Thank you @WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor and @Twinsandsome . It's so disheartening as I'm still in purée stage and was hoping for dramatic loss. My check in with nurse is on 27 September, almost exactly 2 months post op, so hopefully some weight will shift before then.

Hi @bornonvalentines, you’re not alone! I had a gastric bypass on 13 Jul and after the first few weeks, feel like I’m losing about 1/2 pound a week, if even that much. Considering I’m eating so little, it is baffling to me. I do have faith that it will work eventually but I really did figure I’d feel like some kind of giant, rapidly melting ice cube but nope!

doodlywoodlydingdong · 26/08/2022 18:31

Hey all. I've been following for ages and today I've been approved for a loan , i want to use part of it to get surgery. Or possibly try Saxeda first? I am unsure. I would have to go to Turkey for surgery. And I'm really unsure what to do for the best. I have several serious health issues and my mobility would absolutely be improved with weight loss so oDO want to do it, just hesitant I guess?

Myusername2015 · 26/08/2022 18:54

To give you my perspective on this..I tried saxenda for nearly a year I lost some weight at the beginning but the feeling full sensation reduced considerably over the time..the few times I came off the drug I just regained weight. I realised long term I couldn’t afford £250 pm forever and I was concerned about side effects. So I’ve booked a sleeve next Friday now eeek! My surgeon was great-but in the UK he explained I had very little chance of losing weight permanently as my history shows lots of weight loss over the years but also lots of regain. I do know people who had surgery in turkey I can find who they used if you like.

Yes, I would absurdly like some recommendations of Turkish DRs !

BuenoSucia · 26/08/2022 21:30

I’ve had a similar experience with saxenda - all brilliant at first, then it wore off and I wasn’t paying attention. Upped the dose. Felt I’ll. forgot.

point is I easily spent £500 on it and am no slimmer.

bypass in 7 weeks now, it’s all come around quickly!

doodlywoodlydingdong · 27/08/2022 10:12

I think I might find a good surgeon and just book the bypass for the new year. My eldest sister had the band in 2010 and it worked but then slipped and she regained loads of weight. She had the bypass last year and she's lost it all but I'd say gone too far. She is so thin she looks like a lollipop . I wouldn't want to be like that. I wonder how they know how much to take away?

Anyway, what questions should I be asking the DRs?

BuenoSucia · 27/08/2022 10:19

I had my band in 2005(?) and it did work well initially although I think I’ve put 6.5 of the 8 back on.

tbh I’d be delighted to go “too far” - I am so over being a blob. 😳

McLarenette · 27/08/2022 10:55

What do people with recent sleeve and gastric bypasses have to drink when in a pub or restaurant? Everything except tap water seems to be a problem, either because of alcohol, sugar or carbonation.

Thurst · 27/08/2022 12:01

I’ve had a sleeve and can tolerate alcohol(including sugary cocktails) absolutely fine.

Myusername2015 · 30/08/2022 20:20

Had a cancellation and my sleeve surgery is this Friday…I’m petrified.

Beetr00t · 31/08/2022 23:07

I've read this entire thread over the last few days- phew! Thanks everyone for sharing their experiences. 😊

I've booked a consultation with Tonic to have a Mini Bypass. It will be at Spire in Watford. Tonic seem the cheapest I could find at just under £12k. 😬

I've ummmmed and aaaaahed between the sleeve and bypass for literally years, having done some research I've made my mind up on the mini bypass. I am almost 22 stone and only 5 foot so absolutely huge, my BMI is 57.

Hoping I get approved for the finance now, and as soon as I do, I'm going for it. I'm 36 and absolutely don't want to live like this any longer. I fell ill at home upstairs recently and was unconscious and the paramedics had to call the fire brigade to get me downstairs. Thank god I wasn't awake for that.

Best of luck! Keep us updated! Focus on how you'll feel in 6 months time.

@ScarlettnotOHara yess! Would love it if he did!

