Giving up sugar for 21 days

Ihaterain1 · 07/05/2023 19:09

I have been eating toomuch chocolate and sweets since the new year which resulted in putting on around 8 pounds. I am planning to reset my cravings by giving up sugar from tomorrow for at least 21 days. Anyone wants to join me?

Are you giving up all sugar OP including natural sugar and sugars in things like milk? What about carbs (as they are basically sugar as well aren't they?)

I have stopped eating sugar at breakfast, I think I'd struggle to do the same in the rest of my day just because so many things contain sugar.

I'm interested to hear more about where you draw the line and what kinds of things you are eating?

I have milk in my coffee either normal or oat. I don't eat main carbs anyway(no pasta ,bread ,rice, potatoes, ceral) i have a bit of lentils, barley or quinoa in salads/ main meals. For me the only problem is the never ending snacking on chocolate or biscuits here and there . Also reducing sugar free drinks as i crave something sweet after this. I am hoping after 21 days the cravings will go and i will allow myself dark chocolate if i fancy but not the whole bar like i have been doing recently. When i did Sarah Wilson program about 10 years ago i avoided foods that contained 5g of sugar per 100 grams so i will mainly try to stick to this rule.

Really good idea for a thread - I am joining! Thank you.

I try most of the time to go sugar and carb free, as have been prediabetic for past 3 years. But yep - it's not always easy for me.

I’m purely cutting out the extra refined sugar I eat (which is tons) but not worrying about carbs or natural sugars. I am already food restricted due to allergies so don’t want to make life hard and boring. I’d be happy to not eat half a kilo of chocolate or a big share sized bag of crisps in one sitting 😬

1st day. YAY!
Breakfast: 2 Ryvita slices 0.3gr sugar per each slice.
smoked salmon
1/4 avocado.
1 tatsuma

Is this good or it is too much sugar from the Ryvita? Thank you.

GCWorkNightmare · 09/05/2023 09:32

The carbs (also sugars) in the ryvita will be through the roof. And a satsuma is high in sugar too. Good protein and fats in the salmon and avocado though.

I have actually stopped eating breakfast the last few days. I drink a cup of tea (with soya milk) instead and find that I do not eat more despite skipping breakfast (read about this in Spoon Fed by Tom Spector). I have a healthy snack or my breakfast at 10 or 11. either way, it's less overall calories as if I have breakfast later, it's instead of a snack.

I have been having salads for lunch, with lots of things in - cucumber, tomato, spinach, pepper, pear, broccoli, beetroot, baby sweetcorn, mange tout, walnuts/sunflower seeds, hummus, black rice, feta/halloumi/mozzarella.

Have given up squash.

Made some hazelnut chocolate spread the other day. Blend hazelnuts, water (or milk/cream) and cocoa powder. I also added a small amount of date syrup but not definitely necessary.

Dr Becky has lots of videos about cutting out sugar and reducing carbs, intermittent fasting, and eating a keto type diet that includes plenty of healthy vegetables. Here is another one:

Day 2 a success. We had cake and scones at work and I didn’t touch any of them. This is a huge success for me. I am still having fruit and oats for breakfast. At the moment I am concentrating on not eating sweets, cakes and chocolate. I binge far too much in these. Once this is under control, I will think about going further. I also do 16:8, this helps me not to snack in an evening.

GoldenFarfalle · 09/05/2023 20:23

I ate a full bag of crisps, I was offered one by one of my children. I thought just one crisp and I ended up eating a full bag!
I feel really bad with myself. I'm the worst 😫

Well done and it's really good idea doing intermittent fasting

Doseydots · 09/05/2023 20:48

Please don’t feel bad, just start again. It's hard to do, we wouldn't be on her supporting each other if it was easy. Keep trying.

Ihaterain1 · 09/05/2023 20:51

Day 2 done, i was in 2 supermarkets today and didn't buy any chocolate, normally i get some 'for later' and eat most of it by the time i get home

can I jump in and join too? My sugar addiction is out of control and I need some motivation x

UpUpUpU · 09/05/2023 21:00

i have such a headache but did get to the gym today. Aim to do the same tomorrow but then I have two night shifts. I usually survive purely on sugar so need to think about this!

Could I join too please? I'm going to concentrate on chocolate, biscuits cakes etc first

Why just 21 days? I gave it up (save a very few special occasions) 2.5 YEARS ago.

Well, we’ll done to you but maybe let’s congratulate the OP for making a start on their journey, starting out with small goals, and a bit of support.. 🙄

Doseydots · 10/05/2023 05:57

Good luck to everyone trying today. The videos in this thread are good. Especially the 10 ways to avoid eating sugar.

My plan for today is to avoid sugary snacks which means keeping away from the biscuits at work and not buying cake from the canteen. I will be doing 16:8 too, small changes is the best way forward for me. The small steps then naturally become bigger changes.

Two days of no chocolate, biscuits, cake or sweets here. If I can crack the addiction of these then I will be happy 🤞🏻
