Weight loss for vegetarians

LargeInCharge · 16/04/2021 12:55

Hello!
I’ve been a vegetarian nearly all my life and I want to lose weight to be healthier (and to look better in my clothes) so I thought I’d create a space where fellow veggies (and vegans too) can share their weight loss journeys, food ideas, recipes and how they are feeling.

I started my journey on Tuesday so this is day 4 for me. My daily calorie limit is 1200.

Weight - 15st 4 (weighed on day 1)
Height - 5’ 9
Goal weight - 10st 7

How I gained weight - not exercising, eating crisps, cake, too many carbs and booze.
Positive changes - trying to be more active, ditched the crisps, cake and booze. Limiting my carbs as much as I can.

No pressure to reveal weight or anything that’s personal to you.

Good luck. 🥗🌽🥦🥬🥕🥒🫑🥑🥭🍅🍑🍓🍌🥥🫐

I think it is very unlikely being vegan I'd be lacking in fibre. Obviously will have more than average.
My set weight has obviously changed as ate my old pre weight gain rate for a few days and put on. Bit disappointing as before I was always effortlessly thin.
I used to do a lot of exercise too, but list the time and muscles to do it through childbirth (core based) my husband has looked after babe for an evening a week for gymnastics, but that kept getting derailed by little one's colds and illness.
I will consider it a win if I can get to new year without significant gain.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 21/12/2021 16:40

What is everyone having for Christmas dinner? I've ordered this: www.ocado.com/products/m-s-plant-kitchen-vegan-turkey-roast-566724011?from=order&param=3595538674&parentContainer=ORDER%7C3595538674
and this: www.ocado.com/products/m-s-plant-kitchen-butternut-almond-pecan-nut-roast-534268011?from=order&param=3595538674&parentContainer=ORDER%7C3595538674
I haven't decided which one to have on Christmas day yet. Also I thought I'd better order two things in case one is missing/substituted. I had a really disappointing Christmas dinner last year - beetroot in puff pastry from Waitrose. I love beetroot but it really wasn't great. Hopefully I've made better choices this year! I've not been making the healthiest choices this week but I am working out every day so I don't feel so bad!

Goldilocks99 · 21/12/2021 20:30

My mum is doing a nut roast, but we're supplementing that with the Morrisons sausage wreath. We did have a Aldi vegan camerbert but roast but, um, it got eaten. As did the Morrisons one I got to replace it. Am hitting the shops tomorrow incase we need a plan b, so any ideas gratefully received.
I'm jealous of the fake roast btw, all put of those where we are. Pout.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 21/12/2021 21:25

Sadly I don't have a Morrisons or Aldi near me or I'd be buying the vegan camembert nut roast - sounds lovely. I ordered the fake turkey months ago so I hope it does get delivered. I bought a plant kitchen fake turkey sandwich from M and S recently and it was really nice.

Goldilocks99 · 22/12/2021 13:32

Sadly our Aldi sold out of the nut roast so we can't replace it for Christmas day.
Got some stuffing on offer in the free from section in Asda if anyone is interested. Mushroom and chestnut. Plan to pair it with cranberries and freeze. Can you freeze stuffing?
Good shout on m and s. Will check it for meat like roast substitute as DH really likes those.

I've gone up half a kilogram, but managed to get into my size ten dungarees today, so swings and roundabouts.

Fast day today. Stock, casserole vegetables, sprouts and lentil stew planned for tea. May pair with a baked potato.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 22/12/2021 19:31

That's very impressive getting into your size 10 dungarees @Goldilocks99. I had spaghetti and lentil bolognese for dinner tonight and far too many of these: www.lakeland.co.uk/60961/Lebkuchen-Dark-Choc-Fruit-Filled-Heart

Yourownpersonaljesus · 27/12/2021 18:18

Hello fellow vegetarians/vegans. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas.
I'm posting today as I feel I need to be accountable for what I'm eating! Christmas day wasn't too bad (went nearly 400 cals over my maintenance cals) but on Boxing Day I ate an obscene amount of food (over a thousand extra cals), in fact I ate so much that I went to bed feeling sick and disgusted with myself. I've eaten okay today and managed a workout this morning. Dinner tonight was my favourite Christmastime meal of cold meat (fake meat in my case obviously) with mashed potato, carrots, peas, pickles etc - it was lovely. The problem is that there are still loads of goodies in the house - need to get my willpower back.

