What do you have for breakfast when trying to lose weight?

I’m trying to lose some residual post-pregnancy weight and I’m a bit stuck on what to have for breakfast. I want to move away from cereals (convenient to eat with a baby around but not great) but I can’t have eggs (intolerance to yokes), I find porridge really blah and toast doesn’t really fill me up.

Any suggestions would be welcome as I’m really struggling. I’m currently at home on mat leave so I can do cooked breakfasts so they don’t need to be necessarily convenient/cold breakfasts.

To my shame I’m also not a fan of most fruit (I’m working on that though)

Greek yoghurt with blueberries and low sugar granola?

NeurologicallySpeaking · 17/01/2021 11:14

Overnight Bircher muesli? I'm not a fan but DH loves it.

Caramel81 · 17/01/2021 11:15

I have a protein yogurt (most have around 20g of protein in) with some blueberries or raspberries on top and some mixed seeds. Or I’ll have an egg white omelette with smoked salmon or a homemade smoothie with high protein things in it like Greek yogurt and peanut butter.
None of them excite me but they fill me up enough until late morning where I’ll have a small snack before lunch.

Mushrooms on toast. I stir through tarragon and cream cheese

CarlottaValdez · 17/01/2021 11:16

I do 18:6 so nothing! So that’s nice and easy - probably not suitable if you’re breastfeeding

MissyB1 · 17/01/2021 11:17

I don’t. I fast until midday, I’m doing 16/8.

Can you eat the egg whites? I sometimes do a batch of egg muffins made with eggs, cottage cheese, sliced ham (or quorn ham) and finely diced veg, pour into a muffin tin and bake in the oven. They can be reheated in the microwave and frozen too.

Linda McCartney sausages

faysieb · 17/01/2021 11:21

All the below come in about 300 cals

Couple of crumpets with marmite
Hash brown waffles, baked Parma ham (in lieu of bacon) and beans
Frozen crossiant with ham and slice of cheese
Toasted banana sandwich
Granola, yogurt and blueberries
Mushrooms with Philadelphia on toast

ForestYeti · 17/01/2021 11:21

Plant based yoghurt (alpro) with fruit, honey and a sprinkling of oats

minipie · 17/01/2021 11:21

Coffee.

I have a big slice of sourdough with about 100g of smashed avo (smashed with lime, salt and chilli flakes), a fried egg, 2 slices of bacon baked in the oven and 2 chopped cherry tomatoes. You could do egg white instead of full egg or fried mushrooms or extra bacon. Keep it filling. I have that with a big pot of tea that gives me about 3 cups that I have with semi skimmed milk. I love that meal so have that every single day and it really fills me up. I don't eat breakfast until around 11.30 though and only have hot water before that. I then have around 100cal of something sweet like a KitKat at around 3pm and then about 500cals worth of whatever I want for dinner. No other snacks. On one weekend day I have whatever I fancy for my dinner - a takeaway and any pudding and as much of it as I feel like, no guilt. I find the 2 meals a day approach means my meals are more satisfying, and I don't eat any diet food like low fat versions or cooking spray. I used to do 3 low calorie meals and found it hard to stick to because they always felt a bit sad.

I've lost 3 stone in the last 9 months doing this. I have occasional lapses (usually consisting of a drunk night followed by about a week of hangover style eating 😂, plus Christmas and birthday week eating what I want), run about 10k a week on average, go for a 2 hour ish walk once a week and do one zumba class a week, so no mega exercising. I'm 38, I work full time in a desk job, I'm 5ft 8 and my starting weight was 13.5st. I also track everything except my weekend blow out in my fitness pal.

I know you didn't ask for all that info but just wanted to share because it's the first time I've found a way of eating that I've been able to stick to, where I've lost all the weight I wanted and where it's stayed off. Good luck!

What cereal do you have?
I think a high fibre, low sugar cereal is a pretty good option for weight loss personally, and it seems to suit your routine. Shreddies and skimmed milk?

AlwaysLatte · 17/01/2021 11:50

Nothing - I wait until lunch.

Thecherryontheverytop · 17/01/2021 11:51

Avocado egg and smoked salmon on wholemeal toast

faffmaff · 17/01/2021 11:53

Rice cakes with peanut butter and banana

MichelleofzeResistance · 17/01/2021 11:59

Nothing. Sigh. But then I gain weight if I even look sidewise at a carb.

Salmon, ham or cucumber if I get desperate before lunch.

LaBellina · 17/01/2021 12:01

Overnight oats with soy milk, cinnamon and a tiny teaspoon of honey.

Hm2020 · 17/01/2021 12:03

Skinny latte and a banana but I’ve had a young baby and I couldn’t have done that then don’t be hard on yourself having a little ones hard enoughSmile

Babykoala1 · 17/01/2021 12:03

When losing weight I skip breakfast because I find it a bit blah and would rather have more calories to use for lunch and dinner but I understand that's not suitable for everyone. If I were you I'd have something like avocado on wholemeal toast or a turkey bacon sandwich. I'd also probably switch it up some days and have low sugar muesli/cereal and add sweetener for taste

dorothysredshoes · 17/01/2021 12:06

I'm also doing 16:8, so no breakfast. When I'm at work will have a snack 10.30 ish like a banana then have 2 eggs on sourdough for lunch, normal tea and then don't eat in the evening. It's worked well for me and has made my appetite much more controllable. Good luck.

TheSmallAssassin · 17/01/2021 12:08

Why do you want to move away from cereal? It doesn't sound like much else works for you, though overnight oats is probably worth trying. Just make sure you go for a lower sugar, higher fibre one and measure out the recommended amount, because it's really easy to have too much by eye!

ageingdisgracefully · 17/01/2021 12:11

Nothing except a cup of tea with a splash of milk and a tiny bit of half spoon.

I can't look at breakfast sideways and haven't done for 40 yearsSad- if I DO eat it I can't seem to stop eating for the rest of the day.

You're breastfeeding though so burning calories that way.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 17/01/2021 12:13

I do porridge oats topped with fruit (whatever fruit you DO like). Soak in milk and leave in the fridge overnight. Then the next morning top it with seeds (toasted pumpkins seeds are lovely) or nuts.

I often use apple and sultana in mine and add loads of cinnamon. Tastes a bit like apple crumble, particularly if you top it with toasted flaked almonds.

Or wholemeal toast with avocado on.
