Hello & Welcome

September has flown by and now October is upon us! There's a definite autumnal chill in the air and this change in seasons is a natural transition that we echo in our day-to-day lives'. I for one look forward to cosy nights by the fire and prepping for the coming festive season. .

With 86 days until Christmas there's plenty of time to svelte up for the Christmas holidays. A part of my Christmas prep includes dropping a few extra lbs ‘to make room’ for a little foody extravagance… and a Baileys or two 😬

Carrying on from September Thread, this is a space for those of us who enjoy healthy eating, exercising and feeling motivated to reach (or maintain) a healthy weight/bmi. The members of these threads are inspirational, supportive and happy to share their progress (the ups and the downs).

We all know that if we eat right, get outside & move more your mental health will reap the rewards. Better mental health = better choices. It becomes a healthy cycle.

There are so many enjoyable lifestyle options out there without the need to resort to extreme measures. Whatever way you choose, it needs to be enjoyable & sustainable for the long term. This is a long term commitment rather than a quick fix. Personally, I rarely drink alcohol and keep sugar to a minimum. I try to not overload on carbs etc, include a protein source with most meals and aim to glug enough water. I exercise by doing walking vids & strength sessions with light weighs.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. Nonetheless this thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding. We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. I’ve weighed daily at times and weekly at other times. Do what works for you.

There is no shaming, competition or harsh words to be found on these threads. We are in this together.

Jump right in! If you’re not too shy, post a bit about yourself 😊. How do you plan to do it? What do you want to achieve? What excites you about your future self? Together, we can create a whole new you!

You’ll be glad you got on board this time next month 😊

I will add links on my next post.

OMG @SunshineCake1 - really hope all is OK with your DD. Is she far away at Uni? more stress and worry for you, and you are probably far away too.

buzzofthebumblebee · 06/10/2021 09:19

Yea! Well done on the loss @Youdoyoutoday. And it will only be a nervous wee needed, not a real one, so you'll be distracted enough and no accidents speaking from experience

Stayed the same at 12 7 today. But I feel positive and not seeing it as a defeat. The slice of cake and prosecco at the weekend obvs made a huge difference Wink.

SunshineCake1 · 06/10/2021 09:52

With being ill they've told her she is very dehydrated so it doesn't sound serious. She'll miss uni today, and missed yesterday, but hopefully she'll be better soon. Must admit didn't sleep well and I'm already stressed out.

SunshineCake1 · 06/10/2021 09:52

She's 2.5-3 hours away.

SunshineCake1 · 06/10/2021 09:52

And I'm up another pound.

TheRealHousewife · 06/10/2021 12:03

Good Morning Everyone

A warm welcome @Jduh … you’ve come to the right place 😊 We’ll look after you. I see @Graphista and others have given you some fab advice ! 👍

@SunshineCake1 wishing your dd a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

2.3lb gain since last Wednesday. No surprise there as I know the pain meds affect my water weight. Headache lifted so not taking tabs, gain should be soon gone 😬

Menu
Meal 1 - Spicy chicken soup (last of the batch.)
Meal 2 - large Mediterranean omelette & salad; apple & small spoon of peanut butter.
Water water water.

Hi ladies! Hope you're all ok. I'm Much better week this week, probably because we've not left the house at all apart from for my runs...why am I such a home-body?!?

I missed the post about the new October thread so will catch up on messages in a mo.

Anyway, I've lost another kg in a week. So happy as I started off losing barely anything so I think last 2 week's loss has really motivated me to say no to naughty food. Never managed to diet successfully in the past so this has really given me a boost!

