Joe Wicks 90 day plan hasn't work for the second time round.

I've been doing joe wicks' 90 day plan for a while.

I started in April and finished in July. And at the end weighed 8lb heavier then when I started. After kicking up a fuss and endless unhappy emails to the "Support heroes". They sent it to me a second time, free of charge.

I've just finished my free second go at his plan. Followed it to the T and I'm now fatter and I weight a st heavier then when I started in April. I go out hiking and walking and do his exercises 5/6 times a week atm. So I'm active. Yet instead of weighing 9st like I wanted by October, I weight 12st 5. I started at 11st5. So as you can tell I'm not happy.

Surely this isn't how his plan is meant to work.

My mum has said to me at the start of the second go: "if it doesn't work this time round then move away from Joe Wicks as it obv didn't work and isn't for you"

Im thinking about going to Greg Wallace' Showme.fit plan. Or back to Slimming World.

I'm just at a loss. I feel fat currently and although feeling stronger. I'm not happy with how I look. And all I got told by the SH is "trust in the plan". And i can't if it's made me gain weight.

I know I know a lot of people have done well and I'm happy for them but what about people like me who haven't done so well on his plan.

Thanks x

It really is about the deficit. I'm not 'overweight' at all, but I'm carrying my weight on my stomach, which isn't great for my health. I've cut down on my carbs slightly (choosing an omelette instead of a sandwich, only having one spoon of rice rather than 2 at dinner, etc.) and I've already dropped about 1kg.

The example snacks don't sound all that great, tbh.

A calorie is not just a calorie. Every calorie has a differing effect on the body and that in turn impacts its fat burning capacity. I would never say calories don’t count but it’s certainly not as simple as calories in, calories out, move more and all the other trite nonsense that people trot out.

You need to eat in a way that keeps your insulin flat across the day. For many people this looks like low carb food and at least 16 hours fasting per day.

SORRY OP, that was my bad! I just saw that you did put your weight in there. I missed it. You should def have lost on the plan and seems unlikely that it’s all muscle.

I’d ditch it if I were you. MFP and a pedometer is my solution but obviously there are lots of other diets out there too. Good luck!

Thank you for your kind message. I think I've figured that this plan isn't for me. I've got nothing against the plan. But I'm going to try something else. And I was overweight before so I don't understand it either. And I agree with the HIIT thing. My mums had awful trouble with her hip these 4 months since she started his plan.

No, not all calories are the same or have the same effect on the body. However, what all diets have in common is that they create a caloric deficit and this deficit causes weight loss. Few people defy the laws of physics to the extent that calories in vs calories out doesn’t work on their bodies. Some diets may be easier to follow because they promote satiety and low carb falls into this category. However, the science suggests that low carb has no better long term success rate than other diets, suggesting that it has no magic properties beyond inducing a state of caloric deficit.

FOKKYFC · 31/08/2020 20:55

As the saying goes, you can't walk away from a bad diet. Which isn't to say you have a bad diet per se, but may well you're focussing far to heavily on the exercise element and neglecting the 'food bit'. I can only think that your portion sizes are bigger than you perhaps appreciate.

Low carb helps with a myriad of metabolic health issues so I don’t think I’s like any diet and I do think it’s much more sustainable than low cal or low fat as you actually feel satiated as you’re eating real food.

I know the line from the skeptics is that the only reason low carb works is because you’re in a calorie deficit, thus any diet that gives you a calorie deficit is as good. The science shows that fasting alongside low carb keeps your basal metabolic rate high plus has the advantage of preserving your lean muscle mass. Pure calorie deficit over time causes your basal metabolic rate to shrink alongside your lessening calories. So many people get to a point where they’re hardly consuming any calories per day as their body is conserving energy output. I think this is why exercise ends up being touted as the be all and end all as it’s the only way to be able to eat a decent amount of food as you need to work it off.

On low carb my partner and I have shed a stone each and been as sedentary as a sloth. My DP has lost a stone in three weeks and now has a BMI of 23 and a metabolic age three years under his real age. I still have a way to go as my loss is so much slower (possibly due to peri). To this end I will start exercising come September but I’ve never eaten so well and never felt so good. So for me at least it’s sustainable.

Pota2 · 31/08/2020 21:31

If you’re coming up to peri-menopause (or at any age actually) being ‘sedentary as a sloth’ is really not a good thing to aim for. You will be losing muscle as well as fat and you already lose muscle every decade after 30 so it’s good that you are going to start exercising again.

Lockdown was certainly not kind to me that’s for sure. I’m looking forward to being free again once the kids are both at school!

At 27 I'm definitely not menopausal... but I know that Lockdown certainly hasn't help anyone... hoping that next year life will go back to normal.

I've just had a look at the JWP and it does seem to be mire about toning and fitness than weight loss abs is a long term lifestyle change. It's a lot of food from what I can see. I'd be really pissed off if I'd gained significant weight though. I've found 1250 calories and 16:8 is working great for me alongside being more active in general. I've lost about a stone in 10 weeks. I might look at HIIT to tone up though.

newnameforthis123 · 31/08/2020 23:49

OP how many calories are you having a day?

JessJonesJumps · 01/09/2020 07:20

Did your mum lose weight following the plan? Also how often do you weigh in? I'm wondering why neither you nor the people who run the plan noticed that you were gaining rather than losing.
A lot of male PT weight loss plans are trialled on men and don't take into account hormones, women's cycles, etc.

JessJonesJumps · 01/09/2020 07:30

On your previous thread, you said you lost inches. If the JW plan is about being healthy and fit then it's not necessarily about dropping to 9st if that isn't a healthy weight for you.

wowfudge · 01/09/2020 09:35

How tall are you OP?

CodenameVillanelle · 01/09/2020 10:34

I dropped inches when I started working out but also gained body fat as I was eating in a calorie excess. One without the other isn't really sufficient.
Bloomburger · 01/09/2020 10:47

Stop eating processed food, count your calories after working out how many you should be having and start the 30 day shred.

After you've done the DVD for 30 days buy another one of GM DVDs or start couch to 5k and keep it up.

Stop starting stupid diets and plans that don't work and when you stop them (or in your case during them) you don't lose weight.

Health and weight loss and maintenance is a long term thing not something you dip in and out of because it just fucks up your metabolism and you end up needing fewer and fewer calories each time you start a new 'plan'.

Most of the JW meals are really high in calories and fat when you dig deep into it.

Well I've gained those inches back since restarting the plan plus gained another 7lb which takes me to + 1 stone and gaining a clothes size from a size 12 to a now size 14 . I'd give anything to fit into all of my clothes I've still got in my draw again. And most of them are a size 10. And I was only a size 10 nearly 2.5 years ago.

Personally even 10st (instead of the ugly 12.5st that I am) would be better than what I am. And at 5'2 I look at too. I feel so fat and unhappy all the time. I just want to be happy with my weight and body and how I look.

And even my mum said there absolutely no point in buying the same clothes in a bigger size when you could loose weight and fit into them again. As well as being happy with your weight.

It doesn't happy that I've developed pre diabetes from gaining weight. If I haven't got diabetes already. So there's a big reason to why I want to loose 2st.

JessJonesJumps · 01/09/2020 14:44

This plan obviously isn't working for you. I'd suggest joining one of the threads on here eg low carb or fast800 or lose 7lbs per month. They're all very friendly and supportive.
I'd also recommend forgetting about what your weight was 2.5 years ago. Your life and your lifestyle have obviously changed since then so you need to find something that works for you just now.
