2 weeks of 800-1000 calories a day, what would you expect to lose?!

Iv lost half a pound. Half a pound! Before anyone has a go, I Know this isn’t healthy but Iv been trying to lose half a stone for 10 months and haven’t shifted it. I decided, after many reviews, to try shake that weight where people were losing loads.... I know now this was designed for those overweight... I also know now the shakes have sugar etc in them. They were high protein so I wasn’t overly hungry,, shake for breakfast and lunch and then snack of fruit or something after work and healthy evening meal I had made but generally 800-1000 calories a day. For 2 weeks. Iv lost no inches either/

I am 5foot 2 and weigh 9 stone 3.6 so the top end of BMI. I have always weighed 8stone 10 which was ok. I work in an office but walk around as much as possible, walk to work, do about 12,000 steps a day.

Iv just had a load of bloods done for investigation and I may have fibromyalgia, awaiting referral, I can not go to the gym and I can not run. I do some basic things at home, skip a little bit when I’m not hurting, do a bit of yoga where I can so I’m not burning a lot of calories so it’s all down to how many calories I eat. I have a fitbit which I know can’t alwaya be trusted but according to that I burn 2000 calories a day... in the bloods I had my thyroid checked as I was thinking about under active thyroid but they said it was ok.

I’m vegetarian, don’t eat bread, pasta or oats etc as gives me stomach ache and have lactofree milk as also upsets my tummy otherwise. Before those stupid shakes I did not add any sugar in my diet just what is in foods ie fruit but that didn’t make a difference either. I only drink water, other than one coffee first thing. Iv tried calorie counting everything each day and I’m not missing anything out.... I’m 36 but no peri menopausal signs.... I know I need to ditch the shakes and go back to normal food now. Any suggestions?

Um, on those calories I would mostly expect to lose my sanity!

The teamRH group on Facebook is very no nonsense and lots of swearing but he seems to know his stuff about nutrition

LaurieFairyCake · 16/10/2018 07:53

Well the bottom line is that you're not overweight so I'd expect your body to give you a fight and hold onto it.

So I wouldn't have expected to lose any weight. I think you're going to have more luck with shocking your body with exercise - can you swim? Do yoga a bit more seriously ?

I also don't know if fibro causes weight gain ? Or any sort of bloating?

Ilmb · 16/10/2018 07:55

Yes stomach always bloats but never got to the cause other than no wheat products and limit dairy. Fibro has been linked to stomach problems but I don’t know what or how to get rid..

Having done the Blood Sugar Diet for ten weeks I lost 2 stone (and it didn't go back on afterwards). It's a similar amount of calories to what you're consuming but real food (no sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes or rice).

If you've been dieting a lot in the not too distant past you won't notice massive results instantly but if you're consistent it does happen. I would worry about using shakes that have sugar in - perhaps try the BSD and see how you get on?

Ilmb · 16/10/2018 08:07

Ok thanks is the BSD easy to follow? Can I adapt it for my tweens? We eat together but obviously don’t want them on a diet, but I guess it would only be evening meal they eat the same as me?

I don't think you've been counting everything. I'm taller than you and not overweight. I do 1200 calories for a few days if I gain a bit on holiday etc and lose around 1lb a day for the first few days.

That said, in any extreme low calorie (and especially low carb) diet most of what you use to begin with is water.

Polpette · 16/10/2018 08:20

Really easy to adapt for the family, just give them bigger portions and throw in some rice or potatoes.

There's a thread on here for support and advice, I found it invaluable.

Because you're eating normal food and it's only 8 weeks (or more if you want) when you go back to normal eating you'll have learned some really good habits - like no snacking, no sugar cravings, eating fewer white carbs.

GenericHamster · 16/10/2018 08:23

What do you mean by top of BMI? I’m a similar height and 1.5 stone heavier! I definitely need to lose the extra but for you I would imagine you’re already in the healthy range?

Ilmb · 16/10/2018 08:25

best I definitely 100% have been hence why Iv asked on here, I literally was having a shake for breakfast and lunch, one cup of tea, one cup of coffee, an apple and then a cooked from scratch (weighed ingredients) evening meal. Plus drinking plenty of water. I think I’m broken!

Will have a look at the BSD

I would lose about 2lbs a week on 1000 calories a day, very strictly counted

Im sorry you are struggling, its just miserable

Dd is putting a bit of weight on at the moment and her diet hasnt changed, in fact its probably slightly better, but i think her CFS has ballsed up her metabolism a bit

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/10/2018 08:26

Although she does have a meal replacement drink in the morning in a desperate effort to get some vitamins and minerals in her...which is what we are going to be looking at next!

Ilmb · 16/10/2018 08:28

My metabolism is definitely messed up. My weight was always consistent until last summer, had a traumatic time and lost over 1.5 stone and was skinny, I got better and suddenly my weight was up highest it’s ever been at xmas last year and Iv been trying to get back down since last December!!!

