Oh blimey - I've just earned myself a whole load of chocolate, I reckon. Single-handedly saved our house from being flooded - our house is lower than the road, and when it rains, the road can get very full of water. So there's a huge puddle over half the road, and people whizzing through it, creating a huge tidal wave that comes up the pavement and down our drive. I had to back my car up to the corner and leave it mostly in the road, with its hazards flashing, then I unblocked the drain (that wasn't helping the flood) and stood there like a mad woman, with a bit of pointy stick I'd found to help unblock the drain, blessing my ridiculous bright pink waterproof for being so visible. Made most people slow down enough that they didn't create the wave. I think the rain's died down again now, but I'm keeping an eye on it, just in case.

WigWamBam · 21/07/2007 11:47

Oh crikey, Jackie

This rain's been dreadful again; our garage was flooded but thankfully the doors to the house are higher than the garage so the house is OK. Got completely drenched (twice ) getting dd to school and back yesterday, it takes an hour get there and back so every inch of me was soaked to the skin, my feet were so wet I thought I might start quacking, then had to listen to dh complaining about how difficult it was to deal with flooding in his nice, warm, dry car. My heart bleeds ...

And this morning we've had to sit for an hour at the emergency GPs as dd has (yet another) urine infection. She has the works - blood in her wee again, the lot. Dh then complained bitterly because he's now going to be ten minutes late for a party he's going to. I'm about ready to poke him in the eye with a blunt instrument, he's being a real pain in the arse at the moment. At least he gets to go to the party ...

Grrrrrr

OP posts:
JackieNo · 21/07/2007 11:52

Oh your poor DD, WWB. This has been on and off for ages now, hasn't it. And grrr at your DH. As you say, at least he's getting to go to a party. Hope you 2 can do something nice together to cheer yourselves up while he's at the party.

GLad your house was OK, even if your garage was flooded. I think we got away lightly - I went to buy breakfast at the bakery in the next village, and it's much worse there - people were talking about houses being under 3 foot of water, and someone opeing their front door and having a river of water coming out of their house. Poor things. We've been flooded twice here - not deeply enough to damage furniture, but enough to need to replace the flooring downstairs both times. It's horrible.

WigWamBam · 21/07/2007 12:04

Sounds like there's been a fair amount of damage everywhere. SIL's cellar has flooded and she's gutted - she spent ages a couple of months ago cleaning it all out and decorating it to use as a cool place to sit and chill in the summer, and it's ruined.

Dd and I have been birdwatching in the garden, and we're going to make some cakes (I promise not to eat any of them!) and get the paints out in a bit. I had intended to take her out for the morning, but with her not feeling well and with it peeing it down, I think we're better off inside.

She's very prone to urine infections but we keep being fobbed off - the paed is insistent that she doesn't have infections, it's just local soreness caused by her wearing a nappy at night time. Which is total cobblers - she does get soreness, but she also gets infections, and we are bright enough to be able to tell the difference! Screaming when she goes to the loo, and having to go every twenty minutes but only passing a dribble at a time, is a lot different to just feeling sore around her bits.

Anyway, the GP this morning tested her urine and it's definitely infected so she's on mega doses of antibiotics yet again What a shame this didn't happen on Monday so that the paed would finally believe us!

The one consolation is that she finally had her scan on Monday last week and it was clear - no reflux, no stones or anything.

Dh is being a complete prat at the moment; this is just the icing on the cake. I'm actually quite glad he's out of the house today!

OP posts:
JackieNo · 21/07/2007 12:45

Your poor SIL. I think if you make cakes, it's very difficult not to eat some. But I know it's an all or nothing thing often - easier not to start at all.

Glad DD's scan was clear - poor her being on more ABs though.

Even though it's dry and sunny here, water's just started bubbling up from the manhole cover in the road again, so we won't be able to flush toilets/do washing till it dies down, as there's a valve in our front garden to stop it all backing up into our house which also stops anything flowing out to the sewerage system. So fingers (and legs) crossed for us that it dies down soon. And I hope it stops raining for you too.

