Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 4

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/08/2021 09:08

Hi to all regulars and lurkers!

Here's the 4th thread, based on the ideas in Dr Andrew Jenkinson's book. We've seen some amazing losses on these threads, and the benefits for me can be summed up as 'no counting, no starving'.
We don't count calories, and if we're hungry we eat. We're focused on quality.

General eating principles:

No sugar
No wheat (which reduces unhealthy carbs)
No ultra processed foods, and in particular no processed/ultra refined oils
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

His principles also include trying to sleep more and reduce stress, and take regular (moderate) exercise.

If any of this sounds promising, please feel free to ask questions and come and join in!

@VinoBianca this is my favorite galette recipe. I use bacon instead of ham. You can skip the maple syrup if you like but it's not much and it does go well with the other flavors

Thank you both @samthebordercollie @Aria999 !

VinoBianca · 31/10/2021 20:56

Ooh one more question @samthebordercollie does the batter keep in the fridge for a bit?

@VinoBianca

Ooh one more question *@samthebordercollie* does the batter keep in the fridge for a bit?
Im sure a day or even 2 would be fine. Wha. I make pizza dough I leave it 4 days in the fridge for best results - (completely off plan I know but one pizza every fortnight with no other bread is ok I think!)
VinoBianca · 31/10/2021 21:19

@samthebordercollie all I will be eating is galette! Thank you Thanks

Aria999 · 01/11/2021 00:52

Ketosis was not my intention so I have just had a big bowl of pasta.

So... sleepy... it's only 8:50!

Words · 01/11/2021 06:04

Morning everyone! I am up today at even sillier o'clock than usual as I haven't adjusted to the clock change yet.

Thanks for the galette recipes! Yummy.

Yesterday I noticed that the fatty lump I've had on my leg for years has gone completely. Was checked out, completely harmless. It's like the sort of thing elderly dogs get. Anyway, it's gorn!

Also, last evening I had the log fire lit and a good book on the go and all super cosy- so I was compelled to make myself some hot chocolate using the special Spanish stuff. ( Simon Coll if anyone interested) but MY was it sweet! I had perhaps a quarter of the amount of choc to milk I used to have. Taste buds have definitely been re trained.

Finally, as we are in hearty soup season, two cook book recommendations. The Covent Garden one has seem really good, simple staples, the Magic one has some delicious ideas - some out of the ordinary, but not so out there as to be off putting.

@Words I was up at 6H30 to go out for a 17km run with a friend. It's a bank holiday here today. Following a very good weigh in Friday when I was 59kgs I've put on 1.3kgs over the weekend. I hope it's just water retention as I was doing really well Blush

Crumpledandworn · 01/11/2021 12:15

Thanks for all the really helpful tips & recipes on here. Can I check a couple of things? Are pulses ok & what about root veg? Craving lentil & root veg stew!

Words · 01/11/2021 12:50

Pulses and root veg definitely ok ! Smile

Hello, please can I join you? I'm about a third of the way through the book but had a look ahead at the food recommendations and have been trying to eat properly for the last few days. Looks really good so far, I'm a yo-yo dieter who has tried ALL the diets so hoping this WOE will work for me.

Arcadia · 01/11/2021 16:20

Hi @Styletryle I find that using up dinner leftovers for my lunches is better than trying to come up with lunch ideas, and luckily have access to a fridge and a microwave at work.

MadameLeotta · 01/11/2021 19:17

Interesting article @Words, gut microbiome seems to be increasingly important, I see it being mentioned everywhere at the moment!

samthebordercollie · 01/11/2021 19:59

@MadameLeotta

Interesting article *@Words*, gut microbiome seems to be increasingly important, I see it being mentioned everywhere at the moment!
Yes the microbiome is really important. The best way to keep it healthy is to eat as many different plant foods as possible. As Robert Lustig says in his latest book Metabolic (which I really recommend), you should eat to "protect your liver and feed your gut."
Aria999 · 02/11/2021 02:05

Hi and welcome @Winecheesesleep !

Great username!

Mrsbrownsbuoys · 02/11/2021 03:02

Hi, just seen this thread recommended on another thread and thought I'd have a look. I'm 2 stone overweight and unhappy but know that dieting won't help in the long run, as I just put it all back on eventually and more.

