How to lose weight. Tried 1000 cal a day and nothing

waterbottles · 03/04/2021 09:19

I have recorded everything I've eaten into MFP and kept carbs down to 1000 cal a day. I'm 5'6 and 11 stone 8.

I have now gone UP a qtr pound and extremely down about it

I seriously think there's something wrong with me. Dh thinks it's because I don't do any exercise but I've never done exercise and never been this fat. I've put on a stone in a month and it seems I'm gaining very quickly. I would have thought 1000 calories would be low enough to at least not gain!
Can anyone help. Not crying into my pillow right now

How long have you been on 1000 calories? If you've gained a stone in a month without changing anything on diet or activity level you should talk to your doctor first.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 03/04/2021 09:21

if you are definitely moderating your intake, and you are gaining fast, I would see a GP. Lots of medical conditions can cause weight gain.

Notavegan · 03/04/2021 09:22

How long have you been doing the diet? There can be a lag of a week or two I find. Also you may be retaining water.

waterbottles · 03/04/2021 09:25

Only two weeks. Dr being absolutely useless saying it's lockdown weight will all go away soon. They aren't being helpful for other problems though so I don't think I can't get help there.

waterbottles · 03/04/2021 09:26

@Notavegan do you think it's because it's only two weeks. It's mainly because there was a slight gain that has me so deflated now. I did try very hard I recorded everything and have even walked more than usual because I know I can't remain sedentary forever. But my exercise output is pretty bad.

OP posts:
Notavegan · 03/04/2021 09:32

It is really demotivating to see a gain. You have done well to do 2 weeks. I'm betting the scales will move soon. I find I can eat a salty meal and gain 2lbs or more of water overnight. Maybe give it another week?

weareallpassengers · 03/04/2021 09:36

Firstly exercise can very little to do weight. I suspect your calories are way too low. how old are you. .if you don't mind me asking.

freeandfierce · 03/04/2021 09:37

Why don't you measure yourself too? Sometimes I don't lose weight but do lose inches as my body adjusts. Log key measurements - upper arms, bust, waist, hips, thighs. Get DH to help if needed to get an accurate measure.

waterbottles · 03/04/2021 09:41

I'm 35
I will keep it up because I want to stop gaining and have been gaining very quickly recently but 1000 calories a day is quite depressing for me and I've cut out most carbs and it seems to really affect my mood I am feeling very down on this diet and that's before I weighed myself!

OP posts:
waterbottles · 03/04/2021 09:42

@freeandfierce I haven't thought to measure myself I will try this too thanks

I reckon 1000 calories is not enough and your body is hanging onto everything it's getting. Could you seek advice from a nutritionist? Has made a massive difference to my friend & helped her look at her food I take differently

yahyahs22 · 03/04/2021 09:44

Exercise is key.

WiseOwlOne · 03/04/2021 09:45

Keto works but it is hard imo
I got down to 9 stone and then though fuck this i need carbs
I have fasted every second day as well. That works too. But it is very hard imo
Im trying one meal a day every second day. Less extreme. Today is my one meal a day day so my plan is to not eat until an early dinner.
Touch wood ill lose a few pounds. At 5'1 every ectra pound shows up like 5 extra

safetyzone · 03/04/2021 09:45

You should eat at least 1200, if not more. 1000 is not sustainable and will make you feel worse. Walking more is great for your health. I still think you should see a doctor if you have gained the weight so suddenly. It is probably water retention but I'd be very careful with that.

weareallpassengers · 03/04/2021 09:46

I don't mean to be rude but if you feel like that you won't be able to sustain it. others things will affect weight loss. stress levels, sleep quality, water intake, and your calorie intake is way too low.

WiseOwlOne · 03/04/2021 09:47

Agree with this. My cals probably go like 700, 1300, 700, 1300, 700
Notavegan · 03/04/2021 09:50

I agree seeing a nutritionist / dietician might help review what you are eating and to plan your diet to be long term sustainable. 1000 calories could still be just junk and you havnt really said if you are eating veggies etc rather than 10 packets of crisps. I'm sure you are not eating just crisps op, just an example.

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 03/04/2021 09:56

With weight loss there is often a lag. It doesn’t always come off how you would expect—sometimes I lose nothing for 2 eeeks, then 3 weeks’ worth of loss in a day. Then nothing fir 2 weeks, etc

DianaT1969 · 03/04/2021 09:57

Out of interest, why are you sedentary? It seems strange for someone your age. Unless you have mobility issues?

waterbottles · 03/04/2021 10:11

@weareallpassengers I am not easily offended and I'd rather honesty!
Maybe I'm being impatient.

I do have a lot of stress on atm.
@DianaT1969 I live rurally and wfh. I have been walking in the last two weeks where I can but I work a lot and this is sitting on my bum on calls most days and for the school run I drive as it's far away so I don't really get much exercise in naturally.

I also get very tired a lot which is why I contacted my gp to say I'm gaining a lot of weight and I'm so tired every day but they said to eat fruit and veg and lockdown is causing problems for so many people but it will be over soon and I can come in when this is all over Hmm. They still haven't reopened face to face app. yet And I feel like I'm being fobbed off on the phone.

It's only the last couple of years I've ballooned. I never struggled with my weight before I always maintained around the 10 stone mark without doing anything extra.

I'm doing Noom at the moment- it's really working for me. Have lost half a stone in just over one month - I have done it properly but even with that there have been weeks with no weight loss. They give lots of explanations for why that is. I have had lots of false starts with diets and given up after week 2. This is the first time I've properly kept going and I feel like I'm changing my relationship with food too.

Good luck! X

WeALLdeferTOtheDOG · 03/04/2021 10:18

I meant to say, 1000 calories is way too low. Ur body will stop losing weight because it'll adjust ur metabolism and u will find it hard to lose the pounds. Eat more and go for slow and steady weight loss.

waterbottles · 03/04/2021 10:32

@weareallpassengers I was actually trying to see how low I have to go to lose weight. Before this I was eating 1.5 calories and still gaining so I've gone down to 1k to see if 1.5 k is too much rather than have this forever but after gaining yet again it's hard to not accept I'm going to gain forever.

I haven't heard of noom I will look at that thanks

OP posts:
FourForYouGlenCoco · 03/04/2021 10:44

@waterbottles you need a thyroid check I think. Don’t be fobbed off, ask to speak to another GP if need be. And in the meantime, look up hypothyroid symptoms and see if it fits.

CodMouth · 03/04/2021 10:48

If the human body could “hang onto” calories, starvation wouldn’t exist and neither would anorexics.

Two weeks isn’t a long time to expect results. You may also be building muscle due to you exercising which could explain the weight gain.

Measure your body as well as weighing.
