Ihaterain1 · 07/05/2023 19:09

I have been eating toomuch chocolate and sweets since the new year which resulted in putting on around 8 pounds. I am planning to reset my cravings by giving up sugar from tomorrow for at least 21 days. Anyone wants to join me?

Good for you! I think I could do with a sugar fast myself! Have you prepared yourself with healthy alternatives to eat instead over the next 3 weeks? 😊

I think sausages have sugar too. Have you read bright lines eating? The author says sugar is just as addictive as heroin.

Lovelydovey · 07/05/2023 19:51

I'll join you - I am a complete sugar addict,,,,,

GCWorkNightmare · 07/05/2023 19:52

Why just 21 days? I gave it up (save a very few special occasions) 2.5 YEARS ago.

It’s more addictive than heroin.

If you’re going to give it up then you need to check absolutely everything. There are over 50 names for it.

I gave up sugar at the start of January and I’m not sure I’ll ever go back to eating it like I did before, I feel SO much better, no cravings, far more energy (even with 4 kids, one of whom is newborn!). I’m very strict with things that are “obviously” sugar like cake, chocolate, ice cream, biscuits and so on. I’m slightly less strict with things that are less obviously sugar like sausages/ketchup etc but I still don’t eat very much of those things. In terms of weight loss I’ve almost lost a stone but I only really lost significant weight when I combined no sugar with low carb. Hope that helps!

was it difficult at first? I really want to give up sugar. Do you have any tip please? Thanks x

RatatouilleAndFeta · 07/05/2023 20:13

Yes! Meeeee 🙌

Starcircle · 07/05/2023 20:14

@GoldenFarfalle - you might feel a bit rubbish for a couple of days depending on how much sugar you were consuming. After that it’s generally SO easy because you just always say no so doesn’t use up much willpower. I struggled a bit on Easter Sunday not to have chocolate so I think next year ill allow some on that day. My goal is to get to my birthday in December then have some chocolate brownies to celebrate then get straight back on it. Im
sure some people would say it’s restrictive but I find it very freeing.

I paid attention to what I expected from the sugary item and what I actually got: wanted energy but the resulting sugar crash wasn’t worth it. When you realise it makes you feel like shit it’s easy to give it up.

GCWorkNightmare · 07/05/2023 20:20

I feel so much more alive without it.

I also gave up caffeine, rice, pasta, flour, potatoes, anything with sweeteners, most dairy. Already gave up meat about 30 years ago.

Doseydots · 07/05/2023 20:23

I would like to join too please, my sugar cravings are outrageous. I know if I initially give myself a goal of 21 days, it doesn’t feel as daunting. I will use this thread for accountability.

Anybody have any tips or advice?

UpUpUpU · 07/05/2023 20:26

Can I join please? Given it up before and felt amazing!
I eat so much sugar it’s obscene

I think I'm addicted to all these things. I'll start by giving up sugar.

Depending on the fruit that may keep the sugar
monster active.

GCWorkNightmare · 07/05/2023 20:32

Almond butter is better than peanut butter.

GoldenFarfalle · 07/05/2023 20:33

Anyone has a list of the sugar names? I was checking the ingredients from s ham package and I don't understand half of the names..

21 days to reset to my old eating habits, i gave up sugar a few years ago,i followed Sara Wilsons plan. After that i was eating eat a bit but this year after a lot of stress, being tired, perimenopause plus covid 4 times i started to eat sweet things every days, i am hoping that after 21 days i will go back to my old eating habits. Its apparently 21 days to create a habit( although i hope i will last much longer)

Me please! I need the accountability.

Will start tomorrow

lochmaree · 07/05/2023 21:09

when you give up sugar, do you give up things like dates?

if not, a nice recipe for brownies is

115g walnuts
235g dates
110g peanut or almond butter
50g cocoa powder

Process walnuts and dates into fine mixture, then add butter and cocoa and process again. Roll into balls or press into a tray and refrigerate.

QueenAstrid · 07/05/2023 21:16

I’ll also join tomorrow, I’m a complete addict. Where do we stand with fruit? I eat a lot of apples and it feels wrong to give those up too.