Goldilocks99 · 28/12/2021 17:44

That's a much better effort than me @Yourownpersonaljesus, I have had two slices of bosh chocolate cake today alone. I can't seem to commit to accountability at the moment. I might have to set January 2nd as reset day.
Away from home and the scales, but it wasn't good when I left- 2kg up on boxing Day 😳
How about we have a gentle climb down from the festivities? I might go for beer or pudding but not both. Not that that's accountability really but at the moment my willpower is rock bottom. I'm just going to have to take the hit and take it off in January. DH and I have a takeaway planned as our Xmas present to eachother so will have to chose carefully as it will be the only one for a while.
Impressed with the workout by the way!

Yourownpersonaljesus · 28/12/2021 19:55

I like the sound of a gentle climb down from the festivities @Goldilocks99. I had some chocolate biscuits after lunch today and some chocolates after dinner from an open box that kept calling to me every time I opened the fridge. I did only eat 4 though, which is good for me! Last time I ate some chocolates I ate 11!!! I only went 48 cals over my maintenance calories today so I'll take that as a win. Also did a workout this morning so I feel that I'm allowed some chocolate! Enjoy your takeaway!

Goldilocks99 · 29/12/2021 10:02

Four is amazing. Well done on the self control. Workouts will be offsetting for sure. I need to check my own maintenance calories as it's all gone a bit out of window.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 01/01/2022 21:46

How is everyone doing? I've been eating way too much chocolate and had a lovely (but very unhealthy) Indian takeaway on NYE. I've got an Ocado delivery coming on Monday but currently have hardly any fruit and veg in the house so am basically eating crap atm. Any ideas for quick, easy meals - I need inspiration (can still add to my shop).

Goldilocks99 · 03/01/2022 23:33

Hi, I'm not doing well. Up 2 1/2 kg. DOH. On the bread wagon. Currently working my way through the Xmas junk then doing a healthy shop.

Healthy shop ideas:
Jerk tofu and mango salad.
Mushroom stuffed peppers, vegan feta and rocket salad
Vegan stew and baked potato
No carb fajitas

Yourownpersonaljesus · 04/01/2022 20:15

Thanks for the ideas @Goldilocks99. Don't worry about the small increase - once you've you've done a healthy shop you'll get back on track. Well my online shop came yesterday and loads of it was missing so I took a trip to Waitrose. Spent a fortune (though luckily DD works there so used her discount card) on loads of lovely healthy food which has given me the motivation to start eating healthily again. In fact today was the first day I've stuck to my maintenance calories for a quite a while. Here's what I ate:
B - porridge with chopped up banana, flax seeds and honey.
L - Soupalicious carrot and butternut soup (highly recommended) with 2 slices of Livlife low carb bread.
S - cup of tea and 2 shortbread biscuits.
D - Avocado and grilled tomatoes on 2 slices of toast (using the same bread as earlier), natural yoghurt with some granola, a satsuma.
And I've just had some Terry's chocolate orange!
So still using up the Christmas stuff but trying to eat less of it. We can do this!

Yourownpersonaljesus · 07/01/2022 21:57

I went back to work after the Christmas break and have had a terrible few days. My meals have been really healthy but I have also eaten loads of chocolate. We have loads at work left over from before Christmas and I just can't resist it. And yesterday I ate a whole packet of party rings - that's about 500 calories!!!

LuckyKitty13 · 10/01/2022 07:29

Please can I join? Don’t know my weight as not weighed myself, but definitely a size 14 on the bottom now and want to be a 12.
I’ll post my meals for accountability and your feedback!

Saturday :
Omelette with sweetcorn, and an apple
Lentil/mushroom shepherds pie with spring greens
Homemade vegetable and lentil soup with a cheese sandwich.
30 min cycle.

Yesterday:
Rye toast with peanut butter and an apple,
Cheese, beetroot and spinach sandwich. Raw pepper and roasted chickpeas.
Tofu, a few homemade potato wedges, large salad. Banana and Greek yogurt.
3 hours of waking in the woods.

I only drink black tea and water. Trying to stop snacking and no sugar. Minimally processed food all cooked from scratch.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 10/01/2022 18:24

Hi and welcome @LuckyKitty13. I thought I was on my own! Your food looks good and very healthy Looks like you are a fan of lentils and cheese! I love a cheese and beetroot sandwich. On Saturday I made a lentil, pepper, butternut squash and courgette curry which I had with cauliflower rice, a samosa and a chapatti. I'm also loving Richmond meatballs with wholewheat spaghetti and homemade tomato and basil sauce atm.

