How have you lost weight

Please can you tell me how you've lost weight, if you've had a lot to lose, how long did it take you and which plan did you follow? Also how much exercise you do a week?
I've got about six stone to lose, I'm aware it's not going to be a quick fix and I'm prepared for this to be a slow and steady process, I'd appreciate your thoughts and ideas? TIA

Fast 800

I've just started this. Can't believe how easy it is. How long are you doing it for?

I lost 70lbs with keto about 4 years ago. It stayed off when I slowly reintroduced some carbs. It took 6 months and had the benefit of completely getting rid of my psoriasis and ibs.

Brilliant

SalviaOfficinalis · 11/01/2023 08:51

I’ve come off the pill. That helped a lot- if you’re on any hormonal contraception then consider whether it’s contributing.

I have also started doing intermittent fasting - but this has only been possible since my appetite reduced from coming off the pill.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 11/01/2023 08:54

I’ve lost 82kg over 2y so far with intermittent fasting and calorie counting.

Not a quick fix but I purposely chose to do it this way because I felt that
A. calorie counting would help me control my portion sizes and teach me better habits (which it has unless you put a tube of Pringles infront of me…)
and B. It would teach me that over a period of time that it became normal and I had a better chance of keeping it off which I have

I have about 20-30kg left to lose (not entirely sure what my end weight is tbh) and am currently doing a Nupo milkshake diet to kick start some more weight loss again after Christmas but will continue with calorie counting and intermittent fasting

I’ve lost 82kg over 2y

That is phenomenal, well done

Mostwonderful · 11/01/2023 08:56

If I really stuck to it I could have lost 6 stone in a year calorie counting and upping steps/exercise.

I did 3.5 stone over 5 months but then sacked it off :/

PeopleAreToads · 11/01/2023 08:57

I lost 10kg a few years ago and have kept it off since. It's pretty boring, also simple and came down to 3 things for me
Calorie counting - used my fitness pal and stuck to it

Finding exercise I enjoyed - that made me stick to it and go to 4 classes a week

Walking - I think this is the main one because its really become a habit. I do a 30 min brisk walk most lunch times and evenings, and just see it as part of my routine now rather than exercise. Being just generally more active with this sort of thing will up your calorie burn

Dentistlakes · 11/01/2023 09:03

Logging everything I eat in mfp and working to a macro split of 40% protein, 40% carbs, 20% fat. X4 sessions resistance training (the most important imo) to preserve and build muscle, x4 running and if I have time ftp training on the bike (2-3 sessions).

The most important thing is your nutrition, you should aim for a calorie deficit of about 500 calories per day. Don’t be tempted to cut your calories too low. If you want to prioritise any exercise I would say resistance training and walking. Cardio is great for cardiovascular health but it’s not a particularly efficient way to lose weight.

Above all, be consistent and don’t give up. If you fall off the wagon get right back on it straight away. Don’t become discouraged and give up. It will take time but once you get the momentum going it will become second nature. It’s not a matter of losing weight and going back to your old ways, it should be a permanent change in your lifestyle.

Good luck op, you absolutely can do it!

I've had two stone to lose for past 10 years plus extra stone thanks to lockdown!
I would lose a couple of pound then put it back on the following week.
But I was diagnosed with diabetes last year , but of a shock as had no idea.
I cut out bread pasta rice potatoes cereals biscuits etc so virtually no carbs . No alcohol.
I eat loads of meat fish cheese for my protein and top up with veg etc I allow myself one small thing a day , like a ginger biscuit and one treat a week such as fish and chips without the chips !
I've lost one and half stone and two dress sizes . I came to a bit of a halt a few weeks ago so upped my protein and cut treats and am now losing again.
I've , over years tried every diet known to man and have always failed after first week.
The shock of being told I was in danger of major illness and was obese .. ( size 14) did it for me plus I'm never hungry.
Google a low carb diabetic diet.

