How to lose weight. Tried 1000 cal a day and nothing

waterbottles · 03/04/2021 09:19

I have recorded everything I've eaten into MFP and kept carbs down to 1000 cal a day. I'm 5'6 and 11 stone 8.

I have now gone UP a qtr pound and extremely down about it

I seriously think there's something wrong with me. Dh thinks it's because I don't do any exercise but I've never done exercise and never been this fat. I've put on a stone in a month and it seems I'm gaining very quickly. I would have thought 1000 calories would be low enough to at least not gain!
Can anyone help. Not crying into my pillow right now

2 weeks isn’t long to see much of a change I’d keep going but I’d increase your calories to at least 1200 so it’s more sustainable and so you don’t feel deprived and end up eating more. I’m on 1200 and I’ve lost 2 stone since January. I think I’d actually lose less if I was on fewer calories as I’d have no energy and end up moving a lot less but maybe that’s just me!

waterbottles · 04/04/2021 09:27

I will try 1000 for another week to see if anything moves and then raise it if I can't manage on it. Even though it's depressing I'm not really any more tired than I usually am.

I've now dug out my health insurance documents from work and will see if I can get any help with that and I've ordered a treadmill (!) because having dc means can't really get out as often as I'd like to after work so hopefully I might lose weight one way or another this year!

What height are you? Unless you are quite short 1000 calories a day is very little. I'm 5'1" so that wouldn't be a bad amount for me to eat if I was sedentary and wanted to lose weight but if you are taller, maybe reconsider. The whole thing about your body holding onto calories because it thinks you are starving is obviously bullshit but unsustainable changes won't help longterm.

Next, women's weight fluctuates throughout the month. Some days I wake up several pounds heavier than I was the day before. It also changes throughout the day. So you need to be basing your weight pattern over longer than two weeks and get into the habit of weighing yourself at a similar time of day. In the morning, before breakfast but after you poop is ideal but not always possible.

Are you accounting for what you are drinking? Milk, juice and most certainly alcohol all contain calories. And alcohol needs to be cleared by your liver which slows weightloss. What are you eating? While calories in-calories out, will always be the ultimate determinant of weight loss/maintenance/gain, what you eat does matter. The body clears whole foods much more easily, lots of fresh fruit and veg, natural protein and healthy fat will not only help you feel more sated but can speed up the weightloss process. If you eat dairy avoid low-fat like the plague and only consume whole milk, yoghurt, cheese, etc. The low-fat shite is more highly processed and contains more unnaturally occurring sugar.

Thanks. Yes I record everything but I only drink water and black coffee so I don't think that's so bad. I haven't had alcohol since last year as only drink socially and have no social life anymore thanks to lockdown ha!

I have been weighing everything and scanning all foods. I do eat cheese but I've even been buying slices which I don't normally do so it's easier to record the calories but I don't eat much fruit I try to eat veg with dinner though.

I think I am just very disappointed having felt like I'd tried so hard and to have gained was just hard to take but I will try again. I already went down to 1.5k and was still gaining. I'm 5'6. I used to eat a lot more and not gain but I'm wondering if I'm just moving less than I used to because of lockdown although I didn't do any exercise before lockdown tbh. But I am probably moving overall less throughout the day.

You've hit your mid 30's. That's the age I started holding on to weight. It just gradually began to creep upwards.

If you're not eating much in the way of carbs and are still bloated then you need to see your GP to rule out anything sinister.

I find some of your language quite dramatically emotive. Based on the info in your first post, your BMI is 26.15 so you are not very overweight. Losing 8lbs would put you in the healthy BMI range. If you've put on a stone so quickly, it's likely to be due to water retention. There are several health problems that can cause this but I'm wondering how accurate your scales are. If you're sure they're reading correctly, you do need medical advice. Have you tried calling 111 or the Askmygp service?
I've lost 5 stone over the last 21 months, by eating less. The best diet advice ever is this; eat food, not too much, mostly plants. You haven't really said what you're eating, but even adding lots of salt to your food can cause water retention and prevent weight loss. Exercise, in my experience, doesn't do much to help weight loss but it does make you feel much better, which helps to stick to a diet. Eating mostly fruit and veg, a bit of protein, not too much fat or carbs, is the way I've done it.
I also think you should give it a bit more time. I know in September last year my weight didn't change all month, even though I was sticking to my diet, then it started going down again. Keep trying but also try being kinder to yourself. Don't think of yourself as obese, you're not.

Not the exact same but when I started driving in my late 30s, I went from slightly overweight to obese in a couple of years. There was no other change in my life, I just stopped moving about as much. A friend I was talking to recently who was another late driver said the same thing happened to her. Even without exercising regularly walking everywhere was clearly enough movement to stop my weight gain building too quickly. Losing that made it spiral. Losing your normal movement very likely is making a difference.

waterbottles · 04/04/2021 12:29

Thanks. I have been low carb for two weeks and stayed under 30g except for the odd few days of under 50g.
I eat meat and cheese and dinners have been things like a chicken breast and spinach because I don't know how to stay under 1000 calories without eating hardly anything

I don't add salt to my food but I imagine it's in the things I'm eating. I actually haven't 'cooked' anything from scratch I've mainly bought in loads of chicken breasts that I stick in the oven and eat with heated frozen spinach. For lunch I'll eat omelette or a boiled egg with asparagus. I even weight the butter I fry it in! But as some pp have said I'm probably being impatient as well.

I do need to up my exercise. There's no excuse today as I'm not working. So I'm hoping to lug myself outdoors in the freezing cold.