LuckyKitty13 · 10/01/2022 18:51

That sounds delicious! We are a plant based household mainly - excepting cheese and eggs (we keep our own hens so that makes me feel better!). Can’t give up the cheese!!

Todays meals:
Omelette with sweet corn and an apple.
Went to a funeral with a Buffett at the wake - ate three quarters of sandwiches, crudites, grapes, and a small slice of cake.
Dinner was Thai massaman curry with stir fry veg, no rice or noodles

Yourownpersonaljesus · 10/01/2022 20:14

Not the most exciting day for me.

B - branflakes and special k (half of each) with semi skimmed milk and a cup of tea
S - a small banana and 6 dates
L - a soft brown pitta with quorn chicken slices and reduced fat coleslaw, 6 cherry tomatoes, a portion of tyrells nut medley, a satsuma, an apple, a bliss bar
S - loads of Cadbury's Heroes!!!
D - Richmond meat free burger in a protein bagel thin and a small portion of chips

Went over my maintenance calories thanks to the chocolates. I need to step away from the chocolates!

LargeInCharge · 11/01/2022 06:45

I’m back and probably fatter…..too scared to weigh atm….maybe in a month or so.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and you’re enjoying 2022 so far.

December wasn’t particularly great for me food wise but I enjoyed it I must say.

I finally logged into mfp again and I’m getting back on the straight and narrow finishing yesterday with 1042 calories and did my steps. I didn’t feel too hungry yesterday which is weird considering I was shovelling it in for over a month.

Welcome @LuckyKitty13

I polished off dh’s remaining advent chocolates the other day so I get what you mean about chocolate 😂 @Yourownpersonaljesus

Humph. I lost a kg last week with three days of 5:2 fasting, but not strictly sticking to calorie counting in my evening meals. Anyone else doing intermittent fasting. I never would have lost the weight before but seem to have lost all willpower.

Anddd it's back on again 68.5kg. I need to seriously reign it in. Have decided to go for 8:16 as 5:2 I keep caving after eating normally and overindulging at Christmas.

Will be looking to keep my carbs low and am going shopping this afternoon if anyone has any suggestions?

Welcome @LuckyKitty13, backyard chickens sounds wonderful. I bet it's lots of work though?

LuckyKitty13 · 11/01/2022 18:40

Hello all!
No not a lot of work really - the main tie is that you have to shut them up when it’s dark every night. Luckily I work part time and we are home birds by nature so don’t tend to go away or out in the evening. But we have brilliant neighbours who shut them in for us when needed.

Todays meals:
Rye toast with peanut butter and and apple
Homemade lentil and veg soup and 2 kiwis. Didn’t fancy any bread etc with it.
Left over curry sauce with rice and stir fried veg.

LuckyKitty13 · 12/01/2022 19:22

Todays meals:
Rye toast, peanut butter, apple
Rice salad with beetroot, sweetcorn, spinach. 2x kiwis
Vegetable and egg fried rice (loads of rice to use up!!) with another apple

Yourownpersonaljesus · 12/01/2022 19:41

Hello everyone. I managed to not eat any chocolate today but did have .....takeaway pizza!!!

Here's what I ate today:
B - branflakes with semi-skimmed milk and a cup of tea
S - another cup of tea, a banana and some prunes
L - reduced fat humous, crackers, cherry tomatoes, some red pepper, a satsuma and an apple
D - half a large veggie supreme Pizza Hut pizza and some wedges.
Only went about 200 cals over today - not as bad as I thought with the pizza!

Goldilocks99 · 13/01/2022 12:51

takeaway pizza!!!
Probably not the thing to say on dieting thread but I love pizza hut. However I can't have the buffet anymore as they don't do vegan for that. Just as well haha!
I've had pesto cous cous for lunch today(Aldi bargain) and am doing a Mediterranean vegetable and tofu thing for tea.

LuckyKitty13 · 13/01/2022 19:01

Ooo what the veg and tofu thing? We love tofu here but only make a very small handful of things with it. Always keen for new ideas.

Today I’ve eaten:
Rye toast with peanut butter and an apple.
Rice salad with beetroot and red pepper, and 2 kiwis.
Omelette with cheese, mushrooms, sweetcorn, and steamed carrots on the side.
Just about to eat another apple with some Greek yoghurt.

Another cycle (I cycle to and from work, but it’s only about 30 mins per day)