BiscuitDrama · 16/10/2018 08:29

Maybe there’s a bit of a delayed effect? I can’t see how you’re eating so little and walking 12,000 steps and not losing weight. Maybe this week you’ll have a greater loss. I’m no expert though.

Ilmb · 16/10/2018 08:30

I know... nothing adds up. I definitely have the calories right as Iv read so many times on here people telling Others you’ve missed something, you haven’t weighed everything. Not a lot passed my lips (other than water) so I KNOW I didn’t miss anything.

limb

I know what you mean

I have an underactive thyroid, i can lose weight slowly and with a lot of effort but it just shoots back on!!

I am losing a bit of weight at the moment but although i have every confidence that i will get to my target weight (very top of my BMI) i think maintaining it may be a struggle

Still...im 50 next year and im fed up of gaining a stone every year...ive got no bloody clothes!!

Polpette · 16/10/2018 08:35

The current thread is called Blood Sugar Diet Thread 12.

I'm like you in that I'd stick to a rigid 1,200 calories a day and would not lose anything and people kept telling me that wasn't possible.

BSD basics are: stick to about 800 cals a day (surprisingly easy if you plan ahead and eat the right foods). Fruit wise stick to berries and avoid tropical fruits (too much sugar). Loads of veg but avoid root veg. Avoid white rice, potatoes and bread. Lots of people avoid rice altogether but I had brown/basmati/wild rice throughout.

First week or so is hard but then it's so so easy - the hardest part is dealing with criticism for your 'unhealthy diet' (have never been healthier or felt better!).

Ilmb · 16/10/2018 08:37

Thanks all.

Will have a look at that thread thanks. I already don’t eat rice, bread, pasta or potatoes and eat loads of vegetables. Hopefully won’t be too hard......

I’d try BSD. When I have done it I have a small portion of food and my DH has the same food but a much bigger portion.

You should be able to find an online calorie calculator to tell you what your body actually needs (give or take a little for different metabolisms). I don’t think Fitbit is reliable - mine seems to think I need about 2000 (which is allegedly the average for an adult woman) but in reality I’m 5 foot 5 and work in an office, lift weights 3 times a week and walk a lot and I need only around 1700 cals per day to stay the same weight, so your baseline cals would probably be less given that you are smaller than me.

If you undereat by 3500 calories you ought to lose a pound. I tend to lose weight in chunks rather than steadily and I don’t lose much in the first week.

What is useful about BSD is that it helps you understand how small your portions should be. I think it’s very easy to think that because you’re having something healthy you can have a lot, but that way you quickly creep up to 1400 cals or beyond and then you are not creating enough of a deficit. I should add that I find that if I have any sugar at all - beyond, say, 8 blueberries in some yogurt in the morning- I’d probably have to push my calories even lower to lose weight. Sugar really does not help me at all.

Good luck, I hope you find something that works.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 16/10/2018 08:57

I did the BSD religiously for a month and lost a stone.

It's NOT easy, not at all but it does get results.

I can eat 1200 calories a day and not shift a lb for months. But I'm peri-menopausal so think that's why.

Ilmb · 16/10/2018 09:00

I think sugar is an evil for me too... it taunts me Grin

What sort of things do you eat for breakfast? Is it the one that Moseley guy does? Do I need to pay for anything to get the info?

OP posts:
Polly99 · 16/10/2018 09:18

Yes, Moseley (or however you spell it). I bought his book (a bit pointless) and the recipe book (better as it shows portion sizes and I am bad at counting calories). Whether you’d find them any good given that you are veggie I don’t know. If you google you can get some of his recipes online - the Daily Mail ran some of them- and on the thread some
people post pics of their meals and share ideas too.

For breakfast I tend to have Greek yogurt, flax seeds and a very few blueberries. It is carefully controlled - 3 tablespoons of yogurt only, for example! Otherwise I have 2 scrambled eggs, possibly with a little smoked salmon.

Autumn101 · 16/10/2018 09:23

Does your weight fluctuate with your periods? I go up at least 6lbs in the week before my period (regardless of what I eat or limit calories to) then it literally disappears overnight.

Ilmb · 16/10/2018 09:26

I don’t have periods as I’m on cerazette so I don’t get any fluctuations.

shelly0 · 16/10/2018 09:38

I would want to be loosing around 2-3lbs a week at least other wise it wouldn't be worst starving myself lol

shelly0 · 16/10/2018 09:40

I would bother with calorie counting though I lost 3 stone over about 7 months best things as...
massively Up your protein
Drink only water through day
Green tea- I took 200mg tablets from H&B gives you leaps of energy !
Walk more
You don't need to starve yourself X
