Can someone tell me why...

I have not lost any weight.
For the last 6 weeks, I have been actively attending (yes, and participating) in Aqua aerobics for five one hour sessions a week and swimming for two sessions a week (total of 2 & 1/2 hours) and have not lost one pound in weight. I am also walking four extra miles a day. All on top of my 'normal' activities.
I eat healthily, have not upped my food intake - if anything it has actually gone down.

joash, keep on going, like evryone said it simply has to come off at some point, but i would check that you are eating enough, thats why m,aybe wieght watchers or slimming world might help, with wieght watchers you have a certain number of points and you are not meant to cut out too many or you wont lose wieght, might be worth getting hold of a points guide or even counting up your calories to check how much you are eating

is there someone at your gp's that would give dietary advice like a nurse or dietician, they would be a ble to check how much you actually need to consume

Joash · 24/10/2007 16:03

Currently on 30 points of the weightwatchers diet.

ooops sorry you have tried ww then

i have just lost 3 stone in 2.5 months on cambridge diet - would you consider that?

Joash · 24/10/2007 16:10

did cambridge back in March. Lost 40llbs, but then had a family bereavement and after that i really struggled to get going on it again. Plus the only counsellor that we have for miles was bloody useless. She just arrived to drop of the stuff - never any less than a week late, and offered no support or encouragement whatsoever. She also charged me different amounts each month, so I could never budget for it properly.

OP posts:
Joash · 24/10/2007 16:12

supposed to ad another 3 points for every hour of aqua aerobics that i do - which would mean me eating 45 points a day - cannot be physically done, and that doesn't includethe extra points for the swimming. I struggle to make the 30 some days.

gingernutlover · 24/10/2007 16:12

oh god, thats awful you really need a supportive councellor for it to work for you - sorry to hear that, can recommend a lovely one in kent! IT does take ages for your body to gte used to eating real food again though, thats what my gym trainer keeps saying anyway and it has taken ages to see any results since coming off cambridge, brilliant loss of 40lbs though but i can understand that you might not want to go through that again, i know i could never do it again

ProfYaffle · 24/10/2007 16:18

personally, I've always found it hard to lose weight through exercise. I have to do a lot to make a difference, infact the only time I really lost significant amounts was when I was training for a race and was running 4x per week for an hour as well as climbing mountains every weekend. Since having kids I just can't commit that amount of time to exercise.

WW worked for me after I put on about 1.5stones when I moved in with dh then I put the weight back on when I was pg but am in the process of losing it again. Just lost 21lbs, 4 lbs to go!

McIntyre · 24/10/2007 16:44

I love swimming but it's never done anything for me in terms of weight loss. I joined a running club at the beginning of the summer and it did wonders - and I'm not talking about a marathon group here, we ran for two minutes, walked for two minutes until we could build up to about 20 minutes of running (took us 8 weeks). It can be hard on the bod, but if you have the time it may be worth a shot? I was able to lose a lot of the baby weight through this.

Joash · 24/10/2007 17:06

McIntyre - would love to do running, but have a crappy leg. I damaged my knee and ankle when I had a gastronemous muscle tear about 2-3 years ago. The walking plays havoc with it sometimes, so running is out of the question. I used to swim years ago and it's always been a good way for me to lose weight - but nothing is shifting it at the mo. The swimming is more for increasing my stamina and fitness. The aqua aerobics is supposed to burn energy - but all it does is make me even more active. I'm like a flaming mad woman for a couple of hours after and get all sorts done (at least the house, etc benefits from it ).
ProfYaffle - well done you, keep up the good work Mrs!! smile]

Do you think the weight problem could be stemming from an emotional situation such as the bereavement you mentioned? Shock and grief affects the functioning of all bodily systems especially the liver.
I think if you have tried all the conventional routes it might be a good idea to try looking at things from a different perspective.
If you can ever get some quiet time to yourself where you won't be disturbed try running yourself a lovely bath and allow yourself to spend a few moments really relaxing physically and mentally then ask the deepest part of yourself "why am I holding onto all of this weight?" and you may find your answer.
If it is an emotional issue psychotherapy is a good place to start and your doctor could refer you to someone fully qualified or, if money's an issue, to someone in the late stages of training who will use you as a case study for free. I was someone's case study and it really turned my life around.
Herbs will help on all levels to support you physically and emotionally as will accupuncture.both of these will really kick start your system.
If I were you I'd also ring Janet anyway to see if she could tell you where to look for a good colonic hydrotherapist near you to clean out your bowel and stimulate lymph flow. This will help your system to start shedding the weight and will also reveal any yeast problems that may be causing weight gain. She could also post you the recipes for liver and kidney flush which will clear out lots of waste and speed up weight loss safely. Both of these are nicer than they sound!

