Why We Eat (Too Much) thread 6

1000 replies

TheLeadbetterLife · 15/07/2022 10:59

Whoops, we let thread 5 get away from us a bit there...

I'm going to boringly copy-paste the previous thread opener, because it's too hot to be imaginative.

Welcome to thread 6 of discussion, encouragement and advice inspired by the book Why We Eat (Too Much), by Dr Andrew Jenkinson.

The basic principles of this "diet" (it's not one in the traditional sense, as it's meant to be a permanent set of changes), are as follows:

Cut out ultra-processed food

Massively reduce sugar, carbs, refined flours and wheat

Eat a wide variety of vegetables, whole grains and fruit

Eat full fat dairy and other healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil

Improve the ratio of omega 3 to 6 by eating greens, fish, eggs and grass-fed meat, and cutting out ultra-refined seed oils

Important lifestyle changes include getting plenty of rest, relaxation and sleep, as well as taking a moderate amount of exercise (or more, if you like that sort of thing).

You don't need to count calories (in fact, you shouldn't), though it may help to count carbs or glycemic load, at least to begin with, until you get the hang of it.

Some of us share recipes by following each other on Copy Me That - www.copymethat.com/recipebox/the-leadbetter-life/6661160/

As well as the book mentioned in the title, the principles are similar to those espoused by the likes of Rangan Chatterjee, Robert Lustig, Tim Spector and Michael Mosley.

There are many successes on this thread, and the main thing is that we are aiming to make permanent, sustainable changes to adjust our weight set-points downwards.

Hi @PotatoCatkin welcome!

stilldumdedumming · 06/01/2023 22:36

Thank you @Words - that's pretty inspirational. I have a similar- Ish journey ahead. I'm nearly over this virus thing and starting to give some serious thought. I've stopped the rubbish oat milk so the next thing is bread.

Apart weight though, I know I just feel so much better eating this way.

Words · 07/01/2023 06:13

Welcome @PotatoCatkin and good to see you @stilldumdedumming.

I think I am going to go back to weekly weigh ins rather than clambering on the scales most days, as my weight is fluctuating at the moment as my body readjusts to being back on plan. I know this but it's still dispiriting to find I am slightly up again today.

Good luck to all our new too-muchers, and if you're lurking why not pop in to say hi? We're a very friendly crowd .

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 07/01/2023 07:24

Hi guys - lurker and occasional previous poster here. I am very inspired by your stories and ‘know’ this is the way to go but have great trouble sticking to it! Am back following most of the principles in the new year helped along by Ozempic - which gives me the feeling I am cheating and shouldn’t post here🙂. Definite acceleration in my weight loss since I changed my diet (again) after Christmas to follow the WWE(TM) way.

I have a Tim Spector book on order to give me a bit more inspiration and re watched Michael Misisely documentary from last year about government policies over the years. Just goes to show we are in our own really and have to work hard to create our non-obesogenic environment at home and be so vigilant outside.

stilldumdedumming · 07/01/2023 09:32

Yes the government policy is pretty frustrating.

Just to say the the twin Drs have a new thorough examination podcast series on how to change. As part of the UPF series (which I found helpful) they interviewed a change expert and it was really interesting- so it might have some inspiration for some of us.

stilldumdedumming · 07/01/2023 09:34

@SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun (what is that name about? Sounds fun!) 'cheating' isn't a thing! Maybe it's a helping hand.

Tiredandbored · 07/01/2023 10:11

Hi @PotatoCatkin and welcome!

I hope everyone has a nice Saturday planned. I'm off to do the grocery shop soon, have had a hearty breakfast of porridge to head off any hunger pangs that would lead to impulse purchases. Am going out for a run this afternoon, then a chilled evening at home planned.

Need to have a think about dinner this eve as the kids have requested pizza. Not sure what I'm having, but it'll definitely not be pizza!

Thanks 😃. I named myself after a cruise ship! Serenade of the Seas. Happy holiday memories. Not so good add for healthy eating.

Welcome @PotatoCatkin!

This weekend is the last of the Christmas season feasting for us. It's been extended a bit due to unexpected guests and unexpected work, which has been annoying and exhausting. I can't wait to get my home back, take down the decorations and become monk-like again with my diet.

I don't really feel like I've had a break though, which is frustrating, as I was knackered before Christmas as it was.

We have some people coming for lunch tomorrow, for which I'm making a gammon joint and dauphinoise potatoes, followed by a chestnut pavlova (a lot of egg whites to use up).

From Monday onwards, I will be ascetic. I won't be weighing myself until February though.

