Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 2

Shiny new thread to continue on with! I hope everyone keeps going.

For any newbies, this thread is based on a book by Dr Andrew Jenkinson. The main principles are to cut out sugar, wheat and ultra-processed foods, while eating fresh natural ingredients. It works!

Ugh. I drank last night, which is very rare these days, ate fried rice with the Chinese takeaway and some (homemade) lasagne today. I know it’s not huge in the grand scheme of things and I’m pleased I didn’t succumb to cakes or chocolate, so trying not to beat myself up.

I’ve got straight back into the WOE rather than pushing the Fuck It button and binging like I would have done previously. Also went to pole class tonight when it would have been easier to fall asleep in the sun and will go for a run in the morning.

I still need to lose another 3-4 stone so trying to keep it slow and steady and not be derailed by blips, but also not allowing the blips to creep into regular occurrences when I still have so far to go.

Tiredandbored · 30/05/2021 21:23

Well done @BangingOn for not succumbing and just eating everything in sight, that's a win in my book! This WoE has to be sustainable long-term and that means there are going to be occasions when we eat crap food or have cake and that's ok, as long as it's not everyday.

I'm trying to follow the advice Gillespie gave in his book about sugar that 'party food is for parties' - that means we can enjoy birthday cake or nice Christmas shortbread or some anniversary chocolates, as long as we're not having those things too often but only in the special occasions.

So I'm not going to beat myself up if I want some cake at my sister's birthday party and I don't think you should be too sore on yourself.

Much better to have a little occasionally than totally deprive yourself and then have a massive blowout and mainline sugar for a fortnight speaking from bitter experience

Wandamakesporridge · 31/05/2021 08:08

Hi all, haven’t posted in a while as things have been busy. I am still continuing with this WoE although admittedly with a few more slip-ups than at the start! However as you say Tiredandbored, it doesn’t mean I give up altogether, as I am still eating a lot more healthily than before.

However I watched the ‘What are we feeding our kids’ programme with DH, it was quite shocking. I think it helped him to understand what I am doing - that’s it’s less about the amount you eat, but what you eat.
We eat well at mealtimes, we always cook from scratch with lots of veg, but both feel the DCs eat too much processed food as snacks and in their packed lunches, so we are going to look at alternatives for them.

Anyway - this recipe for baked eggs just popped into my emails and I thought it looked interesting, especially the variations, in case we are getting bored of omelettes!

BangingOn · 31/05/2021 09:04

@Tiredandbored that is such good advice, thank you. I like party food for parties and will try to stick to that.

HighlandCowbag · 31/05/2021 09:46

Wanda I've done a version of those eggs, used ham in the bottom of the dish, cherry toms sliced in half scattered around, broke the eggs in then topped with cheese. Was absolutely lush.

Did well at my bbq last night despite being really very drunk. Just had homemade chicken shish kebabs and salads, really enjoyed it. Had far too much to drink though and not enjoying the hangover 😪.

OhMyChrist2020 · 31/05/2021 10:43

Those eggs look lovely Wanda, I’ll deffo be giving those a try 🍳
I’ve had my lovely porridge for breakfast and although I’ve got some scheduled off plan meals eating out this week, I’m going to aim to make healthy choices for the at home meals that I have control over. And DH is onboard too 🙌 I’m going to make DH/DS watch That Sugar Film this evening too.
Hope your hangover eases quickly HighlandCowbag!!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 31/05/2021 16:13

Hi guys, soldiering on here too - solidarity with the hangover, HighlandCowbag, that was me on Saturday morning entirely by accident!

I've been reasonably on-plan for the weekend bar a bit of extra drink. I did have two Welsh cakes yesterday but I give myself a pass for those because they were homemade, and DH had been mithering on about Welsh cakes for flipping weeks and I just wanted him to shut up, and I count it as a win that I only ate 2 when I could have had 6.

I definitely eat more at weekends, though, even if I do manage to stick to approved food. I've also been really hungry today - usually I have an omelette at lunchtime and I'm fine until dinner, but I was still starving even after eating it today and I had an apple and then Greek yoghurt with cream and raspberries to fill myself up. AF's not due for a week so this seems a bit early to be having the munchies!

HighlandCowbag · 31/05/2021 16:46

I've broken today, had a gyros at a craft market thing we went to. Loads of salad and grilled chicken which is good. Also a handful of chips and the bread which is bad. Was better than the hotdog or burger option tho I suppose and they did say the breads were homemade. I really enjoyed it tho, definitely worth breaking the diet for.

