Noom

Hi everyone , can anyone explain what Noom actually is ? Is it an eating plan with motivational support and suggested fitness activities? Do you think it's worth paying? It's so hard to get a true reflection on its method prior to signing up . When I went through the Matrix , it even asked me how much I wanted to pay ???? That makes me suspicious. Would love to hear from others experience of using Noom , thank you !

My dad is loving it, he has lost two stone. Sounds like a modern weight watchers to me. Advice, guidance and support but sure someone will explain better!

jannyapple · 05/05/2021 08:20

Thank you @doadeer that's a start !

I joined last night so not much help so far. But it is about eating foods that are a low calorie density. They have green, yellow and red foods. Aiming to eat more green. It seems to talk alot about food and weight loss education and trying to change habits. You can log your food on it. Gives you recipes. It has 'lessons' to try and change your mindset and get you to understand why you do things. You need to weigh yourself daily (apparently a Harvard study showed you lose more weight that way) and it is to try and get you healthy so a bit mind, body and soul kind of thing. Better sleep. Reaching goals. I have signed up for a 2 week trial and will see how it goes before deciding if I want to pay 8 months up front.....we shall see!

jannyapple · 05/05/2021 16:42

Thank you @doadeer good luck
It sounds very similar to other methods I've done before then , good luck on your journey ! I may just find someone who could wire my teeth together

It’s calorie counting with an emphasis on eating low calorific density foods (those that supposedly keep you fuller for longer). Also CBT style articles that are pretty twee.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 05/05/2021 16:48

I’m 4 months into Noom. Lost 2 stone. There’s calorie counting - as pp said there’s different categories and allowances for each so it helps you eat the right calories not just the right amount of calories.
The articles are good. Gets you thinking about your motivation as well as helping you learn about what and how to eat.
As with any diet I’ve done I go off the rails after 3 months (or birthday and Easter in this case) and out most back on again. Although I’ve not lost much more in the last month I’ve not put any on and make better choices rather than eating all the carbs and chocolate.
If you get it on a deal it’s cheaper than slimming world. You also get online support from your coach and others doing it that you can use or not use depending on your preference for such things. I find that bit a bit twee for me but I have a couple of friends doing it and we support each other

Thank you all so much !

I have been using it for a month. I find it really good and have lost half a stone. Going for slow and steady loss and it’s working pretty easily so far.

jannyapple · 06/05/2021 06:17

Thank you @123fushia

I'm still thinking about it , kind of willing to try anything !

jannyapple I'm thinking about it too, I there is a free trial option so might give that a go

123fushia Idontgiveagriffindamn great results thanks

tobee · 06/05/2021 19:15

I find it good for accountability! I'm on week 3

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 08/05/2021 03:12

trying to decide whether to do this or second nature.
I know the theory - it's the emotional binging every time that scuppers it Hmm

jannyapple · 08/05/2021 06:52

I'm still in 2 minds ! As an adult professional of sound mind and faculties... why is it so hard to just eat healthily ... keep treats to a minimum ... exercise regularly ... be health mindful of obesity risks and the growing wardrobe that I cannot fit into !!!!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 08/05/2021 09:30

thanks Jannyapple - maybe I should change my username to something more positive as a startGrin.
I did the matrix last night, and the asking to pay for the free trial put me off a bit too - seems a hook to get my bank/card details,
Agree with your "professional adult of sound mind" too...just why?

Still pondering - and it's definitely start after my holiday and birthday in a couple of weeks time, thanks for your reply - and very best wishes for whatever method you go with.

I tried Noom- in my opinion it offers less than my fitness pal. The food logging is the issue. It is totally American and all in cups. There is very little UK food added unlike my fitness pal

Noom have spent a fortune advertising in the UK without investing in updating the food logging for the uK market

All UK food has calories displayed. We don’t use cups but grammes

You can’t select chips. Chips being a potato product similar but not the same as French fries. When you select chips you get crisps but even the basic Uk Walkers are not there

But the complacency is most obvious with Starbucks which sums up the issue. Uk and USA menus are not the same and due to milk differences when they have the same name they do not have the same calories. In the UK the calories are on the Starbucks board. To have sent an employee to Starbucks or looked on the UK website to add the food would have been a simple job

Not sure if it is ignorance or arrogance? The result is that the product is not fit for purpose for the UK

lostlife · 08/05/2021 16:35

it also has the con feeling of an MLM- all very culty

LyndaMcLynda · 08/05/2021 16:36

Don't pay the full price - do the free trial and cancel, and they'll ask you how much you want to pay so you can get it loads cheaper than the price that's advertised.

lostlife · 08/05/2021 16:36

Plus after 10 days of following it religiously- they gave me a very high calorie allowance of 1200 I had lost 1lb. Thats a big poo

Swapped to my fitness pal- cut to 1000 and lost 4lbs in a week

jannyapple · 08/05/2021 18:05

Thank you all for the most recent reviews ... yes this was my fear , I'd heard not really geared towards us Brits .. oh well does anyone have pliers and some tooth wire ?

I haven’t had a problem with the UK v US part. Yes a lot of things are measured in cups and randomly flour is in slices??? I just change it to grams. Also I’d say over 80% of the things I buy from Sainsbury’s are on there when you scan the barcode.
OhhelpohnoitsMarkRuffalo · 08/05/2021 18:27

Also not sure where the MLM feel comes from. In no way are you asked to sell to people or recruit. You can recommend a friend as you can with a lot of things

the constant alerts, Instagram posts- the sleazy feel
OhhelpohnoitsMarkRuffalo · 08/05/2021 18:52

You mean the marketing? Hmm
So other than you not liking the marketing (which is not to everyone’s taste) there is no MLM part to it and I think it’s quite unfair to tar it with the MLM brush.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 08/05/2021 19:42

thanks, some useful thoughts here, esp the UK/US thing

jannyapple · 08/05/2021 19:44

Yes I've appreciated the opinions thoughts and experiences.. decided not to bother ... back to drawing board MFP , Fitbit and healthy shopping trip , plenty of fluids and not beat myself up about it all
