Weight loss for vegetarians

LargeInCharge · 16/04/2021 12:55

Hello!
I’ve been a vegetarian nearly all my life and I want to lose weight to be healthier (and to look better in my clothes) so I thought I’d create a space where fellow veggies (and vegans too) can share their weight loss journeys, food ideas, recipes and how they are feeling.

I started my journey on Tuesday so this is day 4 for me. My daily calorie limit is 1200.

Weight - 15st 4 (weighed on day 1)
Height - 5’ 9
Goal weight - 10st 7

How I gained weight - not exercising, eating crisps, cake, too many carbs and booze.
Positive changes - trying to be more active, ditched the crisps, cake and booze. Limiting my carbs as much as I can.

No pressure to reveal weight or anything that’s personal to you.

Good luck. 🥗🌽🥦🥬🥕🥒🫑🥑🥭🍅🍑🍓🍌🥥🫐

I did the math and mine is meant to be 75.5g a day......maybe mfp calculates less due to inactivity or age.

B - coffee, Fage with strawberries and 2 blueberry & vanilla rice cakes - 172
L - soup, 2 eggs, Fanta zero raspberry, philly milka with 2 protein ryvitas - 366
D - 3 quorn sausages, sriracha cauliflower, sugar snap peas, an orange rennie and another Fanta zero raspberry - 371
Total - 909 calories

291 spare for the sewing bee which is on soon. 🎉🐝

I think I'll add some of those protein ryvita to my next online shop - they look nice. I popped into Waitrose on my way home from work today and bought some 54 calorie cup a soups. Thought they'd be good as a snack for after school. www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/love-life-54-calories-cup-soup-tomato-basil/022843-11131-11132

LargeInCharge · 27/05/2021 07:48

They are really tasty. I like the fruit crunch ones too and the dark rye.
Let me know how the soups taste and I’ll give them a try.

Last night I had a enjoyable snack time of:
Fanta zero raspberry
2 protein ryvitas
A marmite cheddar bite
Burtons fish and chips snack
A strawberry/raspberry tea
Total 288 so my grand total for yesterday was 1197.

I have dropped off the thread for a few days - seems to be that I am a bit of a "fair-weather" poster here. I am happy to share when things are going well but if they aren't then I don't like to write it down. But I had a pretty good day yesterday and am hoping to repeat this today (at least, until 8pm when I am meeting some friends in a pub which will probably turn out to be detrimental to weightloss)

On Monday I am meeting friends for a picnic - and as the meetup is at 3pm rather than at a rational mealtime that is going to be disastrous for keeping control of calories. Any suggestions for how to tackle it? Or do I just assume that I can't keep on-track that day and just focus on enjoying it for what it is?

Undersnatch · 27/05/2021 19:32

I know what you mean Kiho but it’s also a nice place for a bit of encouragement when not doing so good!

When I’ve had social plans, I’ve tried to fast or eat low cal on other meals and ‘save up’ for the big meal. Then I find my tummy feels a bit shrunken and I can’t actually eat as much either. But also allow blow outs and eat carefully around it.

I actually had a really good week last week and then it all went wrong at the weekend, got back on the wagon on mon and still managed to lose a lb on wed so was happy. T

Today I’m a bit annoyed with myself that I accepted a chocolate biscuit at work that I didn’t really enjoy, should’ve saved that space for an evening snack! But all part of the learning curve.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 27/05/2021 21:06

I know what you mean too @KihoBebiluPute. I had a terrible day today. There was cake and sweets at work and of course I couldn't resist. I consumed over 2000 calories in total today! I'm going to get back on track tomorrow.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 27/05/2021 22:09

If I were eating at 3, I might have a filling brunch like porridge or scrambled eggs or something that would last me until 3. Then I would think about nothing but food until 3. And not talk to my friends until I had eaten some food.

KihoBebiluPute · 27/05/2021 22:54

Thanks all.

Back from the pub and I think I only had about 200cals of drinks (gin & light tonic followed by a low alcohol beer) and managed to resist scoffing crisps so that's pretty good going. Most pub visits tend to put me down by about 1000 calories!

LargeInCharge · 28/05/2021 05:09

That’s great news about resisting crisps and not over indulging @KihoBebiluPute I hope you had a good night.

Yesterday’s total for me was 1170 cals.

I enjoyed the Michael Mosley show and felt bad for them when he revealed their physical health age.

I hope everyone’s having a nice Friday.

B - coffee and 2 marmite rice cakes - 88
L - soup with a boiled egg and lentils thrown in, a coffee, 2 protein ryvitas and a laughing cow triangle- 327
D - cauliflower with sriracha, asparagus, quorn and a Fanta zero raspberry - 213
Total 774 so far. 426 left.

I’ve gone over my protein and fibre goals which I’m pleased about considering the fairly low cals.

