I'm so hungry I could cry

I'm losing weight (hurrah) but have given up breakfast. It's usually ok - I have an early lunch of home made veg and lentil soup at around 12.30 - but today I am so hungry I could cry. I'm fed up. I want to eat chocolate until it comes out of my ears. And follow it with cheese.

Give me your best distraction techniques for days like this.

You feel bad about eating prunes? Why?

Letting yourself become so hungry you’re wanting to eat a truck full of dairy milks is tipping yourself into danger territory you need to stay satiated with low calorie but high protein / fibre foods otherwise you’ll crash and burn.

ImperfectTents · 29/01/2021 16:59

I am doing the 16:8 thing so I am similar to you. I have coffee in the morning but otherwise grit my teeth TIL lunch and have a light lunch. I eat carrot and hummous or an apple to get me through to dinner when I have a normal/greedy meal. Bit of a bore but it is working I have lost 13lbs and counting.

ImperfectTents · 29/01/2021 17:00

I distract myself by trying on clothes to see what fits again

FuzzyPuffling · 29/01/2021 17:06

Definitely no period! (I'm too old for that!)

I would eat all day given the chance (my downfall) so I need to go without snacking. I think that when I reach my goal weight, no snacking might help to keep me there.

ImperfectTents very much snap. I have coffees in the morning and I hope that sees me through to soup time. Proper meal before 6pm then a good long fast. I read a Van Tulleken book and he said no breakfast was absolutely fine.

A couple of years ago I lost 2.5 stone, but due to life circumstances (bereavement and shielding) I put almost two back on again. This time round I aim to lose two stone and have lost one. Halfway there!

A stone well done! It is a bore but if it means I don't have to buy a completely new 'big' set of clothes it is worth it.

FuzzyPuffling · 29/01/2021 18:07

Thank you - it's about the same as you!

MY BMI is officially 27.5 now, but I love the "Smart BMI" calculator which is a lot kinder and takes other factors into account.

I made myself a blouse last week (silk satin, sort of 40s style - it was a swine, the fabric was so slippery., but it kept me busy!) and when I fitted it, it was a bit big. I may add extra darts!

Your mistake here is giving up breakfast. Google some nice low-fat breakfasts and re-jig your daily calories accordingly.

FuzzyPuffling · 29/01/2021 21:02

No, giving up breakfast works for me. Mostly I am hungrier in the evenings so save a protein snack for after dinner. When I ate a slice of toast for breakfast, I felt just as hungry as when I've had nothing.

SoMuchToBits · 29/01/2021 21:08

No breakfast is fine. I usually only eat 2 meals a day (lunch and dinner) although do have a mid morning snack (cheese and cucumber) on days I'm working, as I start very early.

I eat low carb though, with relatively high fat. This means I don't get hungry, the 2 meals a day keep me well satisfied.

Clean your teeth

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2021 08:17

I need to keep busy
Boredom or faffing makes me think about food more. I didn't think about food at all last evening as I was involved in online choir practice.
Weigh in tomorrow. 😮

Get some Playmobil out! That will keep you busy... Wink

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2021 10:22

I wish I had some. I need a playmo slimming class for motivation!

Here's Yvette doing some exercise to keep you motivated! Smile

MandalaYogaTapestry · 30/01/2021 10:57

Stop eating sugar and limit bread. That's the only thing that helped me keep cravings at bay. You can eat anything else.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2021 14:31

Well done Yvette! (And thank you SoMuch) I've been for my daily walk in the rain.

I don't eat bread. But today I am doing fine.

That diet sounds horrendous and super unhealthy. My DH was borderline diabetic and four stone overweight. GP said the most important thing to do is balance out blood sugars and eat regularly. DH started a low carb/ high protien mediterean style diet. 5 small meals a day, but breakfast is vital. Lots of oats, good protiens like beans, pulses and fish lower carbs but still some. He lost 4 stone in six months and has kept it off. He sleeps better and his skin condition has totally cleared. But most importantly he is no longer pre diabetic. Sorry but you are starving yourself. Your blood sugars must be awful snd this is really bad for you. As you have gone into starvation mode your body will just store the weight as fat as soon as you start eating normally again. Why would you want to be this miserable when youcould follow a healthy diet where you could lose as much weight and not be hungry ????

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 30/01/2021 14:48

Glass of water

Hm2020 · 30/01/2021 14:53

I drink constant peppermint tea two teabags in one cup but sometimes give myself a day off when I’m feeling like that and even when I’ve had one day eating probably more then 1800 kcal it hasn’t actually made a difference and I still seem to lose the same amount! Good luck whatever u do it’s hard but so worth it when u see them scales Smile

LH1987 · 30/01/2021 15:05

I find I’m not hungry at all at breakfast, so why eat? I really enjoy a small lunch and a reasonable dinner and I have enough calories left over for a small snack in the evening like cheese on crackers etc.

SoMuchToBits · 30/01/2021 15:05

I would also go with low carb, moderate protein, higher fat. That way you won't keep getting hungry as your blood sugar will level out. It's the way I eat all the time now.

I don't think it matters whether you eat 2 or 3 meals a day though. Lots of good advice on the Low carb bootcamp threads if you do want to follow this way of eating. I did it initially to lose some weight a few years ago, but found it also helped get rid of my joint pain and bloating, so stick with it now.

That's fab! but actually your assertion that eating 5 small meals a day is better often disputed.
FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2021 15:32

Blimey redannie could you get more judgemental? My diet is extremely healthy..masses of veg, low sugar, very varied.
I just don't eat it first thing in the morning!

I'm glad your plan worked for you, but apart from the occasional off day, mine is working fine for me.

LH1987 · 30/01/2021 15:56

@FuzzyPuffling, what time do you stop eating the evening? If you don’t mind me asking. I’ve been looking up intermittent fasting and since I am never hungry in the morning and the worst of my bad eating is in the evening, I think it might be good for me.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2021 16:06

I have lunch at 12.30, dinner at 5.30 and a snack of cheese and nuts around 7pm.

But I do go to bed early (usually going to sleep around 10, so there's not a massive amount of evening to fill).

Dinner is a decent meal though, proper food. Tonight will be a veggie curry and rice. It's worth it for me to "save" calories for the evening. It's not like I'm living on shakes...more like broccoli!
