Five stone in six months before.

violetsun · 08/07/2023 18:09

Four years ago 15 and half stone.
Started lighter life from 14.13 and got to 10 stone 2.
Couldn't do again!
Now almost 14 stone.
In my late fifties and feel/look bad/old.
Can't get that motivation and willpower to lose weight again. Lose a few pounds and put back on.
Clothes feel uncomfortable.
I feel breathless/old/ugly/out of control.
Dieting feels slow and overwhelming and like I am never going get there.
Just need help please. Feel depressed as skin white and I have bad leg veins so just feel gross especially in summer as want to wear shorts as even overweight people have legs with no marks but my leg's horrible. I hate my appearance and need to help myself but out of control and work clothes really uncomfortable.
Just can't get that willpower or switch to do it like I used to.

I have a similar story to you OP. I am trying desperately to find the motivation. I feel like it's starting to be there. I am trying to make small good decisions every day as the bigger picture is too much to deal with. I cannot deal with food in a logical way so meal replacement is the only successful way I have lost weight. I am going back on it. Then strict low carb.

Good luck with it.
Hope you achieve the results you want.
Will think of you and hope you succeed in achieving your goal.

Also, reach out to friends or colleagues with good habits. If you can go for a walk with Chris from Accounts on Tuesday lunchtimes, go swimming with Yvonne Friday evening, volunteer marshal at parkrun Sat morning, go out with the Ramblers Sunday, yoga class Monday etc etc then it will need a tenth of the motivation once your calendar is set up. Company and habit are your best pals there.

And the regular exercise will promote better sleep - virtuous circle.

Good idea.
Incorporate exercise into everyday activities so just natural.

Well, the first thing - even if it sounds hard - is to stop buying the things that are tempting you, that you know aren't helping you!

Ridiculously low calorie diets over a long period of time are not really the answer as - as you know - at the end of it you'll just end up going back to bad habits.

However. That said, the Fast800 plan is a good way of ensuring swift weight loss, over a 12 week period. I think results that quickly (with a well-controlled, nutritious diet plan) will be much more motivating for you.

Don't worry too much about exercise. Although it's very good for your overall health, it plays a much smaller part in weight loss - unless you're doing a huge amount of it, daily.

You are correct re exercise.

Even if you lost half a pound a week, that would be over two stone in a year and 1lb a week would be four stone.

Yeah when I think of the big picture it is too overbearing and I either don't do anything or get discouraged

Instead of thinking about what you want to lose in total, break it down into more manageable targets. So focus on 3lbs at a time. Then it won't seem so overwhelming.

homeitisthen · 08/07/2023 21:17

No you don't have to pay for the apps
But you can upgrade in MyNetDiary pay for a year but I've never bothered
I use that app to log most things and scan but if I can't find what I'm looking for them I use the other app you mentioned
I'm not sure how to reply to your comment so has to put it here

Dieting feels slow and overwhelming and like I am never going get there

The thing is, if you start now, this time next year you will be there.
If you don’t bother starting at all, this time next year you will be where you are now.
Slow and steady wins the race.

Take control and use a calorie counting app for a few days to monitor where you are over eating & go from there. You can do it!

Yes that's how I need to think

Thankyou I need to as I work in a very busy environment and felt so uncomfortable last week and could see the rolls through my clothes and when I put some jeans on yesterday they were so tight. I dont want to buy too many bigger clothes as won't have motivation.
Also about a month ago I threw away six bags of beautiful mainly smaller clothes as it was depressing me not fitting into any of it. Regret that now but they gone so just got to think only clothes.
Anyway Thankyou for support.

I am going to start a new thread under same username with my start weight tomorrow and if any one else wishes to join that thread it would be good motivation and accountability for me.
I am also interested in other peoples weight journey and tips and advice.
My new thread will have my weekly weight on a Monday so you can see if I am changing my habits.
This needs to be a lifestyle change not diet as such.
If anyone interested in joining me be good.
I wish to lose approximately four stone by this time next year so slow and steady.
It will be great if more comes off quicker but I will be satisfied with a pound a week.

Also curious to get others perspective about this as very self conscious and insecure and my oh very fit/sporty.
I feel awful and concerned whether they would like my appearance still.
Be honest and say whether your partner gaining weight changes the way you view them as in you may not be as attracted?