I'll have a look at the book. I think I eat mainly out of boredom but also as an emotional prop. I'm addicted to sweet things and due to chronic pain don't get much exercise. I really do need to address this as I hate the way I look.

I'll read through the whole thread in the morning.

Mrsbrownsbuoys · 02/11/2021 03:07

Sorry, forgot to add, this is what I typically eat in a day.

Weetabix with 1/2 tsp sugar and milk
3 milky coffees
Toasted sandwich for lunch with brie
Potato wedges and peas or salad with quiche/hm stew/hm lasagne
1 small bar chocolate
15 grapes
5 biscuits
3 mugs of tea with a little milk and 1/2 tsp sugar

I don't drink alcohol at all.

I'm post menopausal and seem to be putting weight on where before I would remain the same more or less.

Words · 02/11/2021 06:08

Welcome @Mrsbrownsbuoys and another welcome to @Winecheesesleep !

Ask any questions you want and someone will be able to help I am sure.

As you'll have seen the emphasis is on cutting out wheat, ( so no bread or pasta as a rule but some of us manage with a small amount asa treat) .

Cut out sugar ( but again some manage with a little as a treat - the trick is not to let it get out of hand, which is the hard bit, so some find it easier just not to eat it, and have found that the palate re trains itself over time.)

No ultra processed foods of any kind and no veg oils apart from extra virgin olive oil. Cook from scratch , using fresh ingredients as much as you possibly can. For me this is the golden rule from which everything else flows.

The book explains the science behind this way of eating, and lots of us are finding it really works for us.

A typical day for me would be:

Breakfast : Don't always have it, but if so full fat Greek yoghurt ( don't buy low fat anything. Full of sugar - I make my own coz I enjoy it ) with berries or a veg smoothie ( not everyone's cup of tea granted ) Flax seed sprinkled on / in either of these is good as it's full of fibre and other good stuff. Several gallons black coffee

Lunch: Salad with cheese, cold meat, eggs ( hard boiled or omelette or a frittata ) or home made soup

Dinner: meat or fish with lots of veg including leafy greens and a few potatoes, or maybe a home made casserole of some kind, Greek yoghurt again for pud, or cheese and home made oatcakes ( home made as most contain veg oil) Then , more often than I should, I have two or three squares of dark chocolate in bed whilst reading or watching rubbish on my iPad.

Generally I don't snack, but an apple and cheese usually hits the spot if I am genuinely hungry, I've recently taken up tea drinking and unlike with coffee, I take that with milk, which fills me up a bit, and often find that is a good distraction from mindless snacking, as is the ritual of making it. ( I have my own little yellow teapot.)

My triggers for over eating are: tiredness, boredom, stress and plain, simple inattention. Last night for example, I started messi g on the internet whilst eating ( in spite of resolving not to) and found I had eaten far more than I actually needed to satisfy my appetite.

I conveniently 'forget' that I am smaller than I was, and so need toadjust my portions accordingly.

Portion control has always been my Achilles heel. Or one of them...

Finding it hard going this year adjusting to the clock change. My bodyclock is still running on BST. As are my cats, unfortunately!

Winecheesesleep · 02/11/2021 09:39

Thanks for the welcomes! I weighed myself this morning and have put a pound on which isn't a great start but I still haven't finished the book yet so perhaps I'm not doing it correctly. I only started on Friday I think.

We ate out a lot over the weekend which I thought I'd handled well but perhaps not. Will finish the book and keep going!

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 02/11/2021 21:23

I've tried this woe for 3 days and already feel better (or just highly motivated) I have a couple of questions though - are Ryvita OK? I had 3 with cottage cheese and roasted salmon with a squeeze of lemon and a small salad, lovely. And are blueberries allowed or are they too sugary?

Aria999 · 02/11/2021 21:41

I think ryvita are better than bread but not perfect. I believe rye flour is better than wheat flour but ryvita also contain wheat flour, and sugar.

I expect they are ok in moderation. As with everything, to some extent you need to experiment and see what works for you personally. I still eat pasta at least once a week with generally no ill effects.

Aria999 · 02/11/2021 21:57

For fruit he says try to limit it to 2 portions a day and try not to have it for breakfast (I often ignore the latter advice but I have it with Greek yoghurt which should improve the glycemic load)
