Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 2

Shiny new thread to continue on with! I hope everyone keeps going.

For any newbies, this thread is based on a book by Dr Andrew Jenkinson. The main principles are to cut out sugar, wheat and ultra-processed foods, while eating fresh natural ingredients. It works!

Hi everyone, I've been lurking since thread 1 but you inspired me to buy Why We Eat, and now I'm partly through Feel Great Lose Weight which seems to say exactly the same in 1/5 of the words. I'm a proper geek and loved the in-depth explanations in Dr Jenkinson's, and it makes it infinitely easier to stick with if i know its a real metabolic rule rather than a made-up diet rule iykwim. Been eating like this for 3 weeks (main change has been lowering omega 6 and upping omega 3 as I was already lowish wheat and sugar. Sadly not an ounce of weight change yet. Well done to those who've already seen benefits! I suspect I'll have a long wait till my body decides its set point can be lower, after 25 years of being hit with every diet going. It's so tempting to jump into cutting meals etc but I'm going to trust the advice in the book, nothing else has helped in the long run.

Where do I find the tv programs and what do people recommend as I tried looking on sky and couldn't find them.

Also what other books have people read/ listened too?

I am struggling so need some more motivation

A eat sugar even tho it makes me feel awful BlushConfused

Ifyoubelieveyouwill · 11/06/2021 10:52

That Sugar Show is on YouTube @chickychicchic

It’s long (2hrs) but entertaining (as well as eye opening) so would be a good watch in the evening with family/partner.

Ifyoubelieveyouwill · 11/06/2021 10:54

I think it should be compulsory viewing in all schools! It’s been made to be accessible and visually engaging, so it’s not your typical science documentary. Which is great because more people are likely to watch and take notice.

Billybagpuss · 11/06/2021 10:58

Please can you link to it @Ifyoubelieveyouwill I’m finding a lot of other stuff or just the preview to that sugar film

Hi everyone, can I join in? Been lurking since beginning of thread 1 and slowly getting my head round this WOE.
I’ve reserved the book at the library so hopefully will be able to read soon.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 11/06/2021 12:45

I’m starting at 104kg Shock so my first goal is to get into double figures Smile

Someone asked upthread about compliant mayonnaise. I used this one when I briefly did keto, I can’t really remember what it tasted like but remember getting through the jar quite quickly!

Billybagpuss · 11/06/2021 13:58

That’s about where I started @YoungBritishPissArtist I’m now 94 (had to google a conversion I work in stone) I gave up sugar on March 6th. So my rules are no ready meals, sugar sweets pudding etc. I do have the occasional crisps and wine at weekends. Good luck

Ifyoubelieveyouwill · 11/06/2021 14:38

@Billybagpuss watch out for the teeth! Shock

Ifyoubelieveyouwill · 11/06/2021 14:43

@YoungBritishPissArtist I started at 103kg Blush just under a month later and I’m down to 98.7kg

Someone upthread said they were in a similar starting place to me. So there’s loads of us in the same boat. Let’s do this and change our diets forever... no deprivation or calorie counting. Just delicious, satisfying food!

Ifyoubelieveyouwill · 11/06/2021 14:49

Oh and thank you @YoungBritishPissArtist I’ve just put an order in with the gather & hunter £35 for their Keto starter box (7 products). It’s nice to know I have some condiments ready to go if I fancy some mayo or ketchup. The avocado oil looks good too, although I’m not sure what MCT oil is??

Which is almost the saving I made this week, not buying crap in my weekly shop! A big bag of popping corn and raisins for the kids snacks, rather than all the crisps/ cake bars/ biscuits/ ice cream I’d usually buy which is quite a saving.
@Billybagpuss watch out for the teeth! Shock
haha, I've completely cut sugar, except wine so hopefully teeth will be fine.

Ifyoubelieveyouwill · 11/06/2021 15:43

I meant in That Sugar Show! There’s a scene with some teeth... that’s all I’ll say!

