Can someone tell me why...

I have not lost any weight.
For the last 6 weeks, I have been actively attending (yes, and participating) in Aqua aerobics for five one hour sessions a week and swimming for two sessions a week (total of 2 & 1/2 hours) and have not lost one pound in weight. I am also walking four extra miles a day. All on top of my 'normal' activities.
I eat healthily, have not upped my food intake - if anything it has actually gone down.

Problem with thyroid maybe ? Sorry I'm not sure of the spelling ! Maybe you need to see your gp ?

Joash · 24/10/2007 14:10

Nope - no medical problems whatsoever. This has been going on for years. I dont eat any processed food - everything made from scratch. Don't eat (actully dont even buy them) biccy's of cakes and things, due to a nut allergy. Haven't had any form of chips for almost three years, never eat fried food, only skimmed milk for well over a decade, skinless chicken, etc for around 6 years, dont eat fatty meat, no crisps, etc. No sugar for over 30 years
This is really p**ing me off now!!!

exercise builds muscle and muscle wieghs more than fat but i can see how after 6 weeks you would be getting a bit fed up.

I came off a liquid diet 2 months ago having lost wieght that way and it has taken me 2 months before i have lost anyhting else through exercise and healthy eating - so although this is different to your situation i do kno how frustrtaing that can be, i wopuld go to the gp and check up just in case its somthing simple

you say you eat healthily and thats you probably ate less in that 6 weeks so that shouldnt be a problem but i have found it helps me to write down what i eat and maybe see patterns of foods making you bloated etc .....?

gingernutlover · 24/10/2007 14:16

just a thought anyway, even healthy foods dont all suit everyone

Joash · 24/10/2007 14:18

Yep - I know about the muscle v fat thing. Done the whole diary thing, dont eat between meals, dont eat unless i am hungry, etc. DOne the GP thing (for perhaps the thousandth time last week) there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why I should remain bloody fat!!!

OP posts:
Joash · 24/10/2007 14:19

and I don't actually ever get bloated - not for some years now.

maisemor · 24/10/2007 14:20

Don't mean to be rude, but do you have anything to lose (weightwise)? You just sound so healthy.

Joash · 24/10/2007 14:21

My DH weighs at least 10 stones less than me, maybe even more (yep, you haven't misread that) and becasue of his job, he is fit. Even he was commenting last night that he actually finds it difficult to keep up with me in the swimming thing now as I'm too fast for him.
I am getting fitter, just not thinnner.(also increasingly p**d off).

Loads to lose - one very fat woman here

Joash · 24/10/2007 14:23

I want to lose some bloody weight, I want to be able to buy clothes from 'normal' shops (mainly because they're very cheap) but mainly, I want to make sure I'm around to carry on bringing up GS - aaarrgghhh!!!

maisemor · 24/10/2007 14:24

I think you need to give it more time then. Remember if you try to lose weight the right way (healthy eating and exercising, exactly what you are doing) it takes a lot longer however it should also stay off.
You have given it 6 weeks you say? I would give it at least 6 months and if in that time you have lost nothing then I would start to seriously wonder (and maybe take a pregnancy test )

zippitippitoes · 24/10/2007 14:25

all you can do is add more exercise (i was up tp 5 hours per day at one point) and eat less it will happen eventually

also try green tea supplements

maisemor · 24/10/2007 14:26

I am doing pretty much the same as you and have only lost 1 kg over the last 6 weeks (I should really lose around 15kg). Which to some is not a lot but I can actually run up the stairs again without collapsing at the top.

zippitippitoes · 24/10/2007 14:27

i found it really slow to start with but you just have to persevere and keep doing more and eating less until it works

Joash · 24/10/2007 14:28

maisemor - i would have loved to have lost 1/2 a KG (well done you BTW) and PLEASE do not scare me with the 'P' word. Not only would it be an imaculate conception - but I'd be getting divorced (had DH 'done' many moons ago

Have you considered the fact that you are not eating enough for the amount of excercise you do. Your body converts what you eat to enegry but if you are burning it off faster than it can convert it then what happens is your body goes into survival mode and hangs on to everything. Maybe you should get referred to a dietician to see if you are eating enough. I know this sounds stupid but trust me. You can be eating too little.

maisemor · 24/10/2007 14:31

ROFL.

I have been told - bad news by the way, and remember just because I tell you this does not make it my fault. But just in case I am standing by the open door ready to run - that the older you get the longer it takes to lose weight.

DabblesInDarknessWithALightOn · 24/10/2007 14:31

why nto try changing your diet?

Try Atkins.

zippitippitoes · 24/10/2007 14:32

it might be more difficult but it's still possible..you will lose weight if there are no underlying problems like thyroid etc

laundrylover · 24/10/2007 14:33

Joash,

Why not ask your GP for a prescription to Slimming World (you have more than 3 stone to lose yes, so would qualify) and see if it works for you.

Worth a try - I've lost 3 stone this year and can shop in normal shops at last. I tell you when you can walk past Evans it's a joy!!!

singyswife · 24/10/2007 14:35

Can you get a prescription to join a slimming club?? I have pcos and am finding it so difficlt to lose weight. The cost of a slimming club puts me off though.

manuka · 24/10/2007 14:37

How are your 'women's hormones'?? If they're not right that will affect weight. Also how are your bowels? If your bowels and lymph system are sluggish this will slow weight loss. Fat cells store metabolic waste so if your bowels and lymph are clogged your body will not allow you to burn fat cos it will damage your organs. Have you tried cutting out bread? Also separate complex carbohydrates from protein to help digestion and only eat complex carbs at breakfast and lunch or it will be converted to fat.
cheese is also good to avoid cos its so fatty.
Do you have a yeast build up in your gut? This could cause a weight problem.
Try a qualified herbalist and a qualified colonic hydrotherapist - not someone who's just done a quick course. If you are in the North of England I HIGHLY recommend Janet Campling 07974 441 656 she is EXCELLENT.

GreenGlassGoblin · 24/10/2007 14:39

my dh has often said it takes him about 6 weeks to start loosing any weight when he begins to exercise regularly (he runs 3 times a week, but has long lay-offs due to work commitments). It may be that it's just taking your body longer to adjust than you'd hoped?

laundrylover · 24/10/2007 14:42

Yes you can get 6 weeks Slimming World on prescription if you have 3 or more stone to lose. If you are the first at your surgery to ask for this it may take some setting up....otherwise go along to your nearest group and the consultant (leader) can contact your GP for you!

Joash · 24/10/2007 14:57

singyswife - done the dietician thing many times over the years.

maisiemor - yep I am old LOL, but i already know about the age thing.

DabblesInDarknessWithALightOn - tried Atkins, made me very ill and caused kidney problems.

laundrylover - actually on thw waiting list for the diet by referral stuff, our practice has no on that cen deal with it at the moment, in the meantime, I have three friends who are attending weightwatchers and I am using their diets (which to be honest, I only ever use their recipes and guidelines anyway.

Manuka - all bodily functions normal - never tried a herbalit though, might give that one a go. I'm way doen south though ms ... In Cornwall to be exact.

GreenGlassGoblin - 6 weeks? thats quite reassuring, so I will not weigh for anothercouple of weeks and see how I go - Thanks.
