Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 2

Shiny new thread to continue on with! I hope everyone keeps going.

For any newbies, this thread is based on a book by Dr Andrew Jenkinson. The main principles are to cut out sugar, wheat and ultra-processed foods, while eating fresh natural ingredients. It works!

Stuff NOT stiff 😂

Words · 25/06/2021 15:34

@badlydrawncat @TheLeadbetterLife Damn! I'm now craving prawns in garlic butter!
And bother re the Berio olive oil. Already have a bottle of that on the go. I eat a LOT of olive oil...

Words · 25/06/2021 15:36

Oh sorry balsamic rather than oil is it? Phew.

LifestyleReset · 25/06/2021 15:40

Thanks for all the suggestions for the seafood sauce.

Another question - I changed from sugar free squash on Monday to just water. I have an awful taste in my mouth and water just isn't quenching my thirst. Has anyone else had this? I think I may add some berries to the water just for a hint of flavour!

badlydrawncat · 25/06/2021 16:10

The pic was both. The balsamic has caramel (sugar) in it and the oil is a mix of EVOO which is always cold-pressed but also has refined oil with it. Refined anything is not good, it's essentially chemically adulterated according to the good book.

A couple of years ago we went to Pula in Croatia and visited their olive oil museum. It was really interesting. As well as the history they went through the various methods of extracting the oil. They told us about the refining process and I've been aware and avoid it ever since. The last stage of the museum was an olive oil tasting session which was brilliant. I came to the conclusion that I'd actually never previously tested really good quality olive oil but I had tasted quite a few decent ones.

badlydrawncat · 25/06/2021 16:12

@LifestyleReset
I've never had that taste but a few mint leaves in plain water is lovely

LifestyleReset · 25/06/2021 16:26

I just had a glass of water with fresh lemon juice - hit the spot!!

Words · 25/06/2021 17:23

How interesting badly. What oil would you recommend? After the Berio, I have Greek ( Lidl) then Spanish ( Ocado) EVOO in my pantry for cooking.

My 'good' oil at the moment is Belazu early harvest - it says cold extraction unfiltered so guessing that is OK. I once brought back some extremely expensive oil from Provence. It was amazing so I know what you mean about good oil.

On thé menu at the Words Bistro tonight we have:

Galia melon with Parma ham

Plaice with lemon, tomato and capers ( new recipe), spinach, broccoli and cauliflower cheese ( wrong to go with the plaice and wrong because flour, but I am as yet officially unenlightened pending arrival of the good book.)

Rhubarb crumble ( wrong again, very wrong, but it needs eating) and cream. I love cream.

LifestyleReset · 25/06/2021 17:23

Are there any good options from the chip shop? I could have a jacket potato with cheese and salad, but what about the chicken kebab meat? Possibly full of oil?

Words · 25/06/2021 17:30

Could you have. F and small c and leave most of the batter maybe?
I dunno. I am new to this malarkey! Grin

SleepWoof · 25/06/2021 17:46

Hi, I'm another newbie! I'm another diet expert, having tried them all, but I started 10 days ago and can see this is actually sustainable! I did have terrible sugar cravings on day 2 & 3 but that's settled down (my brain does still send me unwanted prompts to go buy ice cream or chocolate though, hopefully those'll clear off soon too). I lost 7lbs in the first week but I absolutely know that's water loss (much peeing) and I've tipped into keto a couple of times, today included, so it's chicken fried rice tonight. It's great to read other peoples experiences plus meal suggestions - it's lunch I struggle with.

Words · 25/06/2021 17:55

Hello sleep. Grin
Seven pounds in a week! Wow!

Forgive the foodie pretentiousness from me everyone by the way, especially as a new gang member.
I'm relatively normal apart from that obsession , I promise ! Grin

Throughtheday · 25/06/2021 18:01

Someone was asking about gram flour. I think it should be fine. As far as I can tell it’s just chickpeas. I love it so if I’m wrong then 🙉

Throughtheday · 25/06/2021 18:09

It makes amazing waffles too.

