To those who've had the surgery with post abdominal surgery - were you charged more? My best pal is a surgeon (O&G, though) and her opinion was that if he'd doubled the price she thought he basically didn't want to do it/ it wouldn't be advised...?

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 28/12/2022 18:24

Ah, should probs say I had peritonitis so might be a mess in there?

Anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 30/12/2022 19:52

8 weeks in and my current weird side effect is that my back resembles one of those 3D topographic maps you find in B&B's in the Lake District. Blencathra and Catbells are particularly red and sore

Hi I have taken the decision to have weight loss surgery and reading some of your stories i am nearly crying at how happy some of you are. I have some questions if I may. I will be going private and am considering Turkey. For those that went abroad did you contact the surgeon/hospital directly or did you use a uk health travel company? Did you speak to your GP before speaking to a consultant (if you had done either here or in Turkey) and if you have the procedure done abroad how are the aftercare checkups done once you return to the UK?

Hi everyone, I’m having my sleeve via Tonic with Mr Marco Adamo in central London in two weeks. I start my liver shrinking diet next week (I need to do 7 days). I’m terrified of failing that, TBH! Restriction and hunger send me down a spiral, hence the sleeve. Interestingly, knowing I have a week until the LRD then sleeve, I’ve been eating more than usual this week as it feels like my last chance - did this happen for anyone else?!

I’m 41 and my BMI is about 34/35, so on the lower side, but I’ve been yo-yo-ing for 3 decades now and my health is declining. I’ve developed fatty liver disease and I’m so unfit, despite regular exercise.

I want to be around and healthy for my young child; I want to run alongside as they cycle, rather than huff and puff and send my husband instead; I want to take up less space on transport; I want to feel comfortable.

I really hope I get the right outcome for me!

My gastric sleeve is tomorrow feeling very nervous about reflux and vomiting

I need this change to kickstart healthy living for me and my daughter

Starlightdarkness · 08/01/2023 09:00

I'm 4 weeks post op, no vomiting or heartburn here. I felt very sick straight after surgery but I always do, swiftly dealt with by the nurses with antisickness meds. I was sent home with lansoprazole which I'm taking for 6weeks then review if I need it long term (I think probably not) and good antisickness meds. I haven't needed to touch the antisickness meds or the painkillers they gave me. You'll be fine. I couldn't believe how little pain I was in.

niki26 · 08/01/2023 09:10

I'm 15 weeks post sleeve today - almost 4 1/2 stone gone forever. Feeling fantastic!

So - I was extremely nervous about being sick. I naively thought that as I'm not a 'sicky'person I might be ok (I read that if you aren't prone to travel/morning sickness you probably wouldn't be nauseous afterwards and desperately clung to this information!) but it was bull as I was the one who suffered most out of the 4 of us who were there! I was barely sick - just felt it. I remember thinking am I going to feel sick forever, but two days later and it was gone completely. I caught a sickness bug two weeks post op but I haven't been sick due to food/op etc at all.

Hannah48 · 08/01/2023 10:25

Hi I’m tomorrow too. Naturally feeling a bit nervous about going under, but so ready for this change. All the best x

Starlightdarkness · 08/01/2023 11:58

That's interesting what niki26 has said. I'm a VERY sicky person, always travel sick, can't go on fairground rides, bad smells make me vomit and since my sleeve I'm much much better than I used to be. Struggled brushing my teeth for first few days so if you usually use an electric get a normal one in, otherwise no nausea at all.

Bluetta · 08/01/2023 13:50

Good luck tomorrow @Imogensmumma and @Hannah48 Start of a new healthier version of yourselves. If you are feeling nervous maybe try running through all the reasons you are having the op eg lower risk of illness, feeing better in yourself, fitness, living longer etc whatever your personal reasons are. Be sure to let us know how you get on xxx

Anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 08/01/2023 16:04

I'm not a sicky person but the 36 hours post op were awful for me. I couldn't keep anything down, not even melt in the mouth meds. I was in two different types of IV anti sickness meds and I still vomited regularly and violently. I really, really regretted the surgery for that day and a half. The nurses even commented on the disgusting noises coming out of me. I had to take a bowl to the toilet because I couldn't even go for a wee without triggering the nausea.

