Weight loss for vegetarians

LargeInCharge · 16/04/2021 12:55

Hello!
I’ve been a vegetarian nearly all my life and I want to lose weight to be healthier (and to look better in my clothes) so I thought I’d create a space where fellow veggies (and vegans too) can share their weight loss journeys, food ideas, recipes and how they are feeling.

I started my journey on Tuesday so this is day 4 for me. My daily calorie limit is 1200.

Weight - 15st 4 (weighed on day 1)
Height - 5’ 9
Goal weight - 10st 7

How I gained weight - not exercising, eating crisps, cake, too many carbs and booze.
Positive changes - trying to be more active, ditched the crisps, cake and booze. Limiting my carbs as much as I can.

No pressure to reveal weight or anything that’s personal to you.

Good luck. 🥗🌽🥦🥬🥕🥒🫑🥑🥭🍅🍑🍓🍌🥥🫐

@Yourownpersonaljesus I've had a bad few days soon, but carbs rather than chocolate being the downfall.

I'm 2kg off my original target weight, but just can't seem to stick to or lose at the moment. Don't know if anyone else had that problem?
My eating is just erratic at the moment, just finding it difficult to get into 'eat to live' not 'live to eat' mode after Christmas.
Again, doesn't help that it's the end of Veganuary and all the processed vegan crap is on offer. Next week (she saysHmm)

Goldilocks99 · 21/01/2022 18:09

@LuckyKitty13 your meal plans are putting me to shame haha. I need to get back on it and stop the carb binge.

LuckyKitty13 · 22/01/2022 16:11

Ah don’t think that! I’m only a week or so in - many days left to fall off the wagon. I’m sure you’re doing great.

A funny day of eating for me today - was up at 5am so the timings have gone a bit wrong!

Breakfast at 5.15am was rye toast with peanut butter and an apple.
Lunch was at 11.45am - lentil and veg soup, and a nakd bar afterwards.
I’m felt hungry just now so am having a cheese and tomato sandwich, raw pepper and carrot sticks, and some raspberries.

Nothing else planned but if I get hungry later l have some Greek yogurt or maybe some oatcakes and cheese? Will try not to though!! Got some sewing to do and some life admin - hopefully can keep myself busy!

Yourownpersonaljesus · 22/01/2022 18:37

That's an early start @LuckyKitty13. Here is what I've consumed today:
B - porridge, sliced banana, chopped dates and linseeds

L - Squeaky bean tikka pieces and light mayo in a protein bagel thin, an apple.
S - a cupcake
D -The tikka pieces had today's date on so: SB tikka pieces (with light mayo) in a soft pitta, strong roots cauliflower hash browns, strong roots broccoli and carrot bites, green beans, carrots and broccoli.
I really shouldn't have anything else but I'm going to have some chocolates later!
Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone.

Is anyone weighing in?

Decided to weigh this morning before my breakfast! 64 kg ! I’m sure I used to be in the 70s. And I was 65.5kg before I was pregnant 3 years ago - so seeing that as a win! I’m not weighing every week, but might do again in 2-3 weeks.

Managed not to have anything else to eat after 4pm yesterday. Will update food eaten later ! Good luck today everyone.

Goldilocks99 · 23/01/2022 11:54

66.2kg for me. I'm setting myself the minimum goal of a stable 65kg for the end of Planning on trying for my second child after that so will have to knock fasting and dieting on the head.
It should be doable. I've lost a lot since I started but this last bit has been the hardest. Partly because of carby willpower, party due to my body probably thinks this is close enough to my norm(my pre pregnancy weight was 65ish but I was much more muscled so 63 would probably be better.)
Will use up carbs today and start in earnest tomorrow. Plan is:
Lunch: blackberry and walnut salad.
Tea: Chinese mushroom broth and might try carrot and beetroot sushi.

Goldilocks99 · 23/01/2022 11:57

End of February that is.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 23/01/2022 14:23

64.4kg (10 stone 2) for me. I was expecting it to be higher so I'm happy with that. I'd like to get back to 10 stone ideally though. So far today I've eaten:
B - porridge with chopped banana and a spoon of biscoff spread.
S - too many rich tea biscuits!
L - a whole tub of reduced fat humous with raw carrot, cherry tomatoes, red pepper and a rice cake, 6 prunes.
I don't usually eat a whole tub of humous but it had today's date on. I keep buying too much food and then have to eat it all before it goes out of date! Need to stop doing this. Not sure what I'm having for dinner later - it depends if DD is home for dinner or not.

LuckyKitty13 · 23/01/2022 17:01

Ah it’s nice to see we are all a similar weight actually. Best of luck for trying for your second baby. I actually found it easier to eat well when I was pregnant as I was so very conscious that what I ate was feeding my baby - I ate no sugar or any kind of junk from the moment I found out I was pregnant. Only gained a stone and was back to my pre baby weight in 2 weeks. Started gaining when baby started weaning - she didn’t eat hardly anything until she was about 15 months and I ate all her leftovers as I hate food waste! She’s now eating normally and eats everything I do, very minor leftovers now.

Todays meals:
Rye toast with peanut butter and an apple.
Roast gnocci with butternut squash, mushrooms and a fresh basil and pine nut dressing.
Lentil and vegetable soup and a cheese sandwich.

Have any of you got the book “the green roasting tin” - it’s absolutely brilliant for simple and easy veggie and vegan recipes, and best of all they are all in one tin so minimal washing up! A lot of my recipes are from there.

