What can I snack on that’s not sweet?

When I diet I feel that I can do meals really well.

But I can’t think of snacks that are anything other than fruit or yoghurt!

Then I end up eating too much sugar (from the fruit and yoghurt) and it’s not even filling. And I don’t even fancy sweet snacks anyway, I only eat eg an apple because I can’t think of anything else to have.

Help! What can I have for snacks that’s not crap and not fruit or yoghurt?

Olives
Gherkins

Hazelnutlatteplease · 26/02/2020 22:04

Popcorn (savoury)
Some packets of crisps depending on your diet
Small amount of nuts.
Oven cooked chickpeas Jack monroe style
Chicken

Oh! I should add:

  1. I can’t eat bananas (wish I could as I feel like they’d solve all my problems).
  2. I have a lot of salad/veg for meals so wouldn’t really fancy eg cucumber sticks for a snack as I’m likely to have already eaten cucumber 4x a week with meals and will get fed up at the sight of it!
  3. The meat I’m eating with meals is mostly chicken or salmon.

Yes! Olives! Bloody love olives!

Will add nuts to my shopping list @Hazelnutlatteplease I wonder if there’s any I should/shouldn’t have while I try to eat more healthy? ....honey glazed peanuts are probably out 😂

Sugar free jelly?

floppybit · 26/02/2020 22:09

I love olives and nuts but have to syn them on SlimmingWorld, I miss snacking on them. Got some low calorie coconut and vanilla popcorn from Aldi earlier and that's delicious

Pipandmum · 26/02/2020 22:10

Small amount of nuts, avocado on toast, bread sticks, baked veggie crisps, small bowl of soup, apple, apple with a bit or peanut butter, orange....

floppybit · 26/02/2020 22:10

I've found a salt and vinegar rice cake really hits the spot if I want something crunchy and savoury

Ylvamoon · 26/02/2020 22:11

Almonds! They are actually a great help you with weight loss.

pinkmagic1 · 26/02/2020 22:12

Wasabi peas.

eddiemairswife · 26/02/2020 22:14

Why do you need snacks?

buckleten · 26/02/2020 22:15

Mini babybel lights are only 40 calories each, I love them!

RoomR0613 · 26/02/2020 22:16

Don't snack. Have a big drink of water when you feel the snack urge. Then you can use the calories you didn't eat snacking to have chips instead of cucumber some nights.

RedRed9 · 26/02/2020 22:16

Oh god I just looked up the oven roasted chickpea recipe and it involves skinning the bastards. Let’s hope they’re worth it!

Almonds are the worst of all the nuts (unless they’re in a cake) in my opinion. But I will try to learn to love them. Thanks @Ylvamoon

Sad news about the olives @floppybit but I’ll try some salt and vinegar rice cakes.

Pickled onions are only 10 calories per 60g.

stclair · 26/02/2020 22:20

Those skinny laughing cow cheese triangles with a piece of ham wrapped around. Filling and tasty!

RedRed9 · 26/02/2020 22:23

@eddiemairswife and @RoomR0613 I understand where you’re coming from.

I don’t need snacks most days but I find if I get hungry/low energy and dinner is still a long way off then
a) I get heartburn and
b) I start thinking about food wwaaaayyyyy more than I’d like to. I’d like to just get on with my day without starting to negativity obsess over food. I find that having, for example an apple, helps that.

But I’m bloody sick of fruit! (And don’t always fancy sweet things like an apple.)

The only one I can remember from my calorie counting days are Marks and Spencer gefilte fish balls. Pretty much calorie free - ‘eat hot or cold’, but hot much better

Alwayscheerful · 26/02/2020 22:39

Celery
Hummus
Olives

Wilmalovescake · 26/02/2020 22:41

Carrots and hummus
Oatcakes
Babybel lights
Snack a jacks
Cup a soup
Veggie spring rolls- m&s do some that are only about 70 calories!

HoneysuckIejasmine · 26/02/2020 22:59

Hard boiled eggs, ham, cooked meats. Pickled things like gherkins or onions. Breadsticks.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 26/02/2020 23:00

Sprout your own chickpeas, they're incredibly moreish!

I love my silicone microwave popcorn maker, you don't need to add oil or anything else apart from a bit of salt.

Dried fruit? See if you can find dried strawberries, mango, pears, cherries etc.

Eggs! Boiled with salt and pepper on them. Scrambled on toast. Poached.

MiniGuinness · 26/02/2020 23:03

Roasted kale if you have a crisp craving.

Leanne1191 · 27/02/2020 15:35

Eggs? Boiled or poached or even scrambled?
You can also get them extra light cheese triangles too.

RoyalChocolat · 27/02/2020 20:10

Protein is your friend! I mainly snack on ham, cheese and raw carrots.