SW: 3rd Sept - 85.5kg
LW: 29 Sept - 84.2kg
CW - 83kg
GW- 68kg

Ladies...i wanted some opinions on coke zero too. This is currently my "treat" as it's sweet but with no cal's or sugar but should I be avoiding? And what about coffees? I have several cups of decaf coffee with milk but no sugar a day...will this really add up? I don't track how much milk I'm adding to each coffee (for calorie counting) as it's such a faff

Coffeehouse22 · 06/10/2021 12:17

@SunshineCake1 - you're having such a tough time...I'm so sorry! Hope your dd makes a speedy recovery. xx

SunshineCake1 · 06/10/2021 12:18

I don't drink coffee but have given up all cola as I feel it is just evil stuff. I drink sparkling water, lemonade maybe once a week and occasionally dh buys me the fridjj drinks.

I've just smacked my head against the door frame so sitting still for now.

Youdoyoutoday · 06/10/2021 14:26

@Coffeehouse22 Beware of liquid calories, it's not just all booze and full fat coke that adds up! You'd be surprised by how much milk goes into a coffee so you would need to count it in your daily calorie intake.
I measured my milk once and it was about 100ml that I was putting in so at 65cal per 100ml, it adds up. 5 cups of coffee would be 325 calories. That for me is about a quarter of my daily calories, I try to stick to 1200 as day.

As for coke zero I might have a can a day with lunch but I've tried to cut that out for water instead. I find if I stay off it, I'm less bloated.

Crazzzycat · 06/10/2021 14:28

@Coffeehouse22, I personally try to avoid having too much caffeine, as caffeine affects how fast food moves through your stomach. That means that caffeine can result in you feeling hungry much quicker than you might have done if you had not had a caffeinated drink.

I avoid artificial sweeteners for the same reason, i.e. they have been shown to increase appetite, particularly cravings for sweet things. But everyone is different, so if you don’t notice that much of an increase in appetite or sugar cravings, it should be ok to continue having these things in moderation! E.g. I’ve cut down caffeine, but still have a couple of cups of tea in the morning. No point being a martyr if you enjoy that kind of thing 😄

Coffeehouse22 · 06/10/2021 15:50

Thanks ladies. Will be careful with the coffees as I have about 4 a day at the moment Grin coke zero I've not noticed if that gives me more sugar cravings or makes me hungrier so I'll keep an eye on that.

@SunshineCake1 - poor you! One thing after another at the moment huh. Hope you are resting Flowers

Graphista · 06/10/2021 16:01

Post didn't post grr

Jduh you're welcome I cannot advise on sleep as I'm a chronic insomniac and my sleep pattern is awful!

I cross stitch and that's one way to keep mind and hands occupied away from eating! Plus need to keep hands clean or the work gets grubby!

My downfall is crisps! Pringles large tube, share bag of doritos ? Easy!

Losing weight is also saving me money plus I also used to be bad for takeaways but soon as lockdown hit our local ones went crap with long delivery times and poor quality so I've not had a takeaway at all in 14 months now! Saved me a fortune!

That goal is a good one it's approx 5% for you too which is when nhs and others say you/your health notices a difference.

I'd always had low bp and it started creeping up (it has to be monitored for meds I'm on) and I'll be honest that was the kick I needed.

I've always been relatively health conscious - vegetarian, almost teetotal (very rarely drink) non smoker etc but was complacent on the food quantities and snacking side.

@SunshineCake1 crikey! Hope dd is ok? She needs to drink more clearly and look after herself. That said mine has freshers flu and is feeling kinda grotty herself.

@Youdoyoutoday yes when I lost weight before it equated to half dds weight at the time and I was like "no wonder I felt permanently knackered"

@Coffeehouse22 I'm pretty much caffeine free these days for the insomnia. But I used to drink "normal" tea when losing weight and a ww tip is to measure out your daily allowance at start of day or I have one of these

www.wilko.com/wilko-mini-measure-measuring-tool/p/0435793?gclid=CjwKCAjwkvWKBhB4EiwA-GHjFsZvlSY99SPmRMCTpKOxxa03jg7yBLRmwMoQcJplBsPXpLu8q-UoxoCJHEQAvDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Which is handy for small amounts of liquid

Beware of liquid calories

Definitely!