Throughtheday · 25/06/2021 18:14

I know that feeling when water doesn’t quench your thirst. It feels too thin somehow. What about some really juicy fruit?

badlydrawncat · 25/06/2021 18:21

Hello @SleepWoof, welcome, amazing loss. It's such a boost even if you know it's water 🙋
@Words I'm pretty sure that all EVOO has to be cold-pressed. Successive pressings are harder to get oil from so large producers refine the pulp to get at the oil. Basically outta the same process that's used to make petrol for cars. The 'problem' is that EVOO has most of the volatile oils and flavours from the olives, so it's highly flavoured. Virgin (2nd) and 3rd pressings have less flavour and so are better for e.g. mayo. Except it's not easy to find cold-pressed olive oil that's not EVOO. Ive used cold-pressed rapeseed oil for this for years (hence my discussion on LC boards, I'm not sure it even exists in the USA. Most of my reading suggedts it's fine, but....

LifestyleReset · 25/06/2021 18:50

Not been hungry today

Breakfast was weetabix and whole milk (only 2 more portions left phew!)

Lunch was leftover potato salad and a few walnuts

Dinner is chicken kebab from the chip shop with halloumi

I'm making feta and pea egg muffins tomorrow and a proper curry! Can't wait!

CatherineCawood · 25/06/2021 20:31

@BrightShark

Sorry but life’s too short to make my own humous. I’ll just go without if I have to. But thought it might be good for bbqs with crudités instead of crisps etc.
I found one at Waitrose that has only olive oil in it.
CatherineCawood · 25/06/2021 21:22

This is a good article on lowering your omega 6 intake for anyone who hasn't read the book.

omegavia.com/how-to-reduce-omega-6/

I brought some grass fed beef and lamb so nice and low in omega 6. Obviously you can't buy chicken that isn't fed on grain. Avoid corn fed chicken (I used to buy that as I thought it was healthy) and don't eat the dark meat.

It might be good if we could persuade MN Towers to do a webchat thingy with Dr Jenkinson? I have some questions I would like answered.

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 25/06/2021 22:42

What is EVOO?

BrightShark · 25/06/2021 22:54

@BirdsandBeesmakinghay it’s short for Extra Virgin Olive Oil

@CatherineCawood ooh I’d be up for that. I’ve searched online and seen very few interviews with him. But I guess he’s very busy helping to solve the obesity crisis as a bariatric surgeon!

BrightShark · 25/06/2021 22:54

And thank you @CatherineCawood for the Waitrose tip off (good old Waitrose).

Aria999 · 25/06/2021 22:55

Wow there's a whole thread for this book!

I loved the book and have been going round recommending it to people. It makes so much sense!

The only changes I have made so far are full fat yoghurt for breakfast instead of cereal and snacking on cheese instead of... well... not cheese!

But I only want to lose 5 lbs.

To people trying the 'diet' without reading the book, please go and read the book first. It's not really a diet. It's some very well explained and evidenced recommendations about a different way to think about food and weight loss. I feel that trying to do it as a 'diet' (aka another set of hoops to jump through) will not be as effective.

Aria999 · 25/06/2021 23:04

@Words

If you're hungry you should eat. The whole point is not to deny your body the food it wants. Just don't overdo the sugar and omega 6.

'Eat as many fresh vegetable and dairy products as you wish'.

BrightShark · 25/06/2021 23:25

@Aria999 I second what you said about the importance of reading the book. For me it was a massive mindset shift. Of course I want to lose weight, but now I have a much better understanding of what different foods do to your body ... why diets are counterproductive ... and why not all calories are equal. I have simply gone off eating processed food because of this book, it’s made eating healthier (and losing weight) a piece of cake Grin

Saying that, I’m only 5/6 weeks in so I shouldn’t get ahead of myself I know, but I’ve definitely had a mindset shift after being a serial dieter.
