Why We Eat (Too Much) thread 6

1000 replies

TheLeadbetterLife · 15/07/2022 10:59

Whoops, we let thread 5 get away from us a bit there...

I'm going to boringly copy-paste the previous thread opener, because it's too hot to be imaginative.

Welcome to thread 6 of discussion, encouragement and advice inspired by the book Why We Eat (Too Much), by Dr Andrew Jenkinson.

The basic principles of this "diet" (it's not one in the traditional sense, as it's meant to be a permanent set of changes), are as follows:

Cut out ultra-processed food

Massively reduce sugar, carbs, refined flours and wheat

Eat a wide variety of vegetables, whole grains and fruit

Eat full fat dairy and other healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil

Improve the ratio of omega 3 to 6 by eating greens, fish, eggs and grass-fed meat, and cutting out ultra-refined seed oils

Important lifestyle changes include getting plenty of rest, relaxation and sleep, as well as taking a moderate amount of exercise (or more, if you like that sort of thing).

You don't need to count calories (in fact, you shouldn't), though it may help to count carbs or glycemic load, at least to begin with, until you get the hang of it.

Some of us share recipes by following each other on Copy Me That - www.copymethat.com/recipebox/the-leadbetter-life/6661160/

As well as the book mentioned in the title, the principles are similar to those espoused by the likes of Rangan Chatterjee, Robert Lustig, Tim Spector and Michael Mosley.

There are many successes on this thread, and the main thing is that we are aiming to make permanent, sustainable changes to adjust our weight set-points downwards.

Another pound off today. That's 9.4lbs off in seven weeks, takes me to 10st 4.8 which is a bmi of 25.7 at 5'3". Still not been hungry!

Aria999 · 17/10/2023 19:54

Yay well done @Wrapunzel ! You are on a roll!

Yay well done @Wrapunzel ! You are on a roll!

Don't mention rolls 🤭 I gazed longingly at the family pizza tonight and then tucked in to a whole pack of cauliflower cheese instead Blush bloody lovely

Wrapunzel · 25/10/2023 20:10

I'll keep the thread going as everyone in real life has admired my weight loss but glazed over if I tell them how I've done it Grin
I had some toast at the weekend as had a minor hangover and I was genuinely horribly hangry by lunchtime, it must be something to do with blood sugar

Aria999 · 25/10/2023 20:11

Yes I also find toast the gateway to perdition, sadly 😢

Glad your weight loss is still going well!

Thanks aria
I'm on hols this week but finding the WOE reasonably easy to stick to as self catering mostly. The kids' waffles were calling me yesterday but just had a nibble to see what I was missing Grin

TheLeadbetterLife · 03/11/2023 09:51

How's everyone doing? I'm still working towards my exercise goal - it's hit and miss, as I often find a way to shift a workout down to the bottom of the to-do list.

We'll need a new thread soon!

Hi @TheLeadbetterLife !

Not doing very well from a plan perspective. I never really shed the summer lbs and I am gradually creeping up again, as I think I tend to in the autumn.

Can't pinpoint why exactly but i have been eating occasional cheese toasties and I suspect a little goes a long way!

TheLeadbetterLife · 03/11/2023 11:28

Mm we do love a cheese toastie in this house too. We always try to make it with lots of butter and cheese, and have it with a side of kimchi and salad to offset the carbs.

But yes, this is the reason that I need to get more serious about exercise - so I can get away with the carbs. I'm pretty happy with my diet after a couple of years on this plan. I stick to it about 80% of the time and my weight loss is fairly stable. It's when I stop exercising that things slide.

Ah interesting about exercise, that's a great way of looking at it. Once I've lost a bit more I might allow myself a bit of bread on the days I run!
I gained 2lbs on hols last week, almost all off again in five days (three days weighing higher then straight back down this morning!) set point doing its thing?!

Andrew Jenkinson's book is 99p on the kindle daily deals today

How’s everyone doing over Christmas? I have been ignoring this woe for months but hoping to give it another go soon. I see there is a new book coming out in January and I have it on order with my Christmas book token. It’s called How to Eat (and still lose weight).

Wrapunzel · 04/01/2024 08:34

Hi runningandsinging and everyone
I gave myself a lot more leeway December and ate what I wanted for Christmas week, three days back on the woe and I've lost the 2lbs I "gained", my set point in action?
I'm back down to 10st 4 now, still a bit chunky than I'd like for my frame and height (5'3") but I have an important wedding in may that I'd like to be 9st 7 for so that's my target. 10lbs in 4.5 months very doable I hope and i still haven't started running to speed things up.

RunningAndSinging · 04/01/2024 12:22

Wow, well done. I am working my way back gradually. I have quit sugar and made my batch cooked lunches with flaxseeds and coconut oil. Trying to remember what else I need to do as I haven’t reread the book.

No bread or pasta ideally?
Lots of fish and green veg?
Avoid sunflower oil / processed food

RunningAndSinging · 04/01/2024 12:24

Aha! I have re-read the op on this thread. Very helpful 😃

Aria999 · 04/01/2024 18:47

Hi all, gained 2lbs over Christmas on top of previous gains so am currently about 8lbs over target.

It really does not take much to bump my set point up at the moment.

I do stay stable and (very) gradually lose weight when I am on plan but a little deviation seems to go a long way 😥

Wrapunzel · 04/01/2024 19:11

I found that aria, only a meal or snack off plan per day and I felt like I chunked up quite quickly! Think some of it is wheat/sugar bloat though

I still have three cans of Pepsi max a day so not a great upf avoider Blush

fireplacecandle · 18/01/2024 09:40

Bought the new book (out today) and skim read some. Bit disappointed to see he is now plugging a website/plan (Metabology). Seems a bit Zoe-esque. Was hoping for more meal ideas I think (there are some).

MamanCherry · 18/01/2024 13:51

@fireplacecandle , I came back to the thread to see if anyone had bought the new book. I am supposed to be on a book no buy at the moment but will buy it if it's helpful. I struggled to stick to the advice in book#1, will be interested to hear more about the new one when you've had chance to read it.

Turboislander · 18/01/2024 13:59

I pre-ordered the audio version as I had a couple of unused credits. Think the audio version is also out today as well but haven't had a chance to check yet. Curious to see what he has to say. Found the first book really interesting. Managed to follow the advice for a while and saw a gradual shift downwards of weight but haven't been so good recently and the weight has been creeping on again.

RunningAndSinging · 18/01/2024 18:19

I got my book last week(probably an error from Amazon). I have read the first half which summarises the first book I would say. Much less detail but the main messages are there. I think the second half is going to be about strategies to change your habits. Need to keep reading.

I keep falling off the wagon so perhaps it will help.

RunningAndSinging · 21/01/2024 13:16

I have finished the book and would say it is helpful to give your motivation a boost but the first book is probably better. In the second half of the book he talks about habits, goals vs changing who you are, how to stock your store cupboard, methods for de-stressing, exercise, our food environment, how to cook and some recipes.

He has some good points and I like the bit on habit formation. I think the main new idea in the book (for me) is the idea of changing your identity (someone who looks after themselves by eating nutritious food for example) rather than having weight loss goal and suffering through out of character behaviour to get there. He says in the acknowledgements that he was being hassled to write another book and didn’t feel he had anything new to say until he met someone who gave him this idea.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 27/01/2024 21:19

Can anyone shed any light on why we should eat full fat greek yoghurt rather than 0%? I eat Fage and there are no added sweeteners or the like.

I think it's because it fills you up more so you don't need to snack on carbs
