Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 2

Shiny new thread to continue on with! I hope everyone keeps going.

For any newbies, this thread is based on a book by Dr Andrew Jenkinson. The main principles are to cut out sugar, wheat and ultra-processed foods, while eating fresh natural ingredients. It works!

I’ve felt hungover all day (but haven’t drank!) - really dehydrated and an upset stomach and soooo tired. I’ve just finished work and am settling down with a hot water bottle Grin Feel like I’ve eaten more than usual today but all healthy stuff and importantly no wheat or sugar has passed my lips. After doing well for over a month I feel like I’m starting from scratch after my week off the rails. Although I had a few false starts when I gave up drinking so I’m treating it as a leaning experience and it’ll hopefully stop me feeling like I’m missing out next time I’m tempted!

Tiredandbored · 24/05/2021 18:40

Isn't it worrying how crappy we feel after eating crap food - more evidence it can't be doing us any good! I suspect the better we eat the worse we feel after eating crap. I suppose in a way it's a good thing as it's more motivation to eat well and not succumb to the temptation to eat the stodge.

I've had a reasonably good day today - had salad for dinner this eve which was lots of different raw vegetables, some fruit and boiled eggs. The kids and DH had crusty bread with theirs, but I didn't. I did have a squirt of salad cream on my eggs though, but I'm ok with that.

HighlandCowbag · 24/05/2021 19:21

It's definitely a concern Tired, I felt awful after my chinese last week, took 48 hours to feel better again. And even though I ate Indian food on Saturday night and far too much to drink, apart from feeling tired I felt OK yesterday. But the restaurant is a good one so presume uses better ingredients than a shitty deliveroo chinese.

Had a good day today. Scrambled eggs with ham for lunch then have just had rainbow trout, new potatoes and veg for tea. May have some strawberries and cream later if I fancy it.

Tinkling · 24/05/2021 19:29

I can’t believe how horrendous I feel after junk. It never used to affect me when I was younger.

I had dark chocolate with raspberry and roasted hazelnuts earlier instead of eating a proper meal because I was busy. It was lush but I felt really sick after.

Then I had my JP stuffed with broccoli and cheese... and added chorizo. It was amazing.

Dinner ended up being a kebab. I had a chicken shish and loads of salad. The chicken is marinated in oil and there is oil in the garlic sauce and neither will be EVOO, but it’s not a bad meal at all. DH wanted it and I let him because I feel bad for him - he had the snip today!

Tiredandbored · 24/05/2021 19:31

Oh dear, your DH definitely deserves the meal of his choice after that! 😂

Sounds like it was reasonably good though, pretty much on plan.

Tiredandbored · 24/05/2021 19:34

I know I've mentioned this before, but I'm definitely seeing a significant drop in my appetite. I used to always get the munchies in the evening time and would eat all sorts of rubbish sitting watching TV, but now I'm not getting the same urge to eat and either don't bother with anything in the evening or just get something small as a taste-satisfier rather than hunger-satisfier... If that makes sense! 😁

HighlandCowbag · 24/05/2021 19:47

I think a kebab is definitely in order for DH Tinkling, poor lad.

Tired I am the same. Took a couple of weeks but I don't get hungry until about 1pm now despite not having breakfast. And that danger time of picking off kids plates has disappeared now. I always have fruit and yoghurt in the fridge for a pudding but very rarely bother. I did pick up a bar of dark chocolate this afternoon and its in the fridge for emergency use. Which usually happens Friday night after beer funnily enough. But 1 small bar of chocolate on a friday is much better than how I was eating before.

Gensola · 25/05/2021 08:52

Hello! I have just read the book and then your first thread and then this thread Grin
Please can I join?
I’m 35 and had a severe stomach problem in 2014 which caused me to lose 2.5 stone and drop to a dangerously low weight. I had surgery and recovered to full health but the starvation period ruined my metabolism and I then piled on 20kg even though I wasn’t eating any differently to before.
I am now 64kg and 5 ft 2 so hovering around the top of a healthy BMI/just over the line into overweight after losing 6kg on the fast800 diet last summer and keeping it off - I was well into the overweight range at BMI 28ish when I started fasting.
My current goal is health first, my body has been through a lot, and I want a baby so I want to maximise my health and get to a BMI of 22-23 which is optimal for IVF. I’d like to lose another 4-6kg as my happy weight was always 55-59kg.
I find this way of eating quite compatible with the things I learned on fast800, I have maintained that weight loss largely by continuing with a low carb Mediterranean diet, cutting out processed food etc .
What is new to me here is the vegetable oil and omega stuff. Also nice to be allowed rice and potatoes as fast800 doesn’t really allow those.