And then on day three I was a different person. Ready for food and meds and water. Everything came together and I'm now 9 weeks post op and have not vomited since!

bellac11 · 08/01/2023 16:07

Good luck everyone thats doing it soon

Im still booked in but not sure if I want to change the date as havent been well recently

Also just for people who are fussy like me about protein drinks and artificial sweetners, Im really struggling to find something decent without sweetners but which are low enough in calories, this is for the liquid bit of the recovery

I ordered the amazing grass stuff someone else recommended but because of illness I havent tried it yet.

Today I found a little pouch called Grahams Skyr, it has 135 cals for 15g of Protein which I thought was good value and Im thinking that I could try to water that down for the liquid bit of the diet. Its got no sweetners in it. I found them in Home Bargains.

Hannah48 · 08/01/2023 19:20

Thank You @Bluetta xx

bornonvalentines · 09/01/2023 09:57

Morning Everyone.

Good luck to all those starting 23 with an op. I'm sure you won't regret it. I've lost 4st 5lb since op day , 5 months ago.

What I wasn't prepared for was the nausea. After every meal, including unbelievable burps. My o/w DH has actually decided against an op due to this.

Related question - I can't keep down "pill" vitamins. Does anyone have a recommendation for chewies which meet Bariatric needs? Thanks again Daffodil

Starlightdarkness · 09/01/2023 11:48

There's a powder isn't there? I've seen it advertised on wls insta accounts. Just looked it's bariease and you mix with water. Alex25 gets you 25% off (not my code, someone I follow on insta)
Good luck to those having surgery today!

Starlightdarkness · 09/01/2023 11:49

Also from general experience it's often the iron that makes you feel sick, might be worth separating that out and having it at a different time.

RGinaPhalange · 09/01/2023 13:32

Has anyone had the gastric band rather than the sleeve? In undecided which would be the best option for me

Starlightdarkness · 09/01/2023 14:04

I've had a sleeve but in general the NHS doesn't use gastric bands anymore due to poorer outcomes and higher risks of complications. Check the stats but I think I read somewhere over 50% end up needing to be removed due to complications.
Probably worth booking a consultation and discussing your particular situation as to what's reccomeded.

Dahlia1978 · 09/01/2023 22:30

Good luck to everyone having their surgery this week! I'm down 4st since my op in October x

MrsBungle · 09/01/2023 23:18

I’m flying to Izmir (Godze Kusadasi hospital) on 2nd February. Operation on the 3rd. Anyone else having the op that week?

I’m starting to feel the nerves!

Imogensmumma · 10/01/2023 12:51

Second day post op no nausea at all a bit of heart burn , indigestion.

Half looking forward to going home, half scared to not be attached to drips and lazying around all day.

How are you doing @Hannah48 ?

Sillygrub · 10/01/2023 19:13

@Starlightdarkness I've just found this thread and I'm looking at using the Leeds Nuffield too, so great to hear you've had a good experience and would recommend. Would you mind sharing the cost please?^^

Starlightdarkness · 10/01/2023 19:40

I went through Tonic so all aftercare is included, it was just under £10500 I think. Everyone at Nuffield was lovely, very clean. Really efficient with meds, I felt a bit sick after the anaesthetic and was given meds straight away. Sent home with strong painkillers and antisickness drugs but didnt need either, didnt even need paracetamol. I've been really impressed with the aftercare, daily calls with Debbie the tonic nurse for the first 10days, I'm now on weekly check ins and phone calls with the dietician at every food stage. Happy to answer any specific questions.

Hannah48 · 10/01/2023 22:00

Hi I’m home 2 hours ago with a carrier bag full of medication. I was NHS so in and out in one night. Don’t know why I packed a book, what was I thinking! :-) op went well thanks. I felt pretty battered today but getting stronger one sip at a time. X