Well today was an improvement on yesterday for me.
B - cup of tea, branflakes with unsweetened almond milk
S - 1 slice of seeded toast with clover
L - The Vegetarian Butcher Good Karma Shawarma in a wholemeal pitta with peppers and cucumber, a graze wow salted caramel cake bar
S - a very small apple, 6 dried prunes
D - sweet chilli Philadelphia on 2 slices of toast, skyr natural yoghurt with a chopped banana and a squirt of honey
Total calories: 1724 - which for once puts me in the zone on mfp.
Have a great weekend everyone - enjoy the sunshine.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 28/05/2021 22:07

I have no idea how much I ate today. Leftover Thai yellow curry with tofu for lunch - no rice or anything.
I was having a tricky day so dd and I shared a root beer ice cream float.

Then I went to visit my dad and have eaten quite a lot of his home cooked food. One poppadom, several pakora (warmed in an air fryer), a home made smallish naan and 3 types of curry - dahl, veg, mushroom.
Enough to fill half of a smallish plate, plus naan.

Undersnatch · 28/05/2021 22:40

Sorry about the tricky day superloud, hope the ice cream float helped! I work part time, 3 days, and finding those my easiest days to be disciplined. Resolved to have a better weekend this week than last, although have a social lunch on sun so I’ll allow myself one over day and work around.

Today,
No breakfast
L mushroom, spinach and tomato omelette. Wee bit squeaky bean tikka bits.
D leftover veg pasta bake
S oatly latte, kallo mini choc rice cakes, square dark choc and a teaspoon marmite peanut butter.

Bang on target WW-wise.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 29/05/2021 16:31

Today I breakfasted on leftover dahl.
Then at lunch I made an amazing discovery.
Sauerkraut seems to hit the same spot for me as crisps.
Now all I have to do is shift the nagging feeling that I should be eating sauerkraut all the time.

KihoBebiluPute · 29/05/2021 22:51

Has anyone on this thread got any recommendations of things to make with Jackfruit? I tried it for the first time today as part of a posh restaurant-at-home type ready meal and was surprised at how delicious it was. Even more surprisingly I then looked up the nutritional details and it's only 20 calories per 100g. Now I have no idea if I can recreate anything as nice, but I will be researching the question as it could really help with making delicious but low calorie vegetarian meals.

LargeInCharge · 29/05/2021 22:54

Kimchi is meant to be good too but I haven’t tried either.

Today’s total is 1149 so I may have a coffee out the last 51 calories.

Dh made pancakes today but I wasn’t tempted. I walked over 7k steps today and pancakes would have ruined my calories burnt.

OP posts:
LargeInCharge · 29/05/2021 22:55

I’ve eaten jackfruit before and the seeds are delicious washed, dried then toasted.

I know they use it on pizzas as a topping for vegans and veggies.

I bought a £5 tub in M&S recently and found it revolting unfortunately. I’ve found sauerkraut tastier although compared to crisps may struggle!!

I’ve never cooked with jackfruit but also ordered it when out and found it lovely, would also be happy with any recipes?

Undersnatch · 30/05/2021 07:49

Kimchi that is

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 30/05/2021 08:16

I like some kimchi- my favourite is biona.

With jackfruit i find some tinned brands are a bit more chemical tasting than others. It can do eith a bit of a rinse, anyway. Then anything that gets flavour into it.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 30/05/2021 08:19

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/jackfruit-bolognese-vegan-parmesan or they have a pulled jackfruit recipe too.

purplegirl13 · 30/05/2021 10:42

I've been the radar as my eating has been off-track this week, main meals ok but extra snacking going on and more ice cream than should have been consumed

I made this last night and was so tasty given the simple ingredients www.hellofresh.co.uk/recipes/halloumi-pepper-and-sweetcorn-tacos-5e456b07071c7a64525ba9bc Highly recommend it

I tried this myheartbeets.com/chickpea-cauliflower-coconut-curry/ , although I don't often cook cauliflower and left it on the stove too long and it disintegrated. Tasty though, and quick! I have a portion in the freezer.

Jackfruit - I have a tin sitting in the cupboard but never cooked it. I've had it as a bbq jackfruit topping on nachos, or in a burrito. I have this recipe earmarked to try www.thejackfruitvegan.com/mexican-pulled-jackfruit/

Kimchi - I tried it again a few weeks ago on offer www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/Product/vadasz-raw-kimchi-400g really enjoyed it, and thanks to @SuperLoudPoppingAction will give the biona one a go.

Although pricey, I am going to add it to my diet regularly. I have IBD so try to focus on increasing gut health. Will also need to try sauerkraut (had it yrs ago and wasn't keen)

purplegirl13 · 30/05/2021 10:45

Also, any suggestions for using up parsley? 100g was substituted for 30g in my grocery delivery the other day

I'll catch up on post later today but wishing you all a good day!

purplegirl13 · 30/05/2021 10:50

Actually, before I forget....does anyone here eat tempeh? I don't think I've had it in years and was wondering the differences from tofu

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 30/05/2021 12:25

I love it but it's very different from tofu.
Very creamy texture from the mycelium then but of crunch from the beans.
You can get nice smoked bacon tempeh.
Or there's a shop online called tempehtation if you want to make your own.
