Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 4

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/08/2021 09:08

Hi to all regulars and lurkers!

Here's the 4th thread, based on the ideas in Dr Andrew Jenkinson's book. We've seen some amazing losses on these threads, and the benefits for me can be summed up as 'no counting, no starving'.
We don't count calories, and if we're hungry we eat. We're focused on quality.

General eating principles:

No sugar
No wheat (which reduces unhealthy carbs)
No ultra processed foods, and in particular no processed/ultra refined oils
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

His principles also include trying to sleep more and reduce stress, and take regular (moderate) exercise.

If any of this sounds promising, please feel free to ask questions and come and join in!

Hi all, when you have plateaued, how long has it lasted? I enjoy this woe and I'm trying to be patient but I would like to see a downward shift on the scales again.

Words · 08/11/2021 13:55

@Styletryle : don't panic!

Could the three pounds be hormonally-related?

Cut down a bit on the white carbs going forward. Jenkinson recommends having fruit later in the day and just two portions if possible. Also Banana and satsuma are both quite sweet. How about berries instead? Blueberries possibly? Can you have something other than tinned soup at lunch time?

I make up a vat of soup every Sunday for lunch in the week. I think there's around 9 litres of the stuff. At the moment I chuck in one onion, 3 leeks, 6 carrots, one butternut squash, 4 stock cubes (if I don't have any real stock). It takes about 15 mins to wash and chop the veg so no time at all for si many meals. Once cooked I blitz it so it has a purée consistency.

A recipe resource would be great @theleadbetterlife.

Someone asked about how long on the plateau. I reckon a couple of months for me.

Aria999 · 08/11/2021 19:22

Re plateaux, my initial loss was 4lbs then it's been about another 2lbs off, about once every 2 months.

The last of those is only in the last couple of days though so it may be too early to tell!

If it's for real then I have now lost 9lbs in total.

I am finding also that my weight is very consistent during the plateau. The exact same every single day more or less.

TheLeadbetterLife · 08/11/2021 19:57

I lost a kilo a week for two months or so, then I was on a plateau for about three months. That shifted down by another two kilos when I started focussing on getting more sleep and exercise.

Now I’m on another plateau, but no sign of any weight regain thankfully, even though I’ve had a lot of meals out and a carb-heavy weekend away in that time. I’ve been at this weight for about two months.

I’m trying to lose another 2-3 kilos. I’m going to cut back on dairy and cured meats a bit (been eating way too much cheese and somewhat too much choriço I think). I’m also lengthening my daily fasts to 18 hours and doing a weekly 24 hour fast in the hope of burning a bit more fat.

It’s hard now the weather has gone cold.

TheLeadbetterLife · 08/11/2021 22:09

Right, I've made an account on Copy Me That, in the hope that we can make a group recipe collection: www.copymethat.com

It's a free website / app, so if other members here want to create an account, let's see if I can add you to the recipe circle. I think that means that we can add each other's recipes, but I'm not sure.

The account I've created is called Why We Cook Too Much, and I've made it public, so it should be searchable on the site.

If someone could create an account and let me know the profile name, I'll experiment with adding you to my recipe circle and see what that actually does.

Hope that makes sense!

Aria999 · 08/11/2021 23:16

@Styletryle possibly a long shot but some of us have experienced constipation at the start of this - could your 3 lbs be... backed-up-ness?

koalaroobear · 09/11/2021 06:45

@TheLeadbetterLife I have followed under the same username as here, never used that site before, what a great idea!

Words · 09/11/2021 07:09

I've created an account and added the oatcake recipe. Brilliant idea Leadbetter, thank you!

Words · 09/11/2021 07:23

Followed the group account also. Will it allow multiple accounts I wonder?

Words · 09/11/2021 07:33

Oh ? It copies recipes to my account rather than the group one I'm following. Any ideas how to add a recipe to the group account?

TheLeadbetterLife · 09/11/2021 09:05

I’m not sure, I’m trying to work out how to create a group. I’ve added you both to my circle, but I can’t see your recipes - I think you have to make your recipes public in settings.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 09/11/2021 09:54

Is this the right group?

Yes that's the on Dr.

I've made my recipes public now, so it's appeared on the app, but not in our group...

Cakey46 · 09/11/2021 10:27

Thanks all for your experience of plateaus. I knew I had to be patient but blimey!
Still a WOE is for life, not just for (pre) christmas.

TheLeadbetterLife · 09/11/2021 10:35

Well the group is really just my profile, I don't know if it's possible to make a true group.

You can filter the community recipes by people you follow though, so maybe that will be enough to share our recipes, if we all follow each other and make our recipes public in settings. We can also add each others' recipes to our own collection.

This was the best of the free recipe book apps, so maybe we see how it goes?

Aria999 · 09/11/2021 14:22

@Cakey46 yes it's slow.

On the other hand every time your weight set point drops, it's that your body has (maybe permanently) changed its default size and shape for the better, which I find exciting!

Words · 09/11/2021 18:11

I've just changed my setting to include'sharing with my circle' so wondering if @pseudobadger and @koalaroobear can see what I have shared?

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 09/11/2021 18:33

I can see the oatcakes?

koalaroobear · 09/11/2021 18:53

I can see the recipes in your profile area 😊
