Too scared to do starting weight!

Help!

Need to lose quite a significant amount of weight & the last time I was weighed was over a year ago at hospital. My weight was a huge shock, but I've definitely put on since then, and now I'm terrified of weighing myself.

Why? MH problems & me hoping my depression about my weight will spur me on has never helped. ED & scared the emotional "fuck it" eating will kick in. Plus, shame, guilt, disgust.

Also - if I do do my starting weight, how often is best to weigh thereafter? Keep reading that daily is best way to keep really hood eye on it.

I've been reading a current AIBU about how ppl have lost weight & it's been helpful as I get myself so confused, then don't do anything.

Any help, support, advice, tips greatly welcomed!!

Don't weigh to start off with. Measure your inches (waist, thigh, bust etc). Totally understand what you mean but don't let it stop you from your goal. Good luck to you!

GymSloth · 29/12/2019 23:42

You don't need a starting weight.
You could do measurements instead maybe?
Or if you really want to know what your starting weight was (so that in the future you can say 'I lost x stone') could you stand on the scales with your eyes closed and get a trusted friend/partner to write it down? That way you don't need to look at it now, but could in future if you wanted to?

Maybe you would be best off focusing on positive changes? My new year's resolution is to lose some weight too. I've decided to focus on making positive changes to be healthier - i.e. cut out alcohol and sugar, exercise 3x a week, 10,000 steps a day etc.

Good luck!

cricketmum84 · 29/12/2019 23:48

Do it.

But hold it in your mind that you will never ever see that number again x

QueenOfOversharing · 30/12/2019 00:15

I will definitely do measurements. That's a good idea.

I'm liking the idea of a friend noting the weight - only person I could ask is my DS(21), but the poor kid doesn't need to be traumatised by that! 😂

Good point about keeping in mind it's only time I'll see that weight... I need to think on this.

Thank you for your advice!

Will the local slimming world (etc) or nurse at the doctors surgery weigh you say monthly? Ask her to keep you blind but tell you what weight loss you've had? I did this at slimming world before

Egghead68 · 30/12/2019 10:01

If you go to Boots the machine will print your weight on a paper slip (like a receipt) which you can pocket without looking at it. I think it costs 50p.

QueenOfOversharing · 30/12/2019 12:10

@cricketmum84 ooooh that sounds good. I need a place to hang out with like-minded folk.

OP posts:
QueenOfOversharing · 30/12/2019 12:14

@custardbear hadn't thought of that. I could ask if nurse at gp surgery could do it - I'm sure they'd be happy I was trying!!

@Egghead68 oh I had forgotten about those machines.

Only thing is, when I weigh I get so fixated on being naked (I won't even wear glasses) & not having eaten. I know it's ridiculous!! When I did lighter Life a few years ago at first I was upset at weighing "in clothes"... as if they weigh a stone!! 😂

OP posts:
HB2019 · 30/12/2019 12:36

What about weighing in a unit that doesn't mean as much to you? So if you don't like the sound of stone and pound try kg? Or just pounds. I imagine your home scales will do all three, then it's a case of will power to not calculate the conversion. I think when you're down the line and feeling great you'll be sad at not knowing what that starting number was.

Absolutely don't weight daily, I'd try once a month? That'll take willpower too though.

QueenOfOversharing · 30/12/2019 12:44

@HB2019 funny you should suggest that, as my weight at Hospital was done in Kg - meaningless to me, but I roughly figured it was bad! I'm just scared of how much more it might be. But I think you're right about that starting weight being important once I get going.

QueenOfOversharing · 01/01/2020 09:51

Braved it. Starting this year knowing what I have to do. I had been kidding myself it wasn't this bad, but the reality is right in front of me. Weighed in Kg & am not going to convert it until I lose a bit & feel I can handle knowing.

I hugely overweight and refused to weigh myself for years but knew from clothes size that I was dramatically increasing. I joined Slimming World so I'd have somebody to hold me accountable and to have a consistent weigh scale. I've lost a very significant amount but do think that it's not for every but there are certain things that do work for all.

Always wear the same type of clothes for weigh in.
Use the same scales every time. Preferably static ones like boots etc.
Don't focus on numbers, focus on the feeling and the measurements.
Have a picture of yourself now (it may be a horrible thought at the moment) so you can use it to motivate yourself.
Honest food diaries can really help you spot your own 'triggers'

Good luck with your journey x

QueenOfOversharing · 01/01/2020 10:45

Thank you @pinkyboots1 I weighed myself at home - so scared that I need to be naked!! But it'll help me track easily on same scales.

I'm starting with IF 16:8 (ideally) & low carb - plus signed up for 14 days of Noom - it's a coaching app. Thought I'd try it as I'm such an emotional eater.

If you're weighing at home then make sure you mark out exactly where your scales are... it sounds odd but if they're not in exactly the same place each week then you can find they give a false reading. It's a scared journey but it'll be worth it x

QueenOfOversharing · 01/01/2020 12:24

@pinkyboots1 I did exactly that - sit them in line with edge of bath.

Thank you @pinkyboots1 & @HB2019

Harness all this fantastic power and determination and use it to motivate yourself forward ... you're doing great

Too scared to do starting weight!
QueenOfOversharing · 02/01/2020 09:29

@pinkyboots1 love that quote! My mantra at the moment is "nothing changes if nothing changes".

Next week I'm starting back in the gym (hoping by 6th all the newbies will have got bored 😂😂) - interestingly, working out makes me eat less naturally.

Today's plan is to do a food shop - just meals til Monday - so I'm going to think of meal ideas & healthy snacks.

OP posts:
pinkyboots1 · 02/01/2020 15:23

I've been to weekly weigh in and done my food plan and shop.. I'm now going a bit of bulk cooking.. you're sounding super motivated. Well done Smile