Tinkling · 25/05/2021 09:34

Welcome Gensola and congratulations on your weight loss.

I love the fast800 recipes but my body just can’t cope without carbs so I’ve been unable to follow it. It’s what drew me to those WOE. Are you still following it now with stalled weight loss?

Gensola · 25/05/2021 09:50

Hi Tinkling, I’m not following it any more really, I only did it for about 8 weeks in summer 2020. I’ve since kept the weight off by eating mainly low carb Mediterranean diet though I’ve had plenty of days off and wine!!

Rankellior · 25/05/2021 10:57

I’m going to join too if that’s ok? I have long since thought that on/off dieting has screwed my metabolism and now I seem stuck at a certain weight despite exercising a lot and not eating excessively (although quality questionable)
Low carb has been really successful for me in the past until I start introducing carbs again so I like the idea of some carbs. Particularly keen to hear any experiences of people who cycle (or run) fairly long distances regularly (2 hours plus) and how they manage with lower carbs? That’s always been my concern since I got into cycling a few years back and used carbs for fuel.

samthebordercollie · 25/05/2021 11:08

@Rankellior welcome to the thread! I'm a long distance runner (I also cycle and swim twice a week) and I run every morning around 10 miles fasted. I eat very few carbs, instead of pasta, rice, potatoes with my evening meal it is always green salad or green veg. I've never had an issue with racing either - I physically can't digest high carbs so don't eat as I should much as I should before a marathon, but it has never had an adverse effect on performance. I think the fact of being used to running fasted also helps. Same goes for cycling. I feel worse if I eat before exercise as sometimes get the dreaded sugar spike after lunch.

MNybvcx54 · 25/05/2021 11:16

I also fell off the wagon a bit over the weekend (we had visitors for the first time in many months) but I didn't totally overdo it like I normally would have. And I was properly punished by my body on Sunday as I felt absolutely rotten. I went straight back to the WOE - and I also have been going to bed earlier and leaving my phone in a different room this week, to avoid the temptation to browse the internet when I should be switching off. The extra sleep seems to have helped too as I am not feeling very hungry. Breakfast today was leftover stewed apple, greek yoghurt and a spoonful of cream. Really lovely and filling. Lunch will be something based on salad or roast veg and dinner probably salmon, quinoa and rocket with a smidgeon of hoi sin sauce.
We are away next week, self-catering but I am already a bit worried that it might be trickier to stick to the plan - any suggestions for how to keep focused when on holiday?

HighlandCowbag · 25/05/2021 12:27

Morning all

I think a holiday is a place I would relax rules quite a lot tbh. It depends if you are cooking or not I suppose. Eating out I would be relaxed and chose healthier options so steak, jacket potato and salad for instance rather than lasagna or fish and chips. Or a cooked breakfast but no toast. And if I was cooking in I would have whatever I was cooking for everyone else but avoid the worst things like bread, pasta, pudding etc.

Ive had potato skillet (thanks for the recipe Tinkling, they were lush), with a leftover piece of fish broken up and added with cherry tomatoes and an egg on top. Was so filling and lush. Then have steak, med veg and beef fried chips later which dh was supposed to do last night but he felt ill.

Also just weighed myself, nearly 9lbs down so far, whoop whoop. Think it's about 6 weeks now so sustainable but steady weight loss despite relaxed weekends, an anniversary and a bank holiday. Another bank holiday approaching but I am fine with that, will just do what I can and start again next week.

OhMyChrist2020 · 25/05/2021 13:48

That’s a great weight loss well done HighlandCowbag!