Having chicken shish and salad tonight which is on plan. Been a chickeny kind of weekend. And a beery one but not drinking tonight. I have a rule of no alcohol on a school night. Its half term week tho and we have said we will do a bbq later in the week so will probably drink then so saving myself a bit.

1 more uni assignment to get in, be very glad to get that finished and sent off. Due by next monday but going to try and get it in by Thursday/friday.

JeffVaderneedsatray · 31/05/2021 17:17

Afternoon all.
Really struggling at the moment. My mum is here so I just can't......
Positives though

  • Have rediscovered the joy that is a bite of apple and a bite of cheese
  • I like rice cakes
  • Kallo do rice cakes with dark chocolate on them (for emergencies!)

Mum goes tomorrow after we've had lunch with my aunt so then I can dig in and get on with it.

Tiredandbored · 31/05/2021 17:17

I had my second BBQ challenge yesterday which I managed by loading up my plate with salads first. Meant I had much less room on it for anything else so I only took one burger (no bread roll). There was a pasta salad in the mix, but only had a small helping of it.

Dessert was a bit more challenging, but overcame temptation by not going near the dessert table, but asked my DH to bring me down a fruit salad. So all in all I'm quite pleased that I didn't end up eating loads of things I shouldn't be.

Interestingly I really didn't feel like I had missed out. I did sneak a peek at what other people took for dessert, but apart from the chocolate cake which I could have buried my face into most of it didn't appeal all that much. That is very unusual for me as I could have eaten 3 or 4 portions of dessert at a BBQ before and still gone back for more I'm assuming my taste buds have changed a bit, can't think of any other reason why I wasn't more tempted by the offerings 🤷

I saw a few similar threads after the programme aired, a couple of which became somewhat contentious! It's much more sedate over here... 😂

This did make me laugh though!

Yes!!! The scales moved! 2lbs down overnight after 2 weeks stuck on the same weight. That’s nearly half a stone in total - only 0.4lb to go.

OP posts:
HighlandCowbag · 01/06/2021 09:30

That's brilliant TooMuch. Well done.

Mine have moved as well but up rather than down 😁. Expected it after a weekend of indulgence, AF is due and some will be water retention. Pleased it's only up 1 tbh, expected 2 at least.

Back on plan today. Am mega busy this week, dds off and assignment to finish. Today am going to have a quick tidy around and make a start on assignment, and possibly get to ponies later. Will have salad for lunch, then not sure on later. Have got salmon in the freezer and some other bits so will have a rummage.

Tinkling · 01/06/2021 12:54

Hi all!

Been busy here so haven’t had much opportunity for MN. Half term is always a struggle for me because I am out of my routine and can’t get my usual exercise in (hence why lockdown saw weight gain!)

I am giving myself a pass to have processed food this week - I am back to waffles for breakfast with my eggs rather than making up potato skillet, I made a pasta bake for dinner last night and I have a roll left over for packed lunch on Friday as we are out at an event with friends. However that is it - it’s not a pass to full on eat. So far it’s working ok although it’s so lovely and warm, I do keep thinking of the mini milks in the freezer!

I haven’t had a chance to read the UPF threads but I do get the general feeling that people don’t want to stop eating them because it’s so convenient...

I was watching Michael Moseley’s 21 day challenge and was so disappointed to see the dad exercising and changing his diet but watching his children eating chicken nuggets and chips for dinner.

My DC made their own lunch yesterday and we had a chat about it afterwards. They had white bread rolls (left over from bbq) with butter and jam, some cucumber and carrot, then two party rings and an angel delight! We talked about what was healthy and what was not on their plate, and how could we make lunch more balanced tomorrow. Today I made it, they had the last 2 rolls with butter and ham, some cucumber and raisins. I don’t think they were overly impressed with me. Daddy is far more relaxed! Anyway back to granary tomorrow.

I hope you’re all enjoying the sunshine and I’ll check back in when I can.

Well done on all of your wins! X

Gensola · 01/06/2021 13:10

I’m jealous of DH on half term - I’m WFH this week as had leg surgery last week. He’s gone to visit the in laws today though so not too sorry to have an excuse not to go with Grin
Food today so far - Greek yoghurt with raspberries and blueberries and hazelnuts. Salad with chicken, roast fennel, peppers aged cheese and half an apple.
Dinner is going to be a prawn curry with courgette, pepper, coconut milk and cauliflower “rice”.