WigWamBam · 21/07/2007 13:33

Has the water died down yet? Good excuse not to do the washing-up

Dd has dropped to sleep in front of CBeebies; she was up at 6 this morning because she was sore, and she's really tired now.

We have made a walnut cake - which I don't like, so I'm safe from that one. Dh will have that (although he doesn't deserve it).

Unfortunately we've also made an apple cake ...

OP posts:
JackieNo · 21/07/2007 13:59

You domestic goddess, you. Poor DD. I hope she feels better after a nap.

Water still bubbling up - shouldn't cause a major problem, as it's just going down the storm drain, but it's a pain, from the using water point of view.

I think we're going to Macdonalds for lunch. DH is here, though he was supposed to be en route to the US by now - got to Heathrow yesterday, on the way they emailed him to say his flight was cancelled, spent 5 hours waiting there to try to re-book a flight, and ended up hiring a car and driving home at 10.30. Nice to have him here though.

JackieNo · 21/07/2007 14:00

OH yes - and I don't need an excuse not to do the washing up. Luckily I ran the washing machine and dishwasher this morning, before it started.

WigWamBam · 21/07/2007 14:12

MaccyDs

Shhhhh ... don't let the Food Police hear you say that ...

Will he be able to reschedule his flight, do you think?

OP posts:
JackieNo · 21/07/2007 14:15

Yes - re-booked for tomorrow afternoon (though I guess it's likely to be complete chaos at Heathrow).

Just seen 2 green woodpeckers in our garden.

WigWamBam · 21/07/2007 14:18

Oh - dd loves green woodpeckers! She'll be very jealous.

She always keeps an eye out in the church yard as we go to school, they were nesting in there and we've seen them quite often.

OP posts:
JackieNo · 21/07/2007 19:29

Oh no - today just gets worse - water still bubbling up in the road, therefore we can't use water/flush toilets etc. So we had Domino's pizza for supper, on bits of kitchen roll to save on washing up. Look, it's a national emergency, OK.

No idea how long this it going to go on, or where we can go for a wash/shower. Everywhere around seems to be flooded. And they say it's likely to get worse over the next day or 2.

WigWamBam · 21/07/2007 19:46

Oh no - that's grim.

I really hope it eases up for you pretty soon; it sounds miserable.

Any chance that you can pack yourselves off to a hotel for a couple of nights?

OP posts:
JackieNo · 21/07/2007 19:52

Possibly - not sure where to go. Everywhere around us is suffering worse than us. Maybe try the swimming pool, but with DD still covered in spots (albeit scabbed over ones) we might get some funny looks. The friends I could have asked left this morning for 2 weeks' holiday. It will sort itself out, I'm sure.

WigWamBam · 21/07/2007 20:29

Oh, don't worry about the funny looks. The spots always look worse once they're drying up, she's not infectious so stuff 'em!

I do hope it eases up for you - it's not pleasant at all.

Dh is finally back from his party ... am likely to commit murder before too long ...

OP posts:
JackieNo · 21/07/2007 20:38

Thanks WWB - it really could be an awful lot worse - I was just looking at the pictures on the local BBC website of the area - not being able to flush the toilet definitely counts as getting off lightly.

Hope you can either ignore your DH, or that he behaves himself.

WigWamBam · 21/07/2007 20:47

Dh came back via bits of Oxfordshire and said how much water there is around - he had an interesting journey to Surbiton this morning with all the flooding and could see how badly affected some places were.

I have insisted that he goes and has a bath (being as he must be so stiff from all the driving he's been doing ...) so hopefully that'll keep him out of my hair for a bit! And at least he didn't put dd to bed tonight, so it was a peaceful bedtime - it's like a battle zone once he and dd start. He's a grumpy old man, and she knows exactly how to wind him up. It's like having two 6 year olds in the house sometimes.

OP posts:
JackieNo · 21/07/2007 20:56

Are you married to my DH, by any chance, WWB? Sounds very familiar.

Can't have been a fun journey either direction though. Glad he's back safely.