The ww meetings where the leader raised this (which she did regularly as a lot of people are unaware/forget)

There were many faces when she said how many cals/points are in a medium caramel latte!

I was guilty of this myself then and just before this time too. I was "treating" myself (but daily!) to full sugar fizzy and hot choc with whipped cream! Tons of cals!

Even sugar free my fizzy is 13 cals a can and actimel is 27 cals and that's fat free and 3 mouthfuls!

@Crazzzycat that's interesting re caffeine and hunger. Agree on sweeteners too but I do find them useful at times

SunshineCake1 · 06/10/2021 16:47

Thank you @Coffeehouse22 and @Graphista. Dd says she is feeling better and her boyfriend is going over to help. My head really hurts when I touch it so I'm not doing that again. Have a lump and a red mark. Went out for a five minute walk. Did me the world of good to be out but felt a big deal. I feel I've lost nearly two months of my life in bed! Ddog was very excited that mummy was walking with her and barely looked back when I turned to go back home and she carried on with daddy Grin.

buzzofthebumblebee · 06/10/2021 17:31

You really do need wrapping up in cotton wool don't you Sunshine? glad you got out for a walk, even if only short. Baby steps and all that.

I meant to go running today. Glued to my desk. Shame, as looks like a beautiful day. Tomorrow hopefully.

SunshineCake1 · 06/10/2021 17:48

I have been accident prone so much. It is ridiculous @buzzofthebumblebee.

Graphista · 06/10/2021 18:40

I think she needs wrapping in bubble wrap! You sound like my dd! Though her accidents are due to her disability which affects her balance, co-ordination and depth perception etc but we didn't know this till she were nearly 12 so we ribbed her a lot about the daft accidents she had until then it was honestly like she could fall over her own shadow!

Glad your dd doing better. I need to consciously drink more than I would naturally I honestly forget a lot of the time

Please be more careful though.

It may be your depth/distance perception has been affected too. When we are ill with cold/flu type things being dehydrated/having a fever can affect the size/shape of our eyeballs and this can mess up things like depth perception. I've had a few bumps and bruises this last few weeks too cos of this, I've also had times when even having my glasses on I couldn't read stuff!

CumbrianExile · 06/10/2021 18:44

Glad your DD is ok @SunshineCake1 and I hope the bump to your head heals quickly!

Quick moving thread and lots of good advise for me to pick up, so thank you. I have been busy with work and the DC so haven't posted too much but I am lurking and reading and taking on the tips.

I agree with those who suggest losing slowly, this is my plan this time. I have a friend who is constantly on Cambridge, losing lots very quickly and then putting it back on. As tempted as I am by the quick loss I am not sure I could manage such a small amount of calories!

Not a massive soup maker, usually I buy the pre chopped soup mixes, but they never seem to turn out well. But my old slimming world leader was recommending a Cauliflower Cheese Soup so I thought I would give it a go, and we had a fair bit of green veg that needed using. So I made two different pans and I have to say both are delicious. Even DH has complimented both soups and he is generally quite picky Grin

Evening picker here too - I also have gotten some lower calorie picky bits and have started going to bed earlier. It is helping me get more sleep which is also a good thing!

SunshineCake1 · 06/10/2021 20:07

I definitely feel off. Years ago I fell when carrying baby DS out of the car and cracked a rib. The following week I gave myself concussion. Nine months later I couldn't work out how to move my right leg then the following day couldn't work out how to move to get out of bed. Turned out I'd been walking around since the concussion with my neck out of alignment . I then concussed myself the following week. So many other things come to mind but I'm definitely more wobbly lately.

Head still hurts. Have a lump and a red mark. I got into bed at seven to try and limit the potential for more trouble.

I am going for an eye test as soon as fit to go out. I knew a year ago my eyes had changed but couldn't face the £600 for glasses and they said I was borderline for needing new ones. They've got worse since.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up with near enough a stone on by the time I'm allowed to run again. Makes me feel rubbish but I just don't feel up to being good lately.