@Myusername2015 i get it. I’m feeling scared too and mine isn’t for 6 weeks (that’s come around quickly! 😲). Any time I have a wobble (ha!) I check out all the fb groups to see the success stories and women in their bikinis. Next year, I will be wearing a bikini!

JudgeRindersMinder · 02/09/2022 10:06

Hi everyone, I’ve not been on this thread yet (was on the previous one). I’m 10 months out from my sleeve now -can’t believe it’s as long as that!- and I’m now 12 stones lighter!

Life is really good these days.
This morning I put on a pair of size 16 jeans which fit like a glove-I’ve not some that in the best part of 30 years!
We’re renovating our house just now and I’m up and down ladders doing stuff that there’s no way I’d have been able to do a year ago!

Healthwise it’s brilliant, my BP is now consistently 120/80, again for the first time in about 30 years. I’m off the antidepressants I’d been on for 19 years-I guess the depression was linked more to my weight than I was prepared to admit.

Foodwise, it’s great. I’ve made decisions to just not eat certain foods like bread and fried foods. Bread was always a downfall but I was never really one for junk/fast foods, but I’m eating whatever I like, just small portions.

Absolutely no regrets-I feel I’ve got a life for the first time in years!

niki26 · 02/09/2022 10:08

@JudgeRindersMinder that's fantastic! And reassuring to hear as my sleeve surgery is on 24th September!

JudgeRindersMinder · 02/09/2022 10:58

@niki26 thank you. I hope your surgery goes well and you have a great recovery!

Mydoghealsmyheart · 04/09/2022 12:31

I’m contemplating getting a gastric band if (or when!) I can save the money up given this cost of living crisis. My reason for the band is that it’s reversible as I’m terrified of complications and then not being able to do anything about it.

BuenoSucia · 04/09/2022 14:01

Don’t get the band! I had one in 2005(?) and it’s enforced bulimia. I mean yeh, I initially lost 8 stone - but my hair fell out and I literally didn’t keep anything down for 6 weeks.

like you, I chose that option because back then, it was the only option which was reversible without bits of you ending up in the hospital incinerator.

full cycle 6 stone back and in 6 weeks I’m getting the bypass which no longer cuts bits out and in theory is reversible.

the band really isn’t the best choice - plenty of info out there in fb land.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 04/09/2022 16:41

I’m not on Facebook so haven’t seen anything about the band. I didn’t realise the bypass is reversible. Don’t get me wrong, if I go down the route of bariatric surgery I want to be committed to the process but I’m just going terrified that, if there are complications, you’ve got nowhere to go if a part of your digestive system has been removed. I’m just desperate to do something but I want, like everyone, for it to be a success.

BuntyCollocks · 05/09/2022 22:20

I had a mini bypass which is reversible @Mydoghealsmyheart

could not recommend it more. 28 weeks down, 6st 6 gone for good

Beetr00t · 06/09/2022 12:06

@BuntyCollocks that's what I want- got consultation this week. How has it been for you please?

BuntyCollocks · 06/09/2022 12:25

@Beetr00t absolutely amazing. I love my mini. I can eat pretty much anything (not a lot of melted cheese though so baked Camembert is a distant memory!), I’ve been on an all inclusive cruise, I’ve drank and I’m still losing. I wish I’d done it years ago. It’s given me my life back.

BuntyCollocks · 06/09/2022 12:26

This is from 1 week post op compared to 3 weeks ago.

McLarenette · 06/09/2022 16:31

You look amazing, Bunty!

I had my follow up consultation with my surgeon yesterday after my gastric bypass op, it continues to go really well. I find I’m still trying to work out when I’m full because I don’t get cues any more, and stuff that’s too high in sugar makes me feel sick for about an hour. Higher fat things seem more easily tolerated but obviously I’m not looking to make that part of my regular diet anyway.

It continues to be amazing to me not to be thinking about food nearly all the time. It is peaceful.