Thanks for the lovely welcome!

As well as following this WOE, I'm doing 16:8 IF. I've switched to full fat dairy and my fridge is now stuffed with vegetables and salad.

Im aiming for at least 10 different vegetables/fruit (but less of the fruit than veg) a day with at least 30 different varieties each week. Having tried keto in the past, I know how easy it is to fall in the trap of existing on mainly eggs and cheese!

I'm going to make a chilli today - beans and lentil based as I'm a veggie though! I'll probably add some finely grated courgette and carrot for texture and flavour too.

I'm also going to hard boil some eggs, chop some veggies for crudités and make some mushroom pâté.

How's everyone's weekend so far?

I'm going to start listening to the Thorough Examination podcast while in the kitchen this afternoon. It sounds really good.

At least, I'm going to try! I have ADHD and am utterly terrible at focussing on things like podcasts and audiobooks 😬

Hello, can I join as I have just purchased this book , I'm goi ng to try and read through all the previous threads

Hi @Daisymaker welcome

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 07/01/2023 20:34

I had a long drive this evening so listened to the new Chris and Xand podcast. Interesting - thanks for the recommendation.

Words · 09/01/2023 06:46

Welcome @Daisymaker! And hi again @SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun.

@PotatoCatkin that sounds like a great plan. I do all those things too. After reading Michael Mosley I also try to eat fermented stuff, so kefir and yoghurt ( home made when I can be bothered) and also I have a lot of diluted raw apple cider vinegar- I enjoy sour/ acid flavours but recognise that might not be for everyone.

@TheLeadbetterLife - that sounds like an exhausting ( even if enjoyable) schedule. Hope the sleeping is ok. Bet you're looking forward to getting your place back to normal again after the hols.

stilldumdedumming · 09/01/2023 08:03

@PotatoCatkin do you have a mushroom pate recipe at all?

Plenish is on offer on Amazon at the moment

stilldumdedumming · 09/01/2023 08:04

For the oat milk drinkers. I'm still recovering from the virus. I'm trying work again today - 2 failed attempts last week

I use this one https://cleanfooddirtygirl.com/tips-for-adding-more-healthy-foods-into-your-diet/

The mushroom pâté recipe is at the bottom. I usually use less ginger and no fresh parsley as I'm not a fan but it's good on cucumber and ryvita!

PotatoCatkin · 09/01/2023 12:03

@Words I've just bought some organic acv so I need to look into how I can incorporate that!

Words · 10/01/2023 06:08

@PotatoCatkin : I dilute it with fizzy water and drink a glass to break my fast. Or there is salad dressing and I also sometimes include it in a veg smoothie. The nicest I've found is Willy's but it's very expensive. It does go on special offer from time to time though.

I stress ate chocolate yesterday but am giving myself a break. Mother very unwell again after a very nasty fall in her care home, so doing lots of back and forth on top of the day job. I was concerned the injuries were not accidental at one point but am relieved that the medics have now ruled that out. Thankfully work is being very accommodating.

I plan on being more restrained eating-wise today. It's no help that there's a very nice farm shop with hand made sweet goodies as well as a superb but overdraft-inducing meat counter in the same village as the home, which tends to lure me in if I am not careful.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 10/01/2023 12:07

Pre shop scraping the cupboards out lunch here and I and having some freekah which I used to eat as it is whole grain and has had some good PR from some plan so used to be on but I think it doesn’t really fit in with this plan as it is wheat. Any thoughts on that?

Aria999 · 11/01/2023 01:00

Sorry to hear your mum is struggling @Words xx

Words · 11/01/2023 05:57

Thanks @Aria999 . She was somewhat better yesterday but at 91 things change very quickly in either direction, so just taking things a day at a time for now.

@SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun I had to look up freekeh- it's durum wheat I learn, so probably not on plan but if you're anything like me you'll eat it anyway rather than waste it - and probably have already!

Last night I had fish roasted in a bag with butter and capers, with spinach and roasted veg ( peppers and kale) .Venison liver this evening ( the Christmas freezer stock take is yielding all sorts of surprises). I'd do that with crispy bacon and fried mushrooms and have it with the rest of the spinach.

I plan to take the rest of the fish and roasted peppers flaked and chopped up to the home today as a packed lunch, maybe with a hard boiled egg mixed in, with lots of s and p and olive oil. I've got used to thinking up sandwich alternatives by now!

I've learned the hard way that when things get stressful it's best to pay extra attention to the food, if you have time and energy to do so. It helps keep spirits up and avoids a destructive journey off plan.