In February last year I was admitted to hospital for 12 days with a gallbladder infection. I'm on the waiting list to get my gallbladder removed and the surgeon recommended I eat low fat/low dairy in the meantime...to lessen the chances of another attack. It took me until April to kick my ass into gear and take his advice seriously. Since then I've lost almost 4 stone.
I decided on a 1200 calorie a day regime and as I'm restricted mobility wise just some gentle walking as often as I can. (I'm on crutches due to a back injury)

I swapped ordinary milk for almond milk and have absolutely no butter, oil, spread, cheese, cream or mayo. It sounds deadly boring but you get used to it and in a way I kinda enjoyed the challenge of trying to make what I could eat interesting.
I eat lots of fruit and veg and stick mainly to chicken, turkey, ham and pulses for protein. A days meals would be something like this:-
Breakfast....porridge made with water, topped with blueberries, mango and strawberries ( frozen fruit is cheaper )
Lunch....Sandwich made with 2 slices of 60cal a slice wholemeal bread. Filling of ham/chicken/turkey/tuna with lettuce, tomato, beetroot and gherkin. Plus a packet of Slimfast crisps , 77cals a pkt.
Dinner....Last night was chicken, sweet potato and lentil stew. Other times it can be chicken, ham, turkey , fish with usually 3 servings of veg...e.g. Broccoli , carrots and green beans.
I try to keep around 150 cals spare for a 'treat' of some kind.
My dp and sons call me the diet Nazi and say I'm too strict but I'm feeling good and my gallbladder spasms have greatly calmed down. Plus I'm now a size 10/12 and haven't been this slim in years and damn it...I look good! 😁

boboshmobo · 11/01/2023 09:23

@Ifulikepinacoladas exactly !

I lost 3 stone using slimming world and have kept it off for 2 years using the app to make good decisions .

It is a change forever , I also don't eat tonnes of pasta or yogurts !

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/01/2023 09:37

I'm the same OP, I started SW on Nov 7th and I'm just shy of 1.5 stone loss. It's been really easy to be honest and I eat more now that I ever have. I walk half an hour to an hour daily or sometimes I go on the excercise bike but can't do loads as I have some mobility issues. I'm doing it online as I don't really fancy going to the classes although that might change later.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/01/2023 09:43

Ifulikepinacoladas · 11/01/2023 08:06

I've followed SW for 19 years now and am below my original target weight. I'm not as strict as I used to be but it educates you so you can make better choices.

People on here always talk about how the weight will go straight back on once you stop, the point with SW is you don't stop, it's a healthy way of living / eating. And I'm not obsessed with muller lights or mountains of pasta 😄

I agree that it's a whole lifestyle change but for me the whole beauty of it is that I can see myself doing this long-term as it's so easy and I never feel hungry and it's so easy to adapt to family meals. I haven't changed any of the meals I normally cook apart from using spray oil instead of olive oil and I was eating far too much bread. Of course if people diet and then go back to old habits the weight will go back on,thays true with any diet.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/01/2023 09:44

I've never had a muller light but I do eat pasta at least twice a week 🤣

I lost 8 stone with keto and moved to carnivore diet for autoimmune disease. I’ve kept it off for 7 years now!

Carnivore worked for us too. Ended up just eating 1 small meat based meal a day, with a few berries here and there, a morning coffee is our treat, and never looked back. Weight dropped and no high or lows from food.

ageingdisgracefully · 11/01/2023 09:51

Calorie counting using MFP. Increasing to 1500 to maintain. Tedious and unfancy but it works for me.

fibeee · 11/01/2023 09:51

I am also on a 6 stone weight loss journey. What is working for me so far is weight training 3x a week and tracking my food on my fitness pal.

A PT at my gym worked out my total calories for the day and the amount of protein, carbs and fat I should eat using a TDEE calculator which you can find by doing a quick Google search.

My split is 30% calories from protein, 40% fat and 30% carbs. I feel great eating this way and I’ve stopped snacking and late night binging.

Weight is coming off easily at around 1.5-2lb a week and I can feel some nice muscle definition coming in which will hopefully become noticeable soon as I loose more fat.

faffadoodledo · 11/01/2023 09:53

It really is very personal. I won't ever calorie count bc as a teen a sailed very close to anorexia. And calorie counting was my obsession.