My other half often criticises me for my weight gain he says like when I met you was a size 12 and fit now I'm 52 size 18-20 and weigh 14.2 stone
Can be hurtful at times

I've been using a app called
MyNetDiary
It's free its calorie counting I used to be 15.5 and I felt the same as you
I now weigh 14.2
My legs are horrible I would love to wear shorts but I opt for long dresses
The app is very good worth a look
It asks for your height weight and age and works out what you need to eat
You enter meals and if you did a little work
You can do this start say Monday and by next summer you be a new super you xx

Your reply later re negative comments from your partner makes me cross as they shouldn't say those things to you but lose weight for yourself.
Don't ask for their opinion or reassurance just do it for your health and wellbeing.
There are always people who say negative things whether we are big or small. I remember years ago when I lost lots of weight some people were saying 'are you sure you are not anorexic'
Just take each day as it comes and we can all support each other on our weight loss journey on here.

No magic bullet I’m afraid, but you have managed this before and you can manage it again. First throw all the naughty stuff out of the house and you’ll be much less tempted. Otherwise it might as well have a big sign on it saying eat me! I’ve been there 🤣 do it now rather than thinking you’ll just not buy more once you’ve eaten it.🤪

I do get a sense of despair, lack of motivation, and sadness(?) in you, and wonder what else is going on in your life. Counselling might be worth exploring further. Losing weight is hard, and particularly if you having other cr@p going on in your life.

I used to weigh considerably more than you. I Lost 5.5 st in 6 months using the 5:2 diet and have kept it off for 5 years. I can remember, a couple of months in, feeling hip bones when I lay in bed at night, and the jelly belly didn’t flop over as much when I turned over in bed and at that point I started seeing day be day changes. I developed the mentality of today we diet, tomorrow we don’t. It became an intermittent diet rather than a continuous drag. I leaned to think of calories consumed over a week not a day. A weekend blowout is fine if you have cut back a bit through the week. A single piece of cake once a week, will not kill you or your diet. I also learned to listen to my body and eat when hungry. That didn’t happen over night but I think is why I’ve managed to keep the weight off.

I used the 5:2 diet, which I found excellent but I did have real good moral (he dieted alongside me) support from DH. It’s worth spending 2 hours reading the book, and deciding if you want to give it a go. My top tips would be:

don’t do 2 days back to back, at least to start with
plan carefully. If you snack in the evening, plan to do just that. Apple, cheese, few nuts. But watch the portion sizes.
don’t try the recipes in the book, they’re rubbish. Go to the garden centre and get a couple of Hamlyn “light” recipes books and use those.
plan what you are eating and buy only that
do get on the scales every day. 🫣Scary but necessary! Once I started losing weight it became much easier. And I continue to step on them every day now and cut back if I see more than a couple of lbs go on
have some emergency rations on hand for if you feel really hungry. Low cal cup a soup, hot choc, apple, carrots. Even better though is to go for a walk, run up the stairs a few time. Exercise seems to reduce hunger, at least in me!

The first month was hard, but I then got into it and it became (relatively) easy.

my Apols for the zeal with which I describe this diet, and it isn’t for everyone. However, it’s been life changing for me. Can walk for miles, not out of breath, do yoga without bits flopping around. And I do like being asked if I have lost “more weight” which I haven’t but it’s nice to hear!

I’ve tried WW and slimming world with some success but put it all back on. Now I realise that the chats after weigh in are all about food. I came away feeling hungry and wanting to try all the low cal versions of normal foods. Unfortunately eating lots of low cal food is no different to eating smaller amounts of proper food. There was a constant focus on having to diet ALL the time 🥺 so I stopped going to them, although I guess the weigh in can be helpful. I’ve done lighter life too. 🤢 not nice, although that would sort out planning for your low cal days!

good luck and remember you have done this once and you can do it again. I know there’s a cost of living crisis …… new wardrobe perhaps?🤫

Thankyou for your tips and advice based on your experience.
It is really motivating and inspiring to read and gives me hope that I can do this.
I appreciate you taking the time to write it down for me.
I am going to count calories so going weigh myself in morning and then work out from there daily calorie allowance based on my other stats.
I would love to be 9 stone but going to put my target at 10 stone as more achievable for me. I can review things if I reach ten stone.
Will keep updating on here so if you get time again in future any tips, words of encouragement etc will be greatly appreciated.

I found it easier to think, I’ll just lose 1/2 stone, then the next 1/2 stone. Success comes more quicker (and more often!)
