I thought I'd got better at estimating since using mfp but that's shocked me

Because peanut butter is the work of Satan. Delicious but deadly. Once you've depressed yourself by measuring out a tablespoons worth and realising you need at least 2 per slice, it's not worth eating any more.

Ifailed · 02/08/2018 09:28

because peanut butter is a high calorific food, hence why its used to treat malnourishment in disaster areas.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/08/2018 09:32

peanut butter.

If you can get it down to one tablespoon per slice you might stand a chance of getting it down to about 400.

WaxOnFeckOff · 02/08/2018 09:33

Yep. The toast is fine but even jam or cream cheese is better. If you need the peanut butter taste then a teaspoon in a smoothie or a scraping on the toast and add a banana. DS1 goes through tons of peanut butter and struggles to maintain his weight despite eating for 2 and being a lazy article. Stupid metabolism!!

Naughty1205 · 02/08/2018 09:34

One teaspoon of smooth peanut butter should be enough per slice. Of you use smooth it's easier to spread. Let the toast cool first and less will sink into it! That'd be around 300 cals

ShotsFired · 02/08/2018 09:39

I have recently been able to sate my sweet tooth by having a teaspoon of nutella from the jar (instead of an entire cake or choc).

Could you try that for your peanut butter craving?

spanishwife · 02/08/2018 09:40

shotsfired hmm have you checked the calories on that and weighed it? A couple of spoonfuls of nutella is easily a chocolate bar or more

Notevilstepmother · 02/08/2018 09:42

Peanut butter is top of any list of foods to give to children who are underweight. It is very calorie dense.

However, it is also very filling, so it does make a good diet food in very small quantities. It’s all about portion control. I don’t believe in banning anything (except maybe stuff that isn’t actual food, like red bull drinks)

For example if you get the small Wharburtons loaves the slices are much smaller. Have 2 small slices, one with peanut butter, and one with just butter. Still nice, loads less calories. I small slice with peanut butter will still fill you up.

TeachesOfPeaches · 02/08/2018 09:42

A slice of bread from the normal 800g loaf I had was 140 calories per slice. I found that very surprising.

CocoaGin70 · 02/08/2018 09:46

Have it on Ryvita Grin.

shapeshifter88 · 02/08/2018 09:48

I find the maridian nut butters have a bit lower cals than a lot of the cheaper alternatives

spanishwife · 02/08/2018 10:15

I have a tsp of peanut butter with fruit and greek yoghurt to get my fix. I don't eat toast/pasta or any white carbs when dieting, it spikes up your insulin, bloats you and makes you hungry.

starzig · 02/08/2018 10:22

You can get powdered peanut butter that is 25kcal for 1tbsp. Never tried it though (have a tub lurking in my cupboard)

AdultHumanFemale · 02/08/2018 10:26

I was just going to say, it's the bread that is the problem. Don't have the bread, plump for a sugar free peanut butter and enjoy a spoonful.

StealthPolarBear · 02/08/2018 10:48

Excellent ideas thanks. I will start to get the small loaves again or even have it on ryvita. I would usually only have one slice bit was hungry this morning.
I was reading one of these click bait articles the other day about unhealthy fast foods and it was saying stuff like "this burger comes in at a whopping 600 calories...". And yet my 'normal' breakfast pretty much does.

I couldn't just have peanut butter for breakfast. Need something beneath it :)

A tsp is about 15g - Nutella themselves state that as 80kcal.

It's more to taste the sweetness than to have hamster cheeks bulging with gooey chocolate goodness Grin so choc bars would def be more - although lately I am well under my MFP allowance so more would be ok anyway!
(In cooler weather I have a low-cal hot choc for the same reason.)

@StealthPolarBear I couldn't just have peanut butter for breakfast. Need something beneath it smile
I meant have the toast (or whatever) and then follow it up with the PB.

@shotsfired I am with you there - skip breakfast so I can have a mini magnum for pud haha

spanishwife · 02/08/2018 12:08

@stealthpolarbear have you seen that 'cloud bread' that keeps popping up on my fb feed? I haven't tried it as bread is not a usual part of my diet but people seem really into it. Made from egg whites, no carbs

WaxOnFeckOff · 02/08/2018 12:20

I've given up breakfast too in my "only eating for 8 hours of the day" thing. Means I can also have a pud. I like a cornetto as it feels substantial for the calories.

MrsMaryMooFace · 02/08/2018 12:26

Meridian peanut butter spread on Apple slices is pure heaven Grin

AlexanderHamilton · 02/08/2018 12:27

What thickness is your bread. I swopped my breakfast scrambled egg on toast from thick to medium and its made a difference.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 02/08/2018 12:35

Peanut butter is full of good fats and nutrients, but it is very calorie dense. I usually have a couple of tablespoons of Whole Earth with two apples sliced up for dipping. This is just as filling as two slices of toast, if not more, I get my peanut butter fix and nowhere near as many calories.

WaxOnFeckOff · 02/08/2018 12:35

we all moved to medium bread at about 100 cals a slice. It's a bit floppy in the toaster but otherwise no-one has commented.

A thin bagle is about 130 and toasted with a topping is reasonable filling for not a killing in your cal budget.

One of those with a couple of slices of sainsburys "be good" bacon and a poached egg is under 300.
