*No-weigh* waist slimming challenge - 1 or 2" - who's up for it?

For context, I've already slimmed down considerably over the past year but I think I look better at a size 10 than a 12. Plus there's a strong history of type 2 diabetes in the family so I would be more in the "safe zone" if I lose some more abdominal weight, which is my big problem area, so there's a health motivation, too. I'm like a big potato with skinny limbs atm, not safe for diabetes at all.

For my weight loss so far, I haven't weighed myself at all and I have no idea what I weigh which is actually really bizarre, but it has helped keep my mind focused on the fat on my body and how it feels rather than the number on the scales. I just know I'm a size 12 now. I don't plan on weighing myself because it has been a destructive force in the past for me.

Now I'd like to focus on the abdominal weight and lose one or two inches, which actually could mean quite a lot of weight.

Sorry to be bossy/dictatorial but I don't want people's weights in the thread, I want a different approach based on abdominal/waist weight and reduction in waist size.

Is anyone else up for this challenge? Does anyone else want to join in measuring our waists and focusing on that as we come up to summer?

If there's anyone out there do you have any ideas for a goal? Maybe one inch would be more achievable or is it not enough? And I'm thinking cm might be better for accurate measurements 🤔

My waist is large despite losing weight.
How do you plan to trim yours? I had my middle most of all so this sounds like a good thing to do.

waistchallenge · 14/05/2023 10:48

I'm not sure, @AutisticLegoLover , I think I'll just have to lose weight all over. I just want to focus on how it's coming off the waist/abdominal area rather than a number on the scales. There's some research showing that positive health outcomes correlate to waist size, too.

Shameless bump! Supporting information:

Why your waist size matters?

Measuring your waist can help reduce your risk of heart and circulatory diseases, as Professor Naveed Sattar tells Senior Cardiac Nurse Emily McGrath.

Why does your waist measurement matter?

Waist circumference is a good measure of fat around your middle. This type of fat builds up around your organs, and is linked to high blood fat levels, high blood pressure and diabetes. A larger waist usually also means there is excess fat inside your organs. When this happens in your liver, for example, it pumps out too much fat and sugar into the blood, increasing your risk of coronary heart disease and diabetes.

BHF research is shedding more light on how fats in your blood could affect your health. Our animation explains Dr Alan Stewart's research.

Good morning! my waist is 79cm and I'm a size 12.
Always was a size 10 with flat stomach and now am 50 with a belly.

This is exactly what I need, thank you.

MoreEqualPig · 15/05/2023 07:57

This sounds like a good idea. I am already prediabetic and am an apple shape. I will measure my waist when I get a chance.

waistchallenge · 15/05/2023 13:36

Oh great, some other people have joined! 🤗

How often should we measure?

And how long's it going to run for? How about ten weeks which would be around the end of July? Or is that too long?

I can't find my tape measure! 😩

Buntyforgirls · 15/05/2023 14:26

This is definitely my problem area too.. Don't necessarily look over weight but have a menopausal round tummy which means my clothes are getting tighter, and I feel awful!
Also, the health implications re visceral fat.
Currently 78cm waist.
Curves here we come!

Thismountain · 15/05/2023 19:17

10 weeks sounds good. Curvy is what I want too. Been reading how low sugar and high protein can help here.

waistchallenge · 15/05/2023 19:25

Ten weeks measuring Mondays and Thursdays? Or more/less times per week?

What's everyone doing to lose the weight?

I've just started back on 5 2. I need to take back some control and self discipline.
Low carb has always been successful in the past, but the carbs crept back, and now I can't give them up! I also IF.
This way I can still eat HEALTHILY, and a little bit of anything as long as I am mindful. That's the plan! Always easier at the beginning...

waistchallenge · 16/05/2023 07:02

@Thismountain That looks great! I had a skim read and need to sit and read it thoroughly, but it seems to touch on all the key issues.

Still no tape measure! I find it really frustrating to be the one who was late considering I started the thread. I tried to buy a tape measure at the supermarket last night but they only had full sewing kits and I don't need more clutter!

I saw this post last night so measured my waist last night. Feeling a bit shell shocked, I knew it was bad but it explains why none of my clothes fit.😪

thesockfairydidit · 16/05/2023 07:39

Will measure mine once I can find the measure. I’ve been doing high fibre 1300 calories only eating between 12 and 6. I’m mid 40s sound similar to you OP thinner arms and legs and a too round middle, think I’m peak peri too just for added joy.

UpUpUpU · 16/05/2023 07:42

Can I join please?

I carry all my weight around my middle and it looks and feels awful. Non on my clothes fit and I always feel like I am being cut in half. I envy women with curvy figures, my curves go the wrong way!

My waist this morning is 87cm!

waistchallenge · 16/05/2023 08:05

Welcome new joiners and anyone who's thinking of joining! It's a different approach so let's see if it works! 😃

@RunningKatie Aww, it can't be that bad, surely?

83 cm

I’m peri too and I’ve gained so much weight

waistchallenge · 17/05/2023 08:34

Day 3 update: so far we have these measurements for the first "measure-in":

Thismountain 79cm
Buntyforgirls 78cm
UpUpUpU 87cm
thesockfairydidit 83cm

@waistchallenge [!], @AutisticLegoLover, @MoreEqualPig and@RunningKatie still to add our numbers (if wanting to take part, of course).

I'm really flagging, an injury means I'm suddenly not doing my daily exercise and so if anything I'm sure I've gained this week. I can immediately feel the impact of not exercising which is bizarre but true! Trust me to start a weight loss thread and then start piling on the kgs! 😕

Oh dear @waistchallenge . Hope you recover quickly! Measurements again tomorrow 😊

AutisticLegoLover · 17/05/2023 14:11

@waistchallenge have you found your tape measure yet?

waistchallenge · 17/05/2023 14:50

No, it's so frustrating as I only just bought one a couple of weeks ago 😑 All I can do is buy a new one, I'm headed to Sainsbury's later so fingers crossed they'll have one.

OP posts:
CountryGirl56 · 17/05/2023 16:23

Can you add me on please. I am 112 cm at belly button, 97 cm at narrowest part. Legs not fat and small boned, I am all tummy and in the high risk category according to the British Heart Foundation link posted up thread. @RunningKatie hoping my large waist measurement cheers you up.