Hello everyone
Congatulations on your weight loss Toomuch especially after a sunny bank holiday weekend, 0,4lbs is nothing. It is all due to this WOE?

Highlang your weight will probably go down tomorrow once you have got rid of all the indulgence water weight.

Tinkling Enjoy your half term week off. I watched the MM 21 day challenge too, it's quite shocking to see the before diets. Agree that it was odd to see the father feeding his kids UPF!

Scales are staying pretty stable despite me having to have 6 weeks off running for knee. It's so much easier in the hot weather to eat a lot of salads and fruit. I don't need bread with a good mixed salad, it isn't the same with soup!
Nestlé have admitted that most of their products are unhealthy. Not sure what they can do about it without taking a vast hit on profits!

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 01/06/2021 13:43

I've just started reading this book and think I am going to give some of the principles a go.

I'm a healthy BMI, regular exerciser etc., but could probably do with dropping a few pounds. I don't want to diet though - dieting tends to lead to bingeing for me. I mainly eat 'real food' as the moment, but definitely too much sugar and more processed food than is good for me (as pretty much everything you can buy seems to be fairly heavily processed).

I have a couple of questions for those who have got into the swing of this:

  • Is cold pressed rapeseed oil ok? I mainly use olive oil but do cook with cold pressed rapeseed oil as well. I thought it was healthy because it isn't processed using chemicals.
  • Do you use wheat flour substitutes when cooking? E.g. to make gnocchi, could I use oat flour (basically blitzed up oats) and potatoes?
BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 01/06/2021 13:44

Also - as supermarket houmous often contains weird additives, should I be making my own? It all seems quite time-intensive.

Gensola · 01/06/2021 15:41

@BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand I’ve started making my own hummus, I just blend chickpeas (tinned, sadly, life is too short for soaking and boiling lol) with lemon juice, a good tablespoon of tahini, crushed garlic, salt and olive oil and add a bit of cumin and paprika. Lots of lemon juice needed. I find it keeps well for 3-5 days in Tupperware in fridge but rarely lasts that long tbh Grin
I also make a garlicky yoghurt dip with natural yoghurt, chopped mint and crushed garlic and add diced cucumber to give a tzaziki feel.

OhMyChrist2020 · 01/06/2021 16:29

Hi @BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand I think we collectively decided that cold pressed rapeseed oil was an ok substitute for olive oil. I personally don’t use flour substitutes but I can’t see that they’d do much harm if just oats etc.

Well done on weight loss TooMuch. I haven’t weighed for ages but might get on the scales on Sunday as I’m planning on getting back to following Dr J’s guidelines STRICTLY again from Sunday onwards.

As previously planned, I took DS out to a cafe today as I’d promised him ages ago that we’d go as they do nice cakes & sundaes etc. We both got cake and ice cream as a half term treat and whilst they looked amazing I didn’t massively enjoy it. I’m paying close attention to off plan foods when I eat them, and I’m coming to the conclusion that the anticipation of things like this is better than the reality. I was a bit like this when I stopped drinking. When I felt like I was missing out on something I kept falling off the wagon but once I’d realised that I actually didn’t enjoy how drinking made me feel (whilst drinking and afterwards) then I stopped even wanting to drink. I’m beginning to feel that way about unhealthy food. It’s work in progress...

Despite today’s sugar bomb, I’ve done an intensive 1-hour gym class and been for a walk and have jacket potato, tuna & salad planned for tea so am hoping I’ve mitigated the damage a bit. My gym class was the opposite of the cake in that I didn’t really want to go but then really enjoyed it and remembered how good hard exercise makes me feel afterwards.

Oh, it wasn’t a bank holiday in Scotland - much less temptation! But yes, that’s 6.6lbs down in 6 weeks on this WOE, with a fair few barbecues/boozy nights! DM has just invited us for afternoon tea at a v posh hotel on Sat, though, so I will be well and truly off plan then. I looked at the menu and it’s all cake and scones and sandwiches and sausage rolls - made from scratch using best ingredients, though. Oh well. I’ve never been to this hotel before and I’m not going to pass it up!

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 02/06/2021 18:55

Ok, so I think step one for me is just to stop eating processed sugar and go from there. I already cook with unprocessed oils, but eat a lot of junk that contains vegetable oil, so will look at that too.

I enjoy fruit for breakfast, so will carry on with that for the time being.

I get intense sugar cravings though! Need to train myself out of them.
