Starting my running journey whilst morbidly obese

Frustratedandworried · 06/07/2020 13:11

Today I start my running journey in an attempt to become healthier and set a better example to my kids.

Start weight: 239lb Blush
Current weight: 222lb
Height 5ft 4

I am super unfit, I pant and sweat walking up stairs, and currently cant run at all so its going to be quite the journey.

Today I walked the 5k route I intend to be able to run at some point. It was a steady paced walk, I sweated lots and it took me an hour Blush I came home and cried then realised its 5k more than I did yesterday so pace shouldnt matter!

If anyone else wants to join me and start walking / jogging / running please say hello and keep me company Smile

Great work @Frustratedandworried and you too, @slalomsuki !!

Ok, after yesterday’s attempt, I revised my plan. I am going to try and do 6 x 2.5km walks this week (instead of 3 x 5km) to try and build up general fitness. I am going to pretend what someone else said is true, and that my body/joints need time to develop to the new movement and weight bearing to prevent injury. So actually this is a smart tactical retreat in order to gain ground - and not at all because I was like an elephant wading through treacle yesterday.

So I did my 2.5km today. Knees hurt and I am a bit stiff all over. But the endorphins are starting to kick in and I am feeling more positive about it all. Anyone else?

bluefoxmug · 08/07/2020 13:15

that's pretty cool op
good luck
make time between runs to recover and take it slowly.

Redcrayons · 08/07/2020 13:23

Well done, OP. Big improvement in pace with even just a little bit of running. Once you’re fighting fit I think you’ll easily get to a 30 minute 5k.

Logging with MFP is definitely a good idea. I always always put weight on when I stop doing it. I’m a grazer so I really need to watch myself.

And don’t be tempted to eat back the exercise calories.

bluefoxmug · 08/07/2020 13:28

I'm doing c25k with the dc (lockdown pe substitute)
we have just now added intervals. omg the pain. but those are apparently good for improving speed.

Frustratedandworried · 08/07/2020 14:16

I am def trying to be aware of avoiding injury etc... mostly because today the small jogs I did left me literally gasping ...I was panting for ages and I'm fairly certain others in the woods thought I was some kind of weirdo they could hear before see

Yes to avoiding eating back the calories too .... tempting as it is Grin

Currently I'm on 1200calories a day as OMAD because of thyroid / pcos / insulin resistance issues this is what seems to work best for me in terms of not being hungry vs feeling massively restricted

I sound like an old diesel lokomotive when I try to keep up with dc Grin

8Track · 08/07/2020 19:16

@Frustratedandworried Bloody brilliant woman!! Oh yes, I agree with the puffing and huffing - I just turn my music up and pretend that noone else can hear me! I'm just back from Week 1 Session 2 of the Cto5k. Drizzly but enjoyed it! I'm slower than a slow thing and need to figure out how derive actually travelled...but I have certainly been lapping myself on the couch (with a beer, where I would have been otherwise!)

Can I ask why so many people are measuring themselves in pounds rather than stones (or kilos)? I can't be doing with dividing all those numbers by 14 Confused

bluefoxmug · 08/07/2020 19:43

I use kg, can do stones
pounds sound scary - too many numbers

slalomsuki · 09/07/2020 10:20

I prefer pounds as it goes down quicker and is motivating when you see the loss get to double figures etc. Although it's a long time since that's happened.

However just done another 2 miles or 3.2k. I can't run at the moment and probable not for a long time. I have a treadmill at home which was bought a long time ago but has been put up in the dining room. My daughter has used it through lockdown and has seen a vast improvement so it's now down to me to make use of it.

Frustratedandworried · 09/07/2020 14:25

I use lbs just because it's what I've always used Blush

Today has been tough. It's a rest day and I'm super stiff. I've stretched lots and had a bath with epsom salts to try help.

Another 5k tomorrow am then 2 days off

I can recommend taking magnesium supplements after a run.

Frustratedandworried · 09/07/2020 18:23

Oooh I shall get some! Thank you!

I have PCOS too. I had bariatric surgery 8 years ago but 2 stones have crept back on. I ran when I weighed 17 stone! It was very slow but I did it. I did the Royal Parks twice and it took me 4 hours each time! Again I was slow but I did it! I am now going to get back into it but just for health now. I will never be slim but I can be more healthy than I am at the moment.

Oh and I bought a t shirt from amazon that says 'Slow runners make fast runners look faster, you're welcome!'. It's my fave with my finisher t shirts.

Frustratedandworried · 09/07/2020 21:11

That tshirt sounds awesome Grin

You should be really proud of yourself for the running, I'm now working on my confidence in myself

I run/jog around a cemetery which sounds strange but I don't get bothered! Funnily enough though even if I run in a busy park no one looks or says anything as they are busy doing their own thing. I put my music on and just get on with it! 8 minutes is my difficult point once past that I can run for hours.

When I first started I hated it so I would set targets eg run to that tree then walk. Run to the rubbish bin then walk. If I did a bit further it felt great!

slalomsuki · 10/07/2020 17:41

No walk today as my hips were killing me and had lots of running around in the car to do. Will do some over the weekend and might go out later for a stroll with the dog.
Had a bit of a blowout late lunch but I'm sure that will do me through to tea and beyond now so not too worried.

Susan1961 · 10/07/2020 17:55

Hi, I need to shift a couple of stones, I found a phone walking app today that I entered my height, weight, goals etc. into. Then started with a fifteen minutes walk, it's motivating as it breaks the walk down into slow, moderate & fast paced blocks.I enjoyed it. It also counts steps. Think I'll sleep like a log! I also watch videos of slim women for motivation.

Frustratedandworried · 10/07/2020 21:14

Well done for the walks today! I missed today as DC were having a difficult morning but waking with a friend at 7am tomorrow to get in my final 5k of the week!

You’ve no business whatsoever to be crying! What a fantastic achievement. Keep it up and forget jogging, you’ll be running it this time next year.

Well done OP 😊

You're doing fantastically well.

Musicalmistress · 13/07/2020 22:03

I started C25k 12 weeks ago at 299lbs. I completed all the runs but nowhere near 5k and have been running/slow jogging 3times a week since then. I've lost 7lbs so am still working on my weight but I'm amazed that I can now run 5k, it takes me 50mins but it's also amazing that I can run nonstop for 50mins!
You've made a fantastic start well done! We CAN do this 💞
