I need to lose weight - but I just don't want to?! Where do you find your motivation?

I am a good three stone overweight. I need to lose weight from a health perspective, from a confidence perspective, from all perspectives really.

And, when I think about it, sure it would be lovely to be slimmer, to wear my old clothes, to be less self-conscious about my belly and my double chin.

But the problem is that when it comes down to it: I like food, and I especially like sweet food! I like having a pudding after dinner. I like having a piece of cake with my coffee. It's as though I like food more than I want to be slimmer.

How do you find the motivation? I even book on for gym classes (ones I enjoy) but then cancel because when it comes to it, I'd rather remain comfy on the sofa and watch TV or continue reading my book. I just seem to have no impetus at all?!

Low carb bootcamp began last week. Take a look. I have those guys to thank for an easy 3 stone weight loss Grin

I'd highly recommend sharny & julius fit family! The Facebook group is so inspiring. Loads of successes, loads of people trying failing, trying again (me).. But the best thing I've found for motivation!

For me it was reading a lot about nutrition & health and realising the damage I was doing to my body by eating crap.. I want to be healthy and well. That’s my motivation to eat healthy, nutritious food.

you could realistically eat only 1000 cals per day. If you do that, it'll melt off you

Each to their own but I would urge anyone considering this to understand about leptin and ghrelin (satiety and hunger hormones) and the short and long term impacts on both, that a large caloric deficit creates.

Plus thermogenesis adaptation (the ways in which your body economises to reduce it's need for calories when few are available) and the short term impact on weight loss speed and the long term impact of keeping that weight off.

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as eating less = quicker loss = long term lower weight. I wish it was but (like with everything) there is a price and it's worth understanding that price before you take the prize.

My motivation has been my wedding dress, the fear of being chunky on the day has really worked!

I’ve lost a stone and a half and am losing about 1/2 pounds a week and for the first time in my life feel like I’m in control of my weight. Cravings have gone, I still have the odd treat and don’t beat myself up over it.

I tried every diet in the book. Joe Wicks, slimming world, low calorie, weight watchers, keto. The problem is the ones that make you lose fat quickly make you lose muscle quickly making your metabolism free fall so you eventually eat less and less, feel crap and stop losing weight. Keto was actually the best at ‘resetting’ my body. Doing a couple of weeks really helped me recognise when I was hungry and it stopped making me crave sugar.

I hired a PT whose trained in nutrition and it’s the best thing I could have done. I eat high protein now and exercise 5 days a week- I eat more than I ever have on a diet but my body is burning it off. Expensive but I couldn’t recommend it more.

I'm feeling really demotivated and unhappy with myself too. I used to be into fitness but got a knee injury last year that's ongoing and has prevented me from doing anything since.

Exercise has always been how I kept myself on track with general motivation, healthy eating and stress management. I've been WFH during lockdown and dumped a load of weight on. I feel horrible and unhealthy inside and out, dumpy, frumpy, demotivated in most aspects of life most days and addicted to food to cheer myself up. My lovely work wardrobe has been untouched since March and I've no idea when my office is reopening, so I've got no motivation to fit back into it!

I feel exactly the same as you OP - I hate my body and being fat but apparently not enough to stop eating so much! Sometimes I find myself eating (especially in the evenings after my dinner) and I'm not even hungry, I just can't settle until I've had that bar of chocolate or packet of crisps.
Every now and then I'll get a burst of motivation, it lasts a few weeks and then the weight loss slows down and I start to miss the sugary stuff. I had my 2nd baby 3.5 months ago and I promised myself I'd finally lose the weight after he was born. I just feel so lazy!

Intermittent fasting is working for me although I have plateaued a little at the moment. For me just making a small start helps me get on track gradually.

You can still have the pudding, just not every day. You can still have the cake...just not every day.
