I thought I'd got better at estimating since using mfp but that's shocked me

I was also shocked to find my seeded loaf from aldi was 148 calories per slice.
I had always gone on bread =100 calls perslice
So can easily see why two bits with peanut butter was 500

Milk Rollbread by Warburtons is amazing stuff. It's genuinely nice white bread, in round slices, and less than 50 calories per slice.

Unlike normal low-calorie bread, it can be toasted without turning into an explosion of dust.

delphguelph · 02/08/2018 15:28

Have scrambled egg instead.

delphguelph · 02/08/2018 15:29

PB is good for the protein though. Better than jam IMHO

FATEdestiny · 02/08/2018 16:23

Peanut butter I'd the biggest thing I am missing while dieting.

Delicious. But bloody high calorie.

Sometimes if I have enough calorie deficit in my day I have a weighed spoonful of peanut butter with apple slices to dip in it as a pudding. Lower calorie than on toast, but enough to satisfy my craving.

Carboholic · 02/08/2018 16:29

Peanut butter is full of protein and healthy fats, and will keep you satied for longer. Replacing that with sugary Nutella is a very bad idea indeed.

fishonabicycle · 03/08/2018 07:49

Peanut butter is lovely but I would only have one slice - I use smaller rye bread or a crumpet, and eke the peanut butter out with lemon curd (heavenly!).

StealthPolarBear · 03/08/2018 07:50

Yes think I need to buy the smaller loaf. Will look into some of the diet bread mention but, particularly for peanut butter, I like a decent seedy bread.
Not hungry this morning. In fact feeling quite bloated and down about my weight.

I wouldn't be too downhearted SPB. Discoveries like this are important for weight loss and maintenance, I've found. If you can swap 2 slices of bread plus PB for something like one slice plus 2 scrambled eggs that's 200 calories a day knocked out, fairly painlessly. Which might not sound like much, but adds up to roughly 20lb over the course of a year.

ErictheGuineaPig · 03/08/2018 08:21

Just have the toast and peanut butter and enjoy it! As long as it fits into your calories for the day then why not. A sustainable weight loss plan needs to allow you to have some of what you fancy without guilt.

Branleuse · 03/08/2018 08:24

Have it on celery. Its pretty good like that

bumblingbovine49 · 03/08/2018 08:34

Most medium sliced bread is around 80-100 calories a slice. Seeds add a lot of calories as does thick sliced.
I usually assume that two toast with peanut butter (thinly spread)is about 400 calories but more like 500-600 if you spread the peanut butter more thickly or if your bread is thick sliced etc.
I like my peanut butter thickly spread thoughGrin

Threehoursfromhome · 03/08/2018 09:20

The other thing about bread is the portion sizes on the packaging can be quite far out. They'll give an estimate of eg "per slice of bread (40g) 90 calories," and if you weight a slice it will be up around 50g.

I don't suggest weighing every slice of bread - that way madness lies - but doing it once or twice can be instructive. I think estimated serving sizes on packages are allowed to be up to 20% off. For most poeple it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference, but for anyone trying to work out why they aren't losing weight on a calorie counted diet, those kind of variances can add up over the weeks and months.

Branleuse · 03/08/2018 11:40

both bread and peanut butter are not good value if youre slimming. They do not fill you up enough for the calories.

There are much lower cal versions of protein and fibre that would do you better than that. Toast and peanut butter is a build-you-up food, not a slimmers food.

Branleuse · 03/08/2018 11:43

toast, i could easily put away 3 or 4 slices of toast and still be hungry mid morning

Japonicaisstillahorsygirl · 03/08/2018 11:44

OP why not just have the peanut butter breakfast option once a week. I love crisps but only have them on saturdays there’s no way I would want to never have them

QforCucumber · 03/08/2018 11:46

Peanut butter on apple slices is the best snack ever - could also work as a breakfast :)

Elledorado · 03/08/2018 13:22

I have half an english muffin (60 cals) plus a tbsn of low fat pb (80cals) for breakfast with a coffee. I love pb!

AlexanderHamilton · 03/08/2018 14:18

I find that two rounds of scambled egg on toast (made with skimmed milk, no fat) keeps me full all morning .

Naughty1205 · 05/08/2018 23:51

Note it's one tablespoon is 15g, a teaspoon is 5g.

FATEdestiny · 06/08/2018 21:56

That rather depends how heaped your spoonfuls. I know that one desert spoon of peanut butter, as it comes out of the tub (so heaped) is around 15g when I do it.

It's like the fact that I know three fully heaped desert spoons of natural yoghurt will be about 100g when I do it. Not the 30g that 3dsp should be. Which is why it's important to weight to test your portion control.