constancereader · 24/10/2007 18:11

At the risk of sounding a little flaky, I would suggest apple cider vinegar, two teaspoons in a glass of water before every meal. I have been doing this and I think it has helped, although cannot be sure as I have also been dieting. It is supposed to speed up your metabolism, but I found it has sorted out my bowels too (Sorry TMI!)

Joash · 24/10/2007 20:21

Manuka - no stress or emotional issues here chuck, very balanced person with plenty of time for myself.
constancereader - never heard of the apple cider vinegar, and believe me, i have absolutely no problems whatsoever with my bowels LOL.
I have no medical, emotional, or physical reasons why this weight won't start shifting. The only way it's gone anywhere was whilst on the Cambridge Diet, but I spent some months trying to get re-started on it and had just lost all momentum. It no longer worked for me.
I know all about diet and nutrition and eating certian amounts in order to get the metabolism going. However, I am convinced that it is because, even following the WW points system - I am eating a lot more than I ever have done (and it's a bloody killer to do so)and regardless of what anyone says, that is the reason why I am not losing any weight.

well i think you are eating too much..thats how i lost weight eatring a lot less and doing loads of exercise...

if i ate much more then iw ouldn't have lsot is simple as that

tori32 · 24/10/2007 21:20

Portion sizes Even healthy food in large quantities will pile the weight on. Fruit for example has lots of calories e.g. 2 large bananas = about 300 cals. Write a food diary. How much alcohol do you drink? Again lots of hidden calories. Lots of bread, potatoes (regardless of frying) can rapidly increase calories.

Losing weight is a simple equation, take in less calories than you burn off. Sometimes when you have previously done little excercise your body tones with muscle which may prevent initial weight loss. Its more likely that you are having hidden calories though. Check your drinks, coffee and tea etc, how much milk and sugar? How many cups?

ProfYaffle · 25/10/2007 09:15

That's excellent advice, portion control is where I struggle. I must be the only person in the world who put weight on doing the Carol Vorderman detox! All those yummy avocados and nut butters mmmmmmm. That's why WW works for me (the points, not the Core thingie) because it forces me to think about portion size for pasta etc

Sheherazadethegoat · 25/10/2007 09:26

i really struggled losing weight but last year i gave up bread and white pasta rice etc. reduced portion sizes and upped the protein side of things. more or less ignored fat content and calorie counting. lost weight.

you might want to try other forms of exercise as some people think swimming increases hunger and body fat.

sfxmum · 25/10/2007 09:27

you said about allowance points on weight watchers.
I never used them at all, I don't think it means you are supposed to add points due to exercise but that you can add a few.

I used to ignore that and just keep to my allowance and then at the end of the week would have a treat a small one and not using up all the bonus points

good luck

Joash · 25/10/2007 20:53

sfxmum thats my point exactly, it does say that you are allowed extra points for exercise, my pointis that I am sticking to the basic allowance for my size - not adding the extra points and still nothing is shifting.
good luck

Sheherazadethegoat doesnt matter if swiming does increase hunger - if you're not eating to satisfy that hunger.

ProfYaffle - i eat the same portion sizes ar my four year old -which is not the same size as the suggested portions

tori32 I do not eat large quantities of anything. DO not drink alcohol as I have a four year old to take care of (chance would be a fine thing)don't eatlots of bread, potatoes about once a fortnight.

No hidden calories I use 1 litre of skimmed milk a week and as I have said earlier - no sugar for around 30 years and three cups of tea a day - no cofee (cant stand the stuff).

tori32 · 26/10/2007 16:13

Joash really sorry if I offended you. Its just suggestions to think about.
I have a 21mth old but still have alcohol. This is something I know can put weight on without the calorie content being thought about. I can only suggest from experience.I wasn't suggesting that you are alcoholic Any more than I am

If you have other symptoms such as lethargy, excessive sweating, facial or forearm hair then these could point to a hormonal imbalance and need to be investigated.
Have you been checked for diabetes mellitus?
Hypothyroidism? Polycystic ovaries? These can all have weight gain attatched to symptoms.
