@TheWayTheLightFalls I'm quite amused at the rudeness actually 🤣 sometimes posters ask for help but only want to hear positive reinforcement rather than a more balanced view or even a questioning view. I have weight to lose so I'm not saying things from a skinny pedestal. Most people who need to lose weight need to take responsibility and control of their health. I do too, and have, and am slowly losing the pounds I want to lose. Hormones as per pp play a big part and we mustn't underestimate their influence on appetite and weight but it's rare for hormones to be the sole cause. Weight is multi-factorial but it's only ourselves who can control what we eat. I am responsible for my food choice and my exercise choices. My exercise is restricted due to chronic conditions but I exercise within my limitations by walking and bouncing on a gym ball. I can't run (except for a bus or train) and don't have the money for the gym or a personal trainer or fad diets for that matter, but I can walk and bounce. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on a drug for life unless I'd tried everything else possible. But that's me, everyone needs to make the choice that's right for them. Im in the UK but I expect GPs in Ireland have to follow protocols and prescribing practices on these drugs and needs to take into account the risks v benefits to the patient. OP sounds very unhappy and desperate but I don't think this drug is the magic fix she thinks it will be.

Read my post. I don't want your diet and exercise help ive been through this with myself and doctor for years, jog on

In Ireland, mybestweight.ie

@Newparent2022x I was talking to @TheWayTheLightFalls, perhaps you misread my post that directly addressed her and thought it was for you. I haven't offered you any diet or exercise advice so perhaps, again, you have misread my posts.

I can't get it anywhere in Ireland off licence. I did order from an online pharmacy in the UK but they cancelled my order because I was using an NI forwarding address :(

Just wanted to say I think you've been treated pretty harshly here too @AutisticLegoLover and I'm not entirely sure why!

Do you mind saying where are you paying this, a lot cheaper than my prescription €280/month with Allcare - I priced a few places when I got my prescription from endocrinologist but Allcare were cheapest (seems to be a huge variation) but if anyone is doing it for less than would be amazing - thank you

This is in my local pharmacy, maybe try calling around & pricing it in other pharmacies near you? That's a huge difference

You took the time to give op helpful advice but they don't seem to want to hear anything except how to get drugs!

Going on ozempic was a last resort for me and goes against my core beliefs of avoiding medication at all costs.

AutisticLegoLover · 22/01/2023 12:19

@Happierwithouthim it sounds like your GP made an educated decision based on your medical history and the risks and benefits. The benefits to you must outweigh the risks and I'm glad that he or she took the responsible approach. I'm not sure online services are quite as ethical and it's a great money-maker for them so they might not ask too many questions and anyone could lie. You have lots of factors there influencing your weight and I'm glad the GP could help you and that you are much happier now. It sounds like you are doing great.

If you go via your GP they can refer to endocrinologist who can prescribe it if it is suitable for you and you can get it at a regular pharmacy then (you just pay the high price as it's not covered on drugs payment scheme)

I'm also in Ireland I got prescribed by my GP. Could you go to a different GP?

I went to my gp and they wouldn't prescribe either :( I'm going to try online

Hi I ordered via manual manual.co/r/U-Q5gZ4aTsmW. It cost me £123, they start you on a 0.25 dose before moving you on to 0.5 and finally the 1mg

NessVan · 27/03/2023 11:00

I get mines on Right Angled, £139.99 +pp however I'm in Northern Ireland. I'm not sure about postage to ROI, but if you know anyone in NI you could send to their address? I started at 13stone beginning of January and have lost 1 stone 3lbs which I'm happy about. Good luck!

Tibbb · 27/03/2023 11:04

If you do manage to obtain either, be aware that the side effects are brutal. I know several people currently on Ozempic and all of them have had severe bloating, uncontrollable diarrhoea, gas, nausea and vomiting. They are losing weight as they can't eat much at all, if anything.

Be careful and perhaps listen to your GP. The side effects of these weight loss jabs are awful.

NessVan · 27/03/2023 14:06

I've been on it since January and didn't get any side effects, I think it differs from person to person

My understanding is that NHS GPs can't prescribe it this way. Weight loss medications are only available under specialist supervised programmes. Since the drugs require lifetime maintenance, this could be a significant expense for the NHS.

Even for diabetes, because GLP-1s are more expensive, most patients would be expected to try metformin first.

The data on diet is pretty terrible, though. It's like doctors are programmed to say it.

People don’t see, to have kept up with news
these drugs are about to be approved by NICE for 2 years use only. That means GP can prescribe and are being told by NICE this is an effective treatment

personally, I’d be holding fire. As other people have pointed out thes3 drugs only appear to be effective while taking them.

almost all people taking them and stopping put weight back on and more - which is the issue that applied to ALL types of current weight loss treatments form all diets, to gastric bands. More and more science is com8ng out as to why this happens but it is now well proven that loosing weight gradually causes the metabolism to slow and this never recovers - the body continues to believe it is in starvation mode and metabolism gets increasingly slower but more effiecnet, that is not reversible - hence why weight gained mostly ends up exceeding weight before dieting.

until this metabolic issue has been controlled, or these drugs are approved for use for life time , then I really don’t see the point

AutisticLegoLover · 27/03/2023 18:04

The below is from the NICE guidance published on 8th March this year:

Semaglutide is recommended as an option for weight management, including weight loss and weight maintenance, alongside a reduced- calorie diet and increased physical activity in adults, only if:
*• it is used for a maximum of 2 years, and within a specialist weight management service providing multidisciplinary management of overweight or obesity (including but not limited to tiers 3 and 4), and
• they have at least 1 weight-related comorbidity and:

  • a body mass index (BMI) of at least 35.0 kg/m2, or
  • a BMI of 30.0 kg/m2 to 34.9 kg/m2 and meet the criteria for referral to specialist weight management services in NICE's guideline on obesity: identification, assessment and management.
Use lower BMI thresholds (usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m2) for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean family backgrounds.*

It's not going to just be prescribed to anyone who asks for it, there are strict criteria and it's to be used as part of a wider weight management service so not just there's your prescription off you go.

Hi,

Can those who have started already tell me how they've found it? What has progress been like?

Just ordered today and looking forward to getting started. Need to lose weight for IVF next year and just unsure how long it could realistically take. Hoping for good results from it!
