I'm also in Ireland I got prescribed by my GP. Could you go to a different GP?

Newparent2022x · 20/01/2023 17:43

What did you say to go to get approved n how much you pay in chemist.

Are you diabetic? I think ozempic is only licensed for type 2 diabetes so if you're not diabetic then your GP might not be able to prescribe it. What have you tried so far to lose weight? Your GP is right, albeit simplistic, in that you need to eat a healthy diet and exercise. Do you do that? Studies show that most people who lose weight on ozempic gain most of it back within a year of stopping. The side effects are worrying. It's a short term fix from what I've read. I hope you find a long term solution for your weight. There's a few threads about that are for healthier eating, lifestyle changes and sustainable weight loss. They are very welcome

Welcoming.

They can give you thyroid cancer, kidney failure, gall bladder problems and inflammation of the pancreas.

Honestly, these are not magic slimming pills and won't solve your weight problem or depression.

Gall bladder problems and pancreatitis can occur with any fast weightloss, that's not unique to semaglutide. Thyroid cancer has only been seen in rats, there's been no cases in humans.

Semaglutide is actually a very effective weightloss tool for many people. Unfortunately a lot of people regain and gain more once they stop the medication. Even with lifestyle changes and diet changes, it's still hard to keep the weight off.

Lastly you will need a prescription. Juniper seems to be a good place to get one, ask on the ozempic thread.

My understanding is that NHS GPs can't prescribe it this way. Weight loss medications are only available under specialist supervised programmes. Since the drugs require lifetime maintenance, this could be a significant expense for the NHS.

Even for diabetes, because GLP-1s are more expensive, most patients would be expected to try metformin first.

The data on diet is pretty terrible, though. It's like doctors are programmed to say it.

Lots of online pharmacies. Quick meds seems to be the cheapest.

AutisticLegoLover · 21/01/2023 08:36

Well, aren't you charming.

This is an interesting article on ozempic from November last year. Ozempic isn't licensed in Ireland except for type 2 diabetics.

Well then I wonder why your GP wouldn't prescribe it for you?

Happierwithouthim · 21/01/2023 18:00

OP I'm concerned about you & wanting to know what I said to get prescribed. My gp has been my gp for past 9 years & has seen my struggle with weight, hormone issues & has seen me try lose it through exercise & diet to no avail. This is why she prescribed it for me.

@AutisticLegoLover just to say you’re not the only one witnessing the OP’s rudeness towards you. Yeesh.

S70V12 · 21/01/2023 22:23

As one poster mentioned it is perhaps a short term solution. You CAN lose the weight for sure. I’ve managed to do it so I know you can through diet and exercise with an online coach PT. There are loads out there and it is much cheaper than a PT in gym. It works. It keeps you accountable. Mainly being in a calorie deficit. Hitting your macros. Follow a weight training program.

anyone can do it.
go on fitness volt enter your numbers
get your TDEE and calories and macros to lose weight
get calorie counting app like my fitness pal
hit gym 3X week weights
then do cardio 30 mins on other days
drink 3 litres of water
get accountability partner
or get a coach and will take the work for you and help you.
plus it’s cheaper than this drug and save you money in long run.
no fad diets
up to you though.

Happierwithouthim · 21/01/2023 22:35

Unfortunately @S70V12 this wasn't the case for me, no matter what I did the weight kept piling on.

Happierwithouthim · 21/01/2023 22:36

@Newparent2022x I'm on ozempic & it costs €145 per month as I'm using it off license, they will be passing a bill in spring this year for it to be on drug payment scheme which will bring it down to €80 per month

AutisticLegoLover · 21/01/2023 23:05

@TheWayTheLightFalls I'm quite amused at the rudeness actually 🤣 sometimes posters ask for help but only want to hear positive reinforcement rather than a more balanced view or even a questioning view. I have weight to lose so I'm not saying things from a skinny pedestal. Most people who need to lose weight need to take responsibility and control of their health. I do too, and have, and am slowly losing the pounds I want to lose. Hormones as per pp play a big part and we mustn't underestimate their influence on appetite and weight but it's rare for hormones to be the sole cause. Weight is multi-factorial but it's only ourselves who can control what we eat. I am responsible for my food choice and my exercise choices. My exercise is restricted due to chronic conditions but I exercise within my limitations by walking and bouncing on a gym ball. I can't run (except for a bus or train) and don't have the money for the gym or a personal trainer or fad diets for that matter, but I can walk and bounce. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on a drug for life unless I'd tried everything else possible. But that's me, everyone needs to make the choice that's right for them. Im in the UK but I expect GPs in Ireland have to follow protocols and prescribing practices on these drugs and needs to take into account the risks v benefits to the patient. OP sounds very unhappy and desperate but I don't think this drug is the magic fix she thinks it will be.

Labyrinthian · 21/01/2023 23:09

Do you mind saying where are you paying this, a lot cheaper than my prescription €280/month with Allcare - I priced a few places when I got my prescription from endocrinologist but Allcare were cheapest (seems to be a huge variation) but if anyone is doing it for less than would be amazing - thank you