Tomorrow I get to leave the house properly and go for blood tests. First time out in weeks!

Graphista · 06/10/2021 23:26

@CumbrianExile crash diets - as your friend keeps doing not only don't work in terms of sustained and maintained weight loss they are plain dangerous! They mess with your metabolism, can also put strain on heart and other organs. Frankly "selling" them should be criminalised

The trick to a good soup is a good flavour base. The vast majority of the time I start off by sautéing off 2-3 sticks of celery diced, 2 large handfuls frozen diced onion (love this product! As it's just me here I mostly don't use much onion but with having frozen in I can use it much more often and don't have to worry about it going off if I don't fancy it for a few days as I would with fresh), 2-3 tablespoons lazy garlic (although I sometimes have fresh in)

Also some dried herbs and spices, if spices add them at the end of sautéing off the onions etc above

Good well seasoned stock - this is the usual mistake people make, using like 1 stock cube for 3 pints of stock and then wonder why their soup is bland!

Also add things that add depth of flavour - mustard, marmite, Henderson's relish, sweet chilli sauce, tomato purée, soy sauce...

Experiment - you'll find your way

@SunshineCake1 £600 for glasses are they made of diamonds?! Do you have specially tricky eyesight in some way?

Well I had a proper blowout at ask Italian but it was all I had today and I had water to drink.

WOW = 12 stone 10.5lbs and that's after eating.

1/4 lb on overall from last week - I'm taking that an running away!

That's a win as far as I'm concerned

Also nsv - size 20 M&S jeans are now visibly too big for me, size 18's are about right and I think I could've actually squeezed into a 16, but they wouldn't have looked great. Again - taking it and running away! Fast Grin

Measured too:

1/2 inch off bust
Inch each off waist and hips

I'm running a weight losers marathon here! Grin

SunshineCake1 · 07/10/2021 07:52

It was £600 for two pairs and yes I had extras. Wouldn't bother next time.

Not leaving house. Woke up to a text cancelling my appointment as they have no blood test bottles. I'm not happy as I want to know what is going on as I still feel so off. I planned to stop at the shop as well for first time in eight weeks Sad. And my head still hurts. [fed up].

Well done on all your achievements and wins @Graphista.

TheRealHousewife · 07/10/2021 08:36

Good Morning Everyone

@Coffeehouse22 nice steady lose! In regards to zero calorie drinks if they are not affecting you losing they might be ok. Recently I read a piece online that suggested that our hormone receptors still react to the sweet taste and the effect was similar to having real sugar and affect blood sugars/insulin/belly fat etc. I’ve had a quick look this morning but can’t find it. If I come across it I’ll post it for you.

@buzzofthebumblebee fingers crossed you get out for your run today, sun is shining ☀️

@CumbrianExile great you’ve joined the soup brigade 🍲 Nothing finer than home made soup. No additives and full of the good stuff.

@SunshineCake1 how disappointing for you! Pleased to read dd on the mend.

@Graphista well done on significantly sizing down on your jeans and measurements 👍👏🥇

OAN just seen Plastic Elvis on Breakfast TV 🤣. It was the comedian Tim Vine dressed up in a shiny black skin tight body suit & Elvis wig. Should have come with a viewer warning. Did anyone else see it?

Menu
Meal 1 - Halloumi, kale & butter bean stir fry.
Meal 2 - Fish, sweet corn, peas, carrots and sweet potato.
Apple & peanut butter. Water! Didn’t get enough in yesterday!

I just tried a little walk to hopefully meet dh and our dog on the way back. Could have cried when they turned into the field. Came home and had discomfort on the way back. Looks like I won't be shopping today. I actually have tears in my eyes which is ridiculous but after not getting my tests, therefore longer to wait to know what it wrong, weight going on, not being able to run and aching on walking it is all making me fed up.