I won't do a diet which demands lots of meat. Because I don't eat it (or much diary).

And I love veg so yes SW (without the silly bars!) works for me.

MrsRandom123 · 11/01/2023 09:54

I lost 6 & a half stone 10 years ago & i’m still 6 stone down (the last half a stone i had to exercise a lot / watch what i was eating constantly & i didn’t want to live like that so where i am is healthy / manageable

i’ve always been over weight tried diet plans from hospital, slim fast, weight watchers etc & what finally worked was tracking on my fitness pal & sticking to 1200 cals for month then slightly up to 1400 it was tough but doable as i was determined having just had my daughter rhat i wouldn’t be “the fat mum” at school. I struggled to git on a wee train ride with her & that pushed me on & i wanted to learn to cook, eat healthy, exercise & just generally set an example.

it took me all in about 15 months but the last few months were more obsessing about every little pound which is why i eased up slightly as i didn’t want a disorder or her to see me not eating etc. i went from an 18 (pushing a 20) to an 8. Even know if i’m up 3/4lbs from holiday or christmas if i cut back for a few weeks i’m back down

Ansjovis · 11/01/2023 09:57

I didn't have too much to lose but I would have taken the same approach regardless. No food is forbidden and food is not a punishment or a reward. Developing a healthy relationship with food is of highest importance. I educated myself on portion sizes and stuck to them, though not to the point where I was weighing to the gram and getting obsessed. I also visited a dietician who reviewed my diet and recommended changes based on foods I already eat and like, which was worth every penny.

Exercise wise I run about two miles a day. It's slow but it all helps. Constantly pushing yourself to max heart rate is bad for you and should be avoided. I also joined a gym where they only do classes and I go there twice a week. It helps because I know that if faced with a free choice of equipment in a gym I would not be as productive as I am when all I've got to do is do what I'm told.

Doing this I lost on average two pounds a week. It may not sound like much but for me slow and steady = sustainable. If you make too many changes at once it will be so much harder for you to stick to and that's what's really important. No use losing four pounds a week if you can't keep up the routine when you get to your goal weight;

DanseAvecLesLoups · 11/01/2023 08:27

For me:

Cut our the booze (or seriously reduce it)
No junk snacks in the house
Huel shake for breakfast
No bread
Home made soups for lunch
Simple portion controlled meals in the evenings (no processed food, stir fries, jacket potatoes, large salads, lots of veg, pulses, etc)

As much exercise as you can manage, proper exercise, not a 15 min walk around the block, prolonged raising of your heart rate, preferably as part of some programme (couch to 5km, park run, weights programme). I get a bit irritated on here at times when I read some of the 'it does not work' comments when it comes to exercise, to me it has always been vital, not just for weight control but for general wellbeing)

Yes exercise is part of maintaining weight and very important for cardiovascular health but that doesn't mean it's going to drive significant fat loss

Clairedelaplume · 11/01/2023 10:20

Michael Mosley Fast 800 (book) is AMAZING if you have the commitment.

theremustonlybeone · 11/01/2023 10:22

Harrysmummy246 I agree with you, i know what i need to do to maintain and or lose weight. I can exercise daily and get my steps in but if i take to wine and snacking and go over my calorie allowance i gain weight. I have a bloaty gut and that only goes if i reduce calories. Exercise does nothing and so despite being fit my body doesnt always reflect that due to my calorie intake. It is a balance

daisymade · 11/01/2023 10:28

The issue I have with slimming world is that it puts “good foods” into sinful categories and if you’re not educated in nutritional values and blindly following the plan I think that is dangerous.

I will never agree with the fact an avo has the same syns as a mars bar but you can eat unlimited white pasta.

BUT it does work, particularly if you have a lot to lose and you take it on as a lifestyle change rather than a diet.

HelloBunny · 11/01/2023 10:34

Slimming World. I just treat it as a basic portion size / low-cal thing. I don’t stick to it to the letter, nor eat any of the diet foods. Lost 40lbs.
