarthSaver · 09/08/2023 21:27

Hi all,
Just wrote out a reply and lost it! So this is a shorter version...

Good luck everyone. I know GG said a little Stevia is ok to take the sharpness of the vinegar but I've not tried it myself.

Love the info about almonds- I actually like those! I didn't enjoy my vinegar cinnamon tea today. I love cinnamon but I don't really like vinegar. I'm going to stick it out for a week to give it a fair chance but I can't see me keeping it up long term. I might try lemon juice, which I do like!

I've got some cauliflower so I can try pickling it. Although I'm not huge on pickles either because they're vinegary 😅

Breakfast is going fine, I had more shakshuka.

There does seem to be a lot of personal variation with what causes spikes, which I guess is why the monitor is useful!

DarthSaver · 10/08/2023 08:15

Going to buy some mint and lemon and try vinegar with that... I've also made the yoghurt/Harrissa dressing that's in the GG book- wish me luck!

Tofu/avocado/mushrooms/tomatoes roasted in marmite and butter for breakfast this morning was delicious!

I don't know the Glucose Goddess, but I highly recommend The Sugar Solution, by Dr Mark Hyman, and it's follow-on The 10-Day Sugar Detox Diet, which includes a lot of sugar-free recipes. [Redacted by MNHQ]

As you can probably guess, I do not agree that we can "eat any type of sugar you like - they're all the same". Yes, they are all the same in terms of their effects, but cutting out or severely reducing all forms of sugar is the key to a healthy diet. Basically, sugar should be an occasional treat, i.e. an icecream or a cookie or a piece of chocolate 2-3 times a week, in moderation.

Since I dropped most sugar from my diet and instead eat mostly vegetables and protein, plus some healthy fats and complex carbs, I feel much more satisfied and rarely get any sweet cravings. Life-changing!

Internet Archive actually being sued by some publishers.

Ask your library to get the title in for you!

100% this! I'm really shocked someone would suggest that on this thread. One of my best friends is an author and her earnings are being massively affected by book piracy. It is an illegal download and breaches Dr Hayman's copyright.

I'm going to ask MN to take it down.

Thanks for pointing it out, @Abra1t, I hadn't noticed it before now.

Following this thread as started using the GG hacks last week. Eating veg first has been a game changer for me. I'm consciously looking for a veg based food if I'm out and about (not that easy in the summer hols with kids).
Tried the vinegar one day and was just a bit like a flat cider. Might have added a bit too much... will try to tweak it.

Not sure if mentioned yet but there's a good episode with Jessie on Dr Chatterjee's podcast.

Welcome to the thread! I agree that veg first is a game changer. I was cooking dinner the other night and planned to have some green salad first, but was feeling rushed so I just ate some rocket straight out of the bag like I was eating crisps! 😂Not only do I feel healthier eating more greens but I'm eating smaller portions of my meals as a result, because it fills me up. I'm starting to think it might be the best hack of all!

@Inkpotlover Yes I grabbed a pack of pea shoots and ate them like crisps while waiting for dinner the other night.

I'm finding that I'm not hungry at all unlike on other "diets" I've tried where I have had such strong cravings that I feel physically drawn to food like an addiction.

I've lost almost a stone and I don't feel like I've had to try that hard. I'm doing this more for health reasons though as I am prediabetic.

You're not hungry unlike on other diets because it isn't one! It's a physiological reset and by learning to balance your blood sugar your body is now working as it should. That's what so brilliant about it.

I'm not doing this to lose weight but to boost my energy and eradicate the need for afternoon nana naps! I haven't had one in two weeks, which is amazing. I'm also sleeping longer and deeper (presumably because I'm not ruining my sleep by napping too much) and I'm becoming more productive again work-wise.

Struggling with the GG app! Just can’t upload a graph to it. Tried several times now.

On phone at mo - will read and reply when on iPad/desktop later!
