Just wondering if anyone signed up to the Zoe app and lost weight? I’ve seen differing views and just really want to know that I will actually lose some weight..I’d like to be healthier n all, but I’d also like to be slimmer…

Hi, I'm nearly at the end of the four month period and have lost no weight. I was already eating a fairly ok diet before, although it has been quite eye opening learning the night/lower scoring foods so I have made tweaks for that. I think it depends on the reason you're not as slim as you like - I'm a saint Monday-Thursday and then eat and drink too much Fri-Sun and I haven't changed my weekend ways enough to see a difference in weight. Worth it in other ways though I think and I'm sure if I reigned in weekends it would have had bigger impact

AngelinaJolie21 · 28/02/2023 21:48

yeah that’s interesting thanks for that. So far i lost a couple of pounds but it’s not really the huge miracle i thought it would be. I feel WAY better, loads more energy etc, but was hoping to be slimmer too! One of the problems is I end up eating a lot of nuts and cheese, and a lot of pulses so might try and change that to fish and see if it makes a difference….do you feel better on it?

I am doing it. In some ways I’m the perfect candidate - bit overweight but not near obese, I eat a bit too well and like the finer things in life.. But the report was a wake up call - worse than expected blood sugar and fat responses though decent gut biome diversity.
Im doing it for health reasons as I want to live in good health for as long as possible.

I do feel better and definitely more confident that I'm generally making good food choices for me which adds a bit of feeling virtuous! 😂 I think the nuts/cheese thing is definitely a trap - if you find out they're green foods it's like a green light to eat loads but in reality that won't help weight loss. Unfortunately portion size is still a thing.

If I had done it a few years ago I think it would have been much more impactful as since then I'd already basically given up carbs - my blood sugar score was SO bad but my ex-pasta habit would have made it even worse!

I'm still glad I did it though. Hoping that the weight loss comes slow and steady - I'm quietly making better choices but nothing dramatic, so over months it should surely add up?!!!

PhillyJoe · 01/03/2023 07:19

This has intrigued me. I love information so the test kit massively appeals to me. Did you all find it helpful to get your personalised results in terms of motivation to make better choices? I have had periods where I reduce my carb intake and I know that tends to help my energy levels but I do struggle to stick with it.

AngelinaJolie21 · 01/03/2023 09:44

Yes, I think slow and steady is better isn’t it. They say it’s about settling at a weight that’s right for you which sounds appealing rather than yo yo up and down. I was really surprised to learn that both my fat and sugar responses were good (in a way I want to re-test cos I don’t believe it!), so it has given the green light to carbs AND nuts and cheese and so I’ve realised, having not seen the scales budge, I kind of have to be a grown-up about it and self-regulate a little, rather than load up thinking I’m going to end up slim by magic. But yes, it’s SO interesting and weirdly a lot of the foods I need to avoid - pork chops? - I never eat anyway which kind of makes you think you know somewhere instinctively what’s good for you…

AngelinaJolie21 · 01/03/2023 09:49

And yes PhillyJoe, the info really helps. I’ve never managed to stick at anything but seeing in black and white what works and doesn’t is massively empowering to stick to something, and I’ve ended up feeling so much better and healthier as a result

@AngelinaJolie21 thanks so much for the feedback. I suspect it will help me as well. My mum died last year of kidney failure directly related to the effects of her poor diet/health and while I know I’m healthier and more active than she was, I also know I am somewhat in denial about how unhealthy I currently am so I think I could do with the reality check.

AngelinaJolie21 · 01/03/2023 11:27

Yes, two very sick parents with rubbish diets was what set me off on it….and I definitely feel healthier even just after a few weeks…

I'm just jumping in as I have just scoffed my way through my 3 breakfast muffins. I can't say that I am excited about eating 2 more for lunch. I wish I'd signed up DH too.

I am hoping to drop a few KG, but am more interested in what triggers blood sugar spikes etc. I think I am going to get obsessed by the blood sugar monitor for the next fortnight. I'd like the monitor to tell me that my typical lunch of a cheese toastie is splendid! I have a hunch that I am
not great at digesting fat.

I did the intermittent fasting project for just over 3 months, and that seemed to work well for me, but doing this meant that I seem to have cut back on fruit and veg (typically scoffing carbs for lunch instead of salad/miso noodles).

LulooLemon · 16/03/2023 09:46

Pleased to find this thread! I'm still waiting for my results, due any day now.

Thistle72 · 20/03/2023 15:33

I’ve read loads about it, it’s really interesting how you have all found it. Following with interest

Madcats · 20/03/2023 17:22

I'm just starting on week 2.

My stomach really didn't enjoy breakfast of rice and/or cheese for 5 days! I'm beginning to wonder whether I was fighting a bug (there seems to be a lot of norovirus around).

I must admit that we do tend to eat wholewheat bread/pasta/brown rice as DD is sporty. I'm on the food challenges, so I'm not surprised that my homemade chilli was better for me with brown rice.

