How much weight have you gained in the last year?

I had a failed IVF just before lockdown started. So taking my weight from before that started, the hormone / depression weight and then lockdowns and a largely sedentary lifestyle as a result of WFH sometimes 50 hours a week I’ve gained 2.5 stone 😫

It’s at the point where I’m now embarrassed to see anyone and need to use the next couple of months to do something about it. I have stabilised at my current weight since November, which is a mini victory. But my diet is awful and I find it tough to motivate myself to exercise. I am so bored of walking around the local area and it’s not particularly safe either.

Anyone else feeling the same way and feeling anxious about the world opening up again?

How much is it realistic to lose by mid May??

You've no chance if you don't address this honestly and directly.

I have a big appetite and that's that. So I shop seperately for myself, buying healthiler ingredients for quick meals and snacks. I don't let myself go hungry.

I love the idea of going for walks, but I don't do it. I have weights at home, and use them daily. I have a mini trampoline, good for bouncing, walking on, doing step-ups on. I put music on or watch TV whilst I'm on it. I keep them in the living room which is fine as I don't have visitors - if they're tucked away in a cupboard or another room, then I won't use them.

My motivation is rubbish so, I get how you feel. If I knew I wouldn't gain weight and ruin my health, I'd happily much on savoury snacks and sit on my backside for ages. But that's not the case so in terms of paying attention to what I eat, and exercise levels, it's got to be done.

I suppose I'm a lazy exerciser compared to some but my fitness levels and BMI are fine. I will never take things to the extreme, too joyless for me.

You could download NHS weight loss apps, good for a bit of motivation. & it's nice exercising at home, no-one to see you🙂 God knows what I look like when I'm jumping around.

(DSis gained hormone weight after failed IVF, it's a bugger to lose but she has. Not as low as her previous weight but she's toned and fit)

Good luck

Youngatheart00 · 23/02/2021 21:57

Yes the IVF weight is a bitch. In total after 3 failed cycles I’m nearly 4 stone heavier than when I started this. I was very slim 3 years ago!

I know I need to address the diet. I’m still battling underlying depression I think. I find it hard to look after myself and cook myself nutritious meals. I used to be much better

If your diet is awful, and you can't imagine it changing drastically, you need to move more.
I've lost 7lbs since the start of this year, my diet isn't brilliant and I refuse to give up chocolate and cakes as I love treating myself to them, plus there is nothing else to look forward to right now. Therefore I resigned myself to the fact I have to exercise.

I run 4-5 times a week, walk as much as I can, and do a different form of exercise on non-running days.
(I work full time from home and have a young child who needs schooling, so it's not as if I'm not working and have loads of time on my hands). I'm also intermittent fasting using the 16:8 method so at least I only have an 8 hour window to eat within.

If I didn't force myself do this, I'd gain weight 🤷🏻‍♀️ However, now I'm into the swing of it, I actually enjoy it and wouldn't say I have to force myself anymore

Gardenvisits · 23/02/2021 21:59

I’ve put back on the stone I lost the year before Hmm. Probably lucky I lost it the year before otherwise I’d have put on another one!

Youngatheart00 · 23/02/2021 21:59

I think the intermittent fasting is a good shout. At least if I could restrict the crap to 8 hours of a day! I used to run/jog. I feel too big to do that now even though I’m ‘only’ about a size 16. All my exercise kit is too small. Perhaps an excuse for a splurge

I just feel really, really ashamed about the gain. Everyone seems to joke about lockdown weight gain but when I see people’s photos on social media or their faces over zoom no one seems to have changed??!!

I was overweight before the pandemic. Lost 20lbs during lockdown 1. Met DP over the summer and gained most of it back, then the rest back at Christmas. Now I'm lockdown 3 and motivation is zero. I'm pretty much the same weight I started at. I need to lose 3 stone to have a healthy BMI. I want to lose 2 stone by mid June.

MistakenAgain · 23/02/2021 22:03

I put on 1.5 stone in ice cream. Fortunately with the promise of the end of lockdown I lost it. I still have another 1.5 to lose.

To be honest the first stone or so is not that hard to lose. I found just be cutting out the worst of it, walking more and some intermittent fasting I was able to lose a stone. It then tends to plateau and a new strategy is needed.

Northernsoullover · 23/02/2021 22:04

2 frickin stone. I've had enough. I've made small changes to my diet and I'm hell bent on doing my 10 000 steps a day now.
I know its meant to be 80% diet and 20% exercise but as my diet didn't change (my activity flat lined) I'm trying to exercise first. I'm talking some days 1500 steps Blush.

greendress789 · 23/02/2021 22:04

@Youngatheart00 I feel you. 5th failed cycles in 4 years and 2 stone heavier. Fancy being diet buddies?

MistakenAgain · 23/02/2021 22:07

I usually like to cook but cba at the moment and I find a mediterranean pickey style lunch is good. Lots of different textures and crunches.

For dinners tray bakes are amazing e.g. The Roasting Tin cook books. Cooking but not cooking. Also eating a lot of jacket potatoes!

Youngatheart00 · 23/02/2021 22:08

Well done to those who have gained and lost - you can just pretend it never happened!

@greendress789 I completely feel for you, we are considering a 4th cycle but right now my focus needs to be on my health and weight. I don’t want to get too deep but I really feel failed IVF and infertility in general does something negative to your own self worth and body image like nothing else. Happy to be buddies and stay accountable on here!

Activity is a good start. My average step count for the last year is 2600 steps a day. That’s pathetic isn’t it, it’s no wonder I’m huge.

You definitely aren't too big! Get over to the Exercise board and follow the C25K threads, maybe that would work for you? It's as good a time as any
Miseryl · 23/02/2021 22:13

Ive managed to lose 1.5 stones since last March- very slow progress with lots of ups and downs.

greendress789 · 23/02/2021 22:27

@Youngatheart00 I totally agree. It takes you to a deep dark place 😪😪😪

Youngatheart00 · 23/02/2021 22:30

To those who have lost weight during lockdown, I’m utterly astounded (and very envious) at your self control and self discipline!

OP posts:
greendress789 · 23/02/2021 22:34

@Youngatheart00 why don't you start a diet thread in infertility or weight loss section?

greendress789 · 23/02/2021 22:36

To keep in touch I mean xx

Faith50 · 23/02/2021 22:37

I have maintained my weight during lockdown by reducing my food intake and walking.

Recently I have been drinking lots of water and cut out carbohydrates with my evening meal. I eat carbs with lunch only.

I am also doing the 16:8 fast as I want to lose a stone to be in the middle of the NHS recommended ideal weight range. I am currently nearer the top end.

SnoopyMcLoopy · 23/02/2021 22:49

I've lost 7kg in 6 weeks doing 16:8 and fast 800. It's been really easy to stick to. There are a couple of recipe books which are great. I also stopped driving to work and walk there and back at least 4 times a week (1hr total).

You can do it!

Youngatheart00 · 23/02/2021 22:56

@greendress789 might just use this one!

I feel like I don’t really want to bring the Infertility board down with my tales of failure 😫 also wouldn’t want to put anyone else off doing IVF as a lot of people are more successful!

Right...it’s a basic eat less / move more from tomorrow. Starting weight, 14st

doadeer · 23/02/2021 23:04

Just want to say good luck OP!

For me it's hugely motivating seeing weight come off and I feel inspired to keep going.

I've lost 1.5 stone since lockdown began and I can't do too much exercise as I have chronic pain. I try to get out every day with my toddler and I do 3 hard pilates sessions a week. For me it was figuring out my vices then deciding how to tackle them.