I’ve added lard to my shopping order as I want to try roast potatoes and chips. Do I just melt some in an oven tray and add the potatoes?! Hmm

Flossie44 · 25/05/2021 13:54

Highland, what’s fab weight loss!! And like you say it’s really sustainable. This WoE is lifestyle rather than diet so makes it so much easier to get back on the wagon, doesn’t it. You must be chuffed to bits.

Tinkling, the skillet recipe sounds amazing, I’m going to boil up some potatoes to have at the ready!!

Rankellior - I cycle for about 2 hours 4-5 times a week. I also do it fasted. If I eat beforehand, I find it has a negative impact on my performance as makes me feel really sick. Although I have a banana as soon as I get home and that seems to end the fast, and give me the energy back! I do eat rice and have the odd brown pasta meal too. But I’m essentially sugar free and don’t eat bread. I find loading up the good fats does the trick.

Avocado, pan fried sweetcorn and halloumi salad today with Greek yogurt. Twas lush!!

Flossie44 · 25/05/2021 13:55

That’s. Not what’s 🙄

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/05/2021 17:44

HighlandCowbag, that’s brilliant! Impressed!

Welcome Rankellior and Gensola!

Lunch today was homemade lentil soup - I made chicken stock first (properly, from the chicken carcass) and then turned it into soup immediately rather than leaving it on top of the cooker to go mouldy —like I usually do— . I felt so thrifty and housewifely! I had a couple of olive oil oatcakes with cheese as well. Dinner will be lamb steak with Greek salad and possibly tzatziki for the full Greek experience.

This morning I was going ooh, my waist looks longer and slimmer, how exciting, and then I realised I was wearing different pants (ie, not my usual full brief massive pants) so you could see more of my torso than usual. So not quite a victory!

OP posts:
Tiredandbored · 25/05/2021 18:10

Lol @TooExtraImmatureCheddar, can I borrow your pants if they make you look thinner??? Grin

Welcome to the new people, really great to have you join us. We are all working this out as we go along, so the more people we have chipping in with ideas and meal suggestions the better!

Well done to those who have lost weight, well done also to those who are eating healthier than they were before. Every good food decision is a step in the right direction.

Today:
B - porridge
L - mackerel salad
D - DH was making a fry, so I just took the bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and baked beans.

I'm going dress shopping tomorrow as need an outfit for a wedding, really am not sure what size I am so will either be pleasantly surprised or a bit gutted depending on what fits 🙈🙈🙈 Though I'm more focused on just getting something that is comfortable and I feel confident in than worrying if I'm still a 16 rather than a 14.

Undisclosedlocation · 25/05/2021 21:07

Hi everyone
I’ve spent the last few days listening to the audiobook (not finished it yet) and trawling through these threads.
Whilst I don’t really need to lose weight (well a few lockdown pounds wouldn’t hurt but being is ok), I mostly want to improve my relationship with food and my health. The last 3 days I’ve cut out wheat and sugar and so far I’m feeling better for it.....more alert and happier/more motivated.
Hoping to pick up more tips and support as things will doubtless get harder before this becomes a way of life.

Tiredandbored · 25/05/2021 22:07

That's great @Undisclosedlocation, I've definitely noticed other benefits to this WoE including feeling more energetic and less sluggish in addition to the weight management benefits.

MNybvcx54 · 26/05/2021 07:27

Well done on that amazing weight loss @HighlandCowbag!
And thanks for the holiday advice, I think you’re right, there will be opportunities to eat well (in line with Woe) and there will be times when it’s not practical. The most important thing is that when I get back home I resume where I left off, as my downfall is always giving up when I’ve fallen off the wagon. I’m planning to bring my trainers etc so I can keep up my couch to 5k programme as that will help with general wellbeing.

Tiredandbored · 26/05/2021 07:29

Morning everyone, what's on the menu plans for today? For me:
B - porridge
L - balsamic salad with cherry tomatoes which I'm going to have with some cheese to increase the protein total
D - baked salmon with soy sauce and ginger with roasted veg and new potatoes

HighlandCowbag · 26/05/2021 07:32

Morning Tired

I'm having ploughmans salad for lunch and sausage, mash and veg for dinner. I know sausages are not strictly this woe but my granny would have eaten them so I don't mind them too much and they are decent quality ones so not too many nasties I hope.
