How have you lost weight

Please can you tell me how you've lost weight, if you've had a lot to lose, how long did it take you and which plan did you follow? Also how much exercise you do a week?
I've got about six stone to lose, I'm aware it's not going to be a quick fix and I'm prepared for this to be a slow and steady process, I'd appreciate your thoughts and ideas? TIA

I get sugar cravings which has led to a lot of binging on snacks and sweets, the one thing that worked well for me was a keto style diet of high fat, low carbs. A high fat diet keeps you full for a long time and takes away sugar cravings, that cut down my snacking between meals to zero as I felt no need to eat between meals.
I also don't like most veg due to my sensory issues so the only suitable healthy diet for me is a keto or carnivorous diet.

Six stone give or take a pound by doing Weight Watchers. Wish I’d done it earlier. Have gone from a 22/20 to an 8.

Oh well, works really well for me and eating pasta means I don't want to eat crap as I'm full. I eat avacado ,never had a muller light and rarely eat sugar.

I walked out of SW when I was told this. For people who are pre diabetic or diabetic, or have PCOS , that way of thinking is a disaster. It’s also a nutritional nonsense.

BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood · 13/02/2023 01:27

It was fine to eat all the pasta I wanted but avocados were off limits.

Well, if you want to lose weight that's sound advice. As I said before you can't eat all the pasta you want on SW,it has to be part of a balanced meal which is the whole point. You can eat avacado ,you just need to be aware of how much you're eating and track (syn) it.

Slow and steady with lifestyle changes for me.

I started with logging all my food in my fitness pal (and then moved on to nutracheck, which I prefer). That gave me an idea of how many calories were actually in some good that I was consuming, and a better understanding of what a sensible portion looked like. It was quite an eye opener to be honest.

Apart from setting a calorie limit, I haven't followed any particular diet or eating plan - I didn't think that would help me achieve the long term sustainable changes I wanted.

I took up exercise for health rather than weight loss, I enjoy doing Les mills classes at home for strength and cardio, and as a family we started going out walking at the weekend a lot (especially during lockdown when there was nothing else to do).

Good luck - it can seem daunting, but though I've got a little bit to go, I look and feel so much better now, it's really been worth the hard work.

boboshmobo · 13/02/2023 08:24

Slimming world is the only thing that has worked for me despite trying everything and having a wanky thyroid . I lost 2 stone in lockdown following it online and have kept it off following the guidelines

My sporadic attempts at losing weight have mainly included cutting down on the sugary food & takeaways which I ate a lot of before, and going to the gym 2-3 a week or doing home YouTube workouts. This has worked to an extent as I’ve lost 2 stone since late 2021, reduced body fat percentage and went down 1-2 dress sizes. my issue has been a lack of consistency - or I think I’d have lost more and faster!

This year I’ve been determined to keep it up and make it a lifestyle change, so have been using my fitness pal and food scales for portion control, avoiding takeaways and processed food and I’m seeing more progress. I’m also doing moderate exercise for 30 minutes 4-6 times a week. I’d like to add a daily outdoor walk to that too when the weather warms up.

I have a stone more to lose before I’m back within my recommended weight range. Considering I was 3 stone overweight 18 months ago I’m still pleased at the progress. I’m so much more toned and have no loose skin from weight loss.

btw, I think taking body pics, measuring inches, body fat & other metrics are actually a better way of tracking progress, so maybe don’t get too stuck on the scale. A fitness influencer woman I follow on social media is around my height and 20 pounds heavier but looks so much slimmer than me! She lifts weights so I assume it’s a high muscle mass & loose skin contributing to the heavier weight.

Why is avocado always the thing people obsess over when trying to trash slimming world 😂 if I were doing a calorie controlled diet I wouldn't eat avocado either. I understand that nutritionally an avocado is better for you than a mars bar, but for weight loss purposes alone, a calorie is a calorie and you need to spend more energy than you consume.

It's always the avocados 😂 it's not even that nice!!

Slimming World works, and promotes a healthy way of eating. Even if it is anti-avocado 😁

Experts in health have discovered that cutting calories, obtaining physical activity, eating a healthy diet, and getting adequate sleep can all help people lose weight. In some situations, a person may benefit from surgery, such as bariatric surgery, to lose weight.

It really doesn’t promote a healthy way of eating at all.

Lots of veg, fruit, protein and minimal carbs plus daily pint of calcium and fibre- no,not sensible at all .

faffadoodledo · 06/03/2025 08:44

Maybe I missed something when I did SW (successfully, and successfully keeping weight off) but I ate loads of fruit and veg and lower fat dairy, fewer cabs, and enough protein to keep me active. What are other people doing on SW that it doesn't work? I ate filling, healthy whole foods.
My only complaint was that i found myself eating way too much chicken. Was thoroughly sick of it! I am now edging towards vegan so have replaced meat protein with pulses.
I never ate the stupid bars they sold either.

faffadoodledo · 06/03/2025 08:45

I do think the problem with SW is probably that it doesnt address WHY some people get overweight in the first place, so when they come off plan and away from meetings they slip back. But it doesnt market itself as a form of psychotherapy. And our society clearly has big population level problems with food which scramble my brain - I have no idea how to fix them.

Same as with any eating plan including injections.

faffadoodledo · 06/03/2025 08:53

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor perhaps. But it still worked for me regardless. Haven't looked back. I wasn't hugely obese, just overweight, and it's as if SW adjusted my tiller and set me back on the right course. The group meeting element and accountability definitely helped. i couldn't have done it online.

Anyway. It's interesting to me that it's so divisive. People talk about it being a cult! Six months for me, then out! Been a healthy size 10 since, and got my sporty self back hooray!

Oh I'm with you, worked a treat for me too,it's like mindful eating and makes me think what I'm putting in my mouth. I'm 3.5 stone down. It's healthy eating that's all. Glad it worked for you too.