I was surprised how (frozen) cherries and yoghurt were much better than a shop bought cherry yoghurt.

I'm starting the chocolate challenge for breakfast tomorrow and the humus vs chickpeas for lunch.

I'm going to miss my blood-sugar sensor!

lljkk · 20/03/2023 17:48

How does Zoe company say you will end up losing weight? What is the mechanism? Like, could they say "If you never drink milk then you will lose weight!" or "As long as you have 5 brazil nuts a day then you'll never overeat anything at all." Else... how. How does Zoe info make people lose weight.

How does their advice vary between customers? Do they actually give out very different dietary advice to individuals?

lljkk · 20/03/2023 17:54
this lady is giving her experience. I'm curious, how many people who try Zoe ever get a list of gut supporters ("eat this!") & gut oppressors ("don't eat this!") that don't look exactly like her same lists. How much do they lists really vary? Why can't you end up overeating on the "eat this!" foods.

If lljkk can hang on for another 4 weeks I ought to have my report by then.

When I signed up I said that I wanted to improve heart health etc, not especially bothered about losing weight, but I'll happily share some of my "try " and "avoid".

I'm not sure that I've had corned beef in a couple of decades, so I am not sure what the family will make of that!

lljkk · 20/03/2023 21:48

I'm totally curious, Madcats, please do post what you get.

LulooLemon · 20/03/2023 22:10

I think it makes sense that certain foods will be 'bad' for everyone - we have not evolved to munch our way though Jammy Dodgers and Pot Noodles. So to some extent, there will be similarities in gut suppressors.

Bearpawk · 01/04/2023 17:33

Hi everyone, my kit has just arrived and working out my start date around Easter etc.
can anyone let me know the couple of weeks of wearing the cgm after the muffins day - are you told specifically what to eat ? Or can you go about your normal business eating what you want and it records that

Madcats · 01/04/2023 18:42

I am a couple of weeks ahead of you, @Bearpawk . I'm not planning to eat another muffin for a long while!

I am just about to start week 4.

After the fasting before and after the muffins, you can eat what you like BUT it really really is worth logging what you are eating at about the right time.

During the two weeks that the sensor works (and it does seem pretty strict about switching off), there are some food challenges that Zoe lets you choose.

I chose iterations of rice and cheese for breakfast (luckily I wasn't in an office as I farted for England with that), fruit and yoghurt vs shop fruity yoghurt, and humus vs chickpeas and veg sticks.

I could have done with better instructions for the post-muffin day, TBH. I launched into food swaps a couple of days early (but apparently it didn't matter).

I am sad that my biggest sugar spike was after scoffing a small pizza for lunch.

I've another couple of weeks to go before I get my gut and "how I cope with fat" analysis.

I'd love to get the rest of the family 'tested', but I have a hunch we are all very different.

Leftoverssandwich · 03/04/2023 08:45

I’m doing it along with a friend and we had pretty different test results and now different food scores - which has reassured me that it’s not all the same ‘good’ and ‘bad’ food.

For me, my scores were much better than I expected, and I have started eating more wholegrains. I’ve been eating high protein, low carb for years so it’s all taking a bit of getting used to, but so far I’m enjoying different foods. My gut suppressors, of the food I actually eat, are mostly meat, so it’s been a real turnaround.

I can see myself losing some weight slowly with this as I am eating a mostly vegetarian low fat high fibre diet now. But it would be a real challenge, and possibly not sustainable, if I didn’t enjoy the food I am recommended to eat.

I did have a Nando’s yesterday which scored fine, with spicy grains and rainbow slaw, including a burger in a bun.

lljkk · 03/04/2023 08:48

How was your friend's dietary advice different, Leftoverssandwich ?

Is your friend...
advised to not eat / eat less wholegrains?
advised to eat more meat / as much meat as she likes?
You didn't give more specifics so I can't ask about anything else.

Was your friend also coming from background of years of diet = high protein/low carb ? Did you ever wonder if you over-sensitised or imbalanced your gut due to your years-long diet habits?

Leftoverssandwich · 03/04/2023 08:56

Her scores are very different so she is finding it harder to find acceptably scoring carbs, whereas I can eat most whole grains in moderation and some freely. But she is recommended to eat homemade chips! I am not. Meat is less awful for her but not by much as her gut was better than mine. She naturally eats more like I should be on Zoe but is struggling to score highly enough whereas I’m finding that it’s fairly easy so long as I avoid the things that are very bad for me. Almost all fruit is fine for me but lots of it is Amber for her, for example. Neither of us eats a lot of highly processed food so that is harder to offer examples for.

Zoe recommends everyone eat at least 30 plants a week so that will inevitably be central to most people’s new diets, and I think nuts and seeds will be promoted across the board. I assume the gut improvers will be the same for everyone. The nuance must lie more in the fat and sugar responses.

Leftoverssandwich · 03/04/2023 08:57

And I don’t think my gut has been affected by my diet as it was mostly to avoid blood sugar spikes after having gest