Goldilocks99 · 23/01/2022 17:18

Yes, I was very conscious about eating well with my first baby. I'm even more nervous about it this time because my first has developmental delay (likely from a birth injury, but having one child who doesn't meet milestones made me extra paranoid.) I will probably go back vegetarian if I get pregnant this year to cope with my anxiety so will need help with that as I wasn't a very healthy vegetarian before. Lived on cheese haha.

Yes I have the green roasting tin, I have to be careful though, the satay potato dish made me fat haha.

I have to confess that today was totally off the wagon. It was the last carb stand and Dh wanted the McDonald's plant burger. Still, starting in earnest tomorrow. Will log properly then. No point in doing so today. It was bad lol!

LuckyKitty13 · 23/01/2022 17:52

Oh the gado gado!!! Oh that is fabulous!
My favourite is the satay tofu with the coconut rice. Vegan but so fattening !!

Yourownpersonaljesus · 23/01/2022 20:38

I don't have that book but am going to order it after pay day! My mouth is watering reading the recipes in the reviews. Is the baked gnocci from there? Sounds lovely.

Goldilocks99 · 23/01/2022 21:00

There are two gnocchi recipes in there: mushroom squash and sage Vegan version and gnocchi roasted peppers chilli rosemary and ricotta.
I might do a vegan version of the chilli one.
Gnocchi
Mixed bell peppers chopped
Cherry tomatoes halved
Olive oil
Garlic
Bay leaves
Chilli flakes
Rosemary
Sea salt
Black pepper
Ricotta
Parsley

Preheat oven, boil kettle pour on gnocchi and leave for two minutes
Put everything bar cheese into roasting tin.
Cook for 30 mins 200 degrees
Add ricotta at the end.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 23/01/2022 21:07

Thank you. Both sound good. I'll buy the ingredients for the ricotta one next weekend but leave the ricotta out as DD doesn't like cheese. We are big fans of gnocci but have never had it roasted before.

Goldilocks99 · 23/01/2022 21:10

Just seen a beetroot curry recipe too that'll modify to be lower fat and test out.

LuckyKitty13 · 24/01/2022 04:26

It’s a great book! Yes I made the vegan mushroom squash and sage gnocchi (but couldn’t get sage from the shop so left that out). The dressing was delicious

LuckyKitty13 · 24/01/2022 15:17

Meals today:
Rye toast with peanut butter and an apple.
One small piece of shortbread at a relatives house mid morning.
Lunch was a picnic (very cold!) - lentil wedges, carrot sticks, few spoonfuls of soup, kiwi, apple slices, nakd bar.
Dinner will be a bean chilli from the green tasting tin - I won’t have rice.

Goldilocks99 · 24/01/2022 22:05

Ohhh homemade lentil wedges?
Bit of a mixed bag for me today.
Blackberry, avocado, lettuce and pesto pasta salad.
Sliced potatoes, homemade stuffing and vegan sausages.
Large slice birthday cake(trial run for Ds birthday.)
Gone up a bit since the weekend, but sending DH into work with the rest of the cake so hopefully that's temptation removed.

LuckyKitty13 · 25/01/2022 18:14

The lentil recipe is out of the baby led weaning book - cooked red lentils, mixed grated veg, a bit of grated cheese if you want, an egg, herbs or spices, and I usually add a spoon of whole meal flour. Mix it all up and press into a cake tin. Cook for 30 mins and leave to cool a little before slicing into wedges. Great hot or cold. I use it in picnics, with salad, to take as a packed lunch etc. very filling and healthier than bread.

Mixed bag for me too actually today.
Breakfast was porridge.
Lunch was lentil wedges, carrot sticks, satsumas x2, nakd bar and a chocolate biscuit!! Bad me!
Dinner was left over bean chilli with some brown rice.

Goldilocks99 · 25/01/2022 18:48

I wonder if I could sub the egg for some aquafaba...
Ok today, pea flour pasta, butternut squash and chic pea pasta.
Roasted tofu and aubergine with mushrooms, miso, sesame, seaweed and soy sauce.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 25/01/2022 19:03

Not a very healthy day for me.
B - granola and natural yoghurt, half a bagel.
S - banana
L - 2 higgidy no pork pies with some chilli jam and cherry tomatoes, prunes, a satsuma, a kiwi fruit, a bag of lentil waves, a bliss bar.
D - spinach gnocci with arabiatta sauce
And 3 mini rolls throughout the afternoon!!! Why do I have no willpower?!

Goldilocks99 · 25/01/2022 19:59

That doesn't look bad at all @Yourownpersonaljesus. Not for an off the wagon day. When I fall off the wagon copious amounts of space raiders are involved lol. I try and look at it from a did I eat more than this to go up 3 sizes? Anything less than what I had to get to my biggest is considered a win.

LuckyKitty13 · 25/01/2022 20:08

Ah sorry I do sometimes make it vegan - I either leave the egg out totally (it still works) or use flax egg (ground flaxseed mixed with a small amount water)

Yourownpersonaljesus · 25/01/2022 20:59

Mmmm space raiders @Goldilocks99 - I fancy some now (grin). I definitely used to eat loads more when I was putting on weight. My problem atm is that I can't just eat a small amount of chocolate/ cakes/ biscuits - I didn't need 3 mini rolls but that was how many I had in the cupboard so I had to keep eating them. When I was losing weight I managed to limit myself to sensible amounts of those foods but I've been struggling for a while now.

Goldilocks99 · 25/01/2022 21:55

Thanks Kitty I will try it sometime.
That sounds very similar to me, Your own lost lots of weight initially then lost the momentum and willpower over Xmas. Just trying to get back into it now.
