I'm so hungry I could cry

I'm losing weight (hurrah) but have given up breakfast. It's usually ok - I have an early lunch of home made veg and lentil soup at around 12.30 - but today I am so hungry I could cry. I'm fed up. I want to eat chocolate until it comes out of my ears. And follow it with cheese.

Give me your best distraction techniques for days like this.

LH1987 you sound like me. I could live on cheese!

Fasting has been proven to be excellent at reversing type 2 diabetes. It's horses for courses. Weight loss always amounts to th same thing - eat less calories than you need to maintain your current weight. I find missing a meal makes that easier for me. I don't have to count every calorie.

drspouse · 30/01/2021 16:52

Don't give up meals?

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2021 16:58

Thank you ImperfectTents.

That's it really - I am reducing my total calories count over each 24 hour period, whilst still eating a healthy, varied, largely plant based diet.

It's very rare that a lack of breakfast bothers me...and I'm sort of sorry I commented at a weak moment. Totally back on track now, all is well, I'm fit, healthy and losing weight every week. Hurrah!

Hey op. I feel you here! I finally reached my limit and weighed myself on Tuesday and was horrified. I have stuck to 1200 all week and have done 30 minutes exercise a day. Today I am struggling with it being a weekend (normally a 'treat' day) and my h and dd eating popcorn/crisps/sweets in front of a film. I did go for a walk this morning and I am within my calories, it's just depressing isn't it, constantly thinking about food !

AprilThe8th · 30/01/2021 17:09

Propercorn salted popcorn 44 calories per bag

IEat · 30/01/2021 17:24

Eat breakfast lunch and dinner and snack on fruit and drink plenty why starve yourself to point of being hungry

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2021 17:38

Because if I'm not a bit hungry (at least in that hour before a meal) I'm not losing weight. And fruit has a lot of calories. I prefer vegetables!

Some days are easier than others. Today has been easy even though my food intake hasn't changed.

JKRismyhero hang on in there.

Yes, veg/salad is better than fruit. Most fruit is quite high carb.

I'd be eating a couple of decent meals a day. cooked from scratch, including plenty of veg/salad, and also enough fat to keep you full for long enough.

If you do need a snack then something like cheese and cucumber (my favourite!) or some full fat plain Greek yoghurt would be good. Something that doesn't push your blood sugar up too high and then cause you to be hungry again a couple of hours later. Also, drinking plenty of water helps.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2021 17:56

I always drink a lot of water as I have dodgy kidneys and agree about the cheese snack.
My favourite is a thin slice of Emmenthal (those holes must reduce the calorie count!) which I have to share with the cat (who is obviously helping me) and a few almonds. Lovely!

The lunchtime soup has nine veg in it, and the evening meal at least another three, often more. I think that's quite a lot of vegetables.

Not according to the pre-diabetes programme I'm currently on, it isn't.

The most important thing is to keep your blood sugars steady and you don't achieve that by fasting.

LH1987 · 30/01/2021 18:09

@FuzzyPuffling, that sounds good to me, I could easily stop eating at around 8pm, that way I could have a little snack at about 7.45 and not eat till lunch in the morning.

For what it’s worth, I do think you need to be hungry to have any kind of effective weight loss.

I find it fascinating that people on Mumsnet feel the need to be critical of someone else’s diet. Is the skipping of breakfast an offensive matter? 😂

devildeepbluesea · 30/01/2021 18:10

@Redannie118

That diet sounds horrendous and super unhealthy. My DH was borderline diabetic and four stone overweight. GP said the most important thing to do is balance out blood sugars and eat regularly. DH started a low carb/ high protien mediterean style diet. 5 small meals a day, but breakfast is vital. Lots of oats, good protiens like beans, pulses and fish lower carbs but still some. He lost 4 stone in six months and has kept it off. He sleeps better and his skin condition has totally cleared. But most importantly he is no longer pre diabetic. Sorry but you are starving yourself. Your blood sugars must be awful snd this is really bad for you. As you have gone into starvation mode your body will just store the weight as fat as soon as you start eating normally again. Why would you want to be this miserable when youcould follow a healthy diet where you could lose as much weight and not be hungry ????
So much wrong with this post. But for starters, "starvation mode" - utter bollocks and has been roundly disproved as a thing.
SoMuchToBits · 30/01/2021 18:15

Sounds like you're doing well with the veg and water!

The good thing is, you're doing something to shift the flab. I don't care what people look like, but being overweight puts a strain on your body in so many ways anyway, and that's even more important now we know that being overweight is a risk factor in being more unwell with Covid.

Obesity costs the NHS a lot of money too, so well done for doing something about it. Smile

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2021 18:22

For the record I'm not pre diabetic at all. My HBA1c is completely and utterly fine! I'm just a stone overweight! And shifting it.

Out of interest I read a bit of a "bariatric surgery" thread, in which people had had gastric sleeves etc and several were saying that after initial few weeks of big weight loss they were settling at 1-2 lbs per week. I'm doing that without surgery, thank goodness. (I'm not knocking it at all, just saying that the results are surprisingly similar)

Be careful skipping breakfast, I did it for years and now have excruciating gallstones. Apparently it’s a factor. Not judging as it worked for me weight wise but if I could go back I’d definitely eat breakfast, not be quite as thin and not be in pain! Not sure how much excercise you currently do but if you’re able to increase it you could add breakfast back in with no weight gain.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2021 19:06

I do a walk a day - between 2 and 3 miles with some steep hills and at a brisk pace. In better weather and better times I also bodyboard. I'm in my early 60s, so won't be running marathons any time soon (although I did in my 30s). It's not easily increased at the moment.