Billybagpuss · 11/06/2021 15:52

Oh god yes, I just watched it thank you for the link, it was 🤮

Ifyoubelieveyouwill · 11/06/2021 20:57

Wow, the NHS Guidelines are in total disagreement to pretty much everything Dr Jenkinson says in his book.

www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-weight/how-to-diet/

I find it shocking that the NHS is discrediting Dr Michael Moseley and his GP wife Claire who’ve had incredible success with diabetic patients and there are also clinical trials to show how effective rapid weight loss and 5:2 (IF) is (Newcastle). Prof Susan Jebb (Oxford uni) is one the world’s most respected experts on weight loss science and the NHS have totally ignored her evidence along with peers. I don’t understand why their nutritionist Ursula Arens is contracting some pretty solid evidence of what works Confused

Ifyoubelieveyouwill · 11/06/2021 20:57

*contradicting

Tiredandbored · 11/06/2021 21:15

I know @Ifyoubelieveyouwill, my DS brought home the image of the NHS eat well plate from school and the advice on it just seemed so outdated - base your meals around carbohydrates, choose low-fat and sugar-free options, use vegetable and sunflower oils etc.

SIgh. Same here in France. Still on low fat advice. It's outdated rubbish. Skipping breakfast is good, fasting for 16 hours is beneficial for your gut microbiome. I have friends who are prediabetic or diabetic who I know could be helped by cutting out everything they buy from the boulangerie. But of course it isn't the advice given by experts.
Ifyoubelieveyouwill · 11/06/2021 22:12

@Tiredandbored and @samthebordercollie yes exactly, outdated advice, but also very sad and frustrating that people are popping pills rather than changing their health outcomes through diet

I think I’m particularly sensitive because my close relative has upsetting, advancing dementia and it’s pretty clear diabetes has been a big factor in this. If only we’d known what we do now , but it’s too late for them Sad

Ginblooded · 12/06/2021 10:06

Hi everyone, I've just finished reading through both threads - I haven't actually read the book yet but everything you've all said makes so much sense. I've been doing this WOE since Monday and I've barely been hungry. Such a drastic difference from when I just doing calorie counting earlier in the year and ALL I could think about was food. I lost nearly a stone but it wasn't sustainable. Fortunately I haven't put any of the weight back on and have been maintaining so I'm in a good head space to do this (even though this has been my first week back at work sInce I had my baby, I think work has been a distraction!)

Anyway, nice to meet you all Grin

DH takes MCT oil as a supplement, for his mental health, so it must be good! Something about medium chain triglycerides and how they're better than other oils because of how we use them. I'll see if I can find some the info he was reading.

I started about 10 days ago, at 96.1kg and am 94.7kg today, so around 3lbs lost. I switched to weighing in kg this year because I've lost and gained stones and pounds so many times I kept comparing myself to previous weights. I don't have an emotional connection to my weight in kilos, so I cnst just appreciate the numbers.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 12/06/2021 10:25

Can just appreciate the numbers, that should say. It's quite freeing!

I can say that although the official NHS advice may be shit, a lot of what NHS staff are doing goes against it. For example, our local community diabetes team (and many of them nationally, from what I can tell) encourages low carb, one of our GPs promotes 5:2 and The Blood Sugar Diet. I'm a practice nurse and I frequently encourage sugar free and lower carb but never low fat.
Tiredandbored · 12/06/2021 10:57

Welcome @Ginblooded, nice to have you joining us on this journey!

What is on the menu for everyone today? I'm having baked salmon for lunch, not sure about dinner yet.

There were three birthday cakes brought into work this week 🤦 I politely declined the first two, but did have a slice of the third as it was a 50th birthday celebration cake of a close colleague and it felt rude not to though the fact it was a decadent chocolate, caramel and fudge mouth-watering delight from M&S may have been a factor Sometimes when I've been low-sugar a sugar hit has really unsettled my guts, but I have to be honest and say it was divine! I did eat very mindfully though and savoured every bite rather than wolfing it down and going back for seconds like I used to do
