The Last Diet - anyone tried it?

Peae · 31/01/2023 19:37

I can't even remember why I bought this, I've read so many "not-a-diet", "no-more-dieting" books. But I'm surprised to say that I'm finding it really, really good. Has anyone else tried it?

(It's The Last Diet by Shahroo Izadi and I'm listening to it on Audible).

Following. I bought this book a couple of years ago. Timing was wrong. I think we were in a lockdown and I had zero commitment. I will find it tomorrow and start reading again.
You're doing very well Peae, have you had to make big changes in what you eat or restrict a lot?

Peae · 21/05/2023 21:10

No, but I think that’s because there’s guidance in the book about choosing your plan.
Where I am still —failing— tinkering is with weekends. I just seem to undo the progress I make in the week.

I would love to hear from others following the plan 😊

I am similar, do so well in the week and then go a bit mad at the weekend. I think it comes from a place of wanting to relax and reward myself. But can I not reward myself some other way?!

Peae · 25/05/2023 17:40

I'm the same. I use food as a way of marking the weekend and treat myself. I also use it to reward myself for staying committed and in control all week. Obviously this isn't great, but it's only through doing The Last Diet that it has come in to my awareness.

I'm not really sure what to do about it. As much as I want to be healthier I also want to overindulge at the weekend.

I'm really working on my emotional eating at the moment, and without sugar to turn to, I'm really having to sit with some difficult feelings :(

Tychonas · 29/05/2023 17:25

I still haven't read the book but will do so this week and update here.

Tychonas · 29/05/2023 17:27

I posted too soon! I was going to add that I just can't face having to massively restrict, I'm fine with slower weight loss and working on my relationship with food.

Peae · 30/05/2023 06:09

Mine is going well, I’m back down to my recent minimum. This is 3lb above a stone milestone. In the past,, every time I have got close to the next stone I seem to sabotage and go up again.
I am hoping to have learned and to be able to do something different.

Unfortunately I also have a loss of appetite due to work stress. This is also causing what feels like a constant surge of adrenaline ☹️ so I’m a bit worried about inflammation. (Most of my Last Diet Plan is around reducing inflammation!).

Ooh, reading back, I can see how much I’ve struggled with over-eating at a weekend and I think I’ve cracked that this weekend!

you can do this @Tychonas!

Had an extremely stressful and upsetting time at work this week, that kicked off not long as I wrote my last update. Completely lost my appetite over the bank holiday weekend and then over-ate at the back end of the week. My weight stayed the same as last week.

I'm afraid I've completely fallen off the wagon with sugar. At the end of the day I hate how sickly and gluttonous I feel. Promise myself I won't eat sugar at all tomorrow. Then I wake up wanting to eat ALL the sugar. I'm worried about the harm it is doing me, but in the midst of the cravings tomorrow I won't give it a second thought :(

OP posts:
Peae · 05/06/2023 17:51

(I did it! Not a bite of sugar today, and a colleague brought cake in).

Things are a bit up in the air. I'm on the road with DP for a week off, and despite our best intentions I'm finding it difficult to stick to my plan. I'm bloated with all of the travel and heat too. It's been a great few days, but I'm looking forward to getting back to the structure of normal life.

@Peae or anyone else who's read the book 😃
would it be compatible with fasting?

So far fasting is really the only thing that has ever worked for me so I wouldn't want to explore further if they contradict.
thanks

Peae · 11/06/2023 15:08

Hey, the book's approach is that you can use any methods that work for you.

(Fasting is a major part of my approach).

Thank you! Sounds like it's working well for you.
In the last couple of years I've dropped about 20kg fasting only to regain 10kg each time... I'm in the have regained again stage 🙄 & really looking for the missing piece of the puzzle (obviously the downward trajectory is good but it would be a damn sight faster if I could miss out the regain!!)

Peae · 11/06/2023 19:46

I think the book is very good for weeding out the process behind emotional eating, self sabotage etc.

It doesn’t make any claims on how best to lose weight; you choose the means that work best for you.

What’s your fasting regime? I am thinking about trying to make 18:6 work on a weekday, and going junk sugar-free.

OP posts:
GoatsareGOAT · 11/06/2023 20:57

I could really do with the self sabotage help!
Also I have a childhood bereavement & fall into food at that time of year EVERY year 🤦🏻‍♀️ doesn't seem to matter if I'm conscious of it or not.

My daily base is that I don't eat before lunch or after dinner (although dinner is often 8pm for no good reason), at the moment I'm trying to use BJ Foggs's "tiny habits" ideas so my minimum is 3 days of OMAD a week.

in the past I lost a lot with OMAD & found it easy but my body adjusted after a couple of months & I stopped losing weight 🙄

Jason Fung's therapeutic fasting of 36-48 hour fasts has worked really well but far trickier with food juggling for others...

Hoping that a minimum of 3 OMADs that might become 36/48 hr fasts will fix the too tricky & give up problem and also the body adaption problem 😃

I really like fasting but I have loads of "energy stores" to call on which I suspect makes it easier than for someone with less to lose.

18-6 sounds very doable to me & I strongly suspect that getting the white sugar out of our diets is the key.

GoatsareGOAT · 11/06/2023 20:58

Sorry for the essay 🙈

Peae · 11/06/2023 22:21

Oh I loved Fogg’s book too!

He's great isn't he?
I've listened to him on too many podcasts though so the book was in his voice as I read it 😂

continentallentil · 12/06/2023 20:50

@Peae

There’s a Last Diet Facebook group (run by the author) if you want a bit of community.

NatashaKay · 13/06/2023 00:20

I’m in it! not much going on there. we do have a whatsapp group amongst lovely ladies that share from uk. australia and Argentina

I'm considering getting this book and like the sound of the thoughtful approach. As someone who has proved that willpower isn't (always) enough many times, I'm hoping for something that moves me towards a healthy and unforced relationship with food. But I've read a lot of stuff - what us it about this book in particular that helps, please? I see OP you've had a gradual and sustained weightloss since January - congratulations - can you say why?

Peae · 18/06/2023 21:34

Thought-provoking questions!

But I've read a lot of stuff - what us it about this book in particular that helps, please?
I would say that it's the combination of how it addresses emotional eating (that many books do) with some techniques that feel a bit life-coachy / CBT-y (to me) to match my emotions with new behaviours. I hope me saying that doesn't put anyone off.

I see OP you've had a gradual and sustained weightloss since January - congratulations - can you say why?

The book has really helped me to be honest with myself around some of my behaviours and narratives and to sit with them, really sit with them, and then change them.

Peae · 18/06/2023 21:40

I've had a few days away from home to support someone who is struggling a bit. I've not been able to eat in the way I've been finding helpful recently and I can really, really feel it in my body. It's made me realise that I actually prefer my new way of eating.
Also, something has changed in the way I feel about myself. It's been quite transformative. For example, I've just flossed and cleaned my teeth and tongue with more care and appreciation than I have in ages.

I won't weigh myself for a couple of weeks because I feel heavy and bloated, and because I want to really focus on other things.
