Anyone want to give up sugar with me?

I'd like to give up sugar and need to be accountable, anyone want to do it with me and post about it here?

I want to give us sugar for health reasons and to lose the last of my baby weight.

I don't really have any rules except I'm not going to eat anything obviously sugary, cakes, biscuits, chocolate etc, but will still have things like shop bought stuff with sugar as an ingredient (ketchup etc) and honey.

If this sounds like something you'd like to do too, please come join me! Smile

Last time I gave up sugar for a while, I found that after a week everything tasted different. Even now, lots of things that I previously enjoyed just taste too sweet.

Moxiebelle · 20/04/2018 19:31

I've made myself the sugar free scones today. They were nice and my family also liked them.

pandapop17 · 20/04/2018 19:58

Today I said no to a miniature hero, a jam tart and a 99! Feel like I deserve a medal! Will of steal Grin

MuddyForestWalks · 20/04/2018 20:20

Fucked it up on day 1 Blush ate half a mini magnum. Other than that ate well, but tomorrow will have to be Day 1 instead.

Moxiebelle · 20/04/2018 20:47

Having less sugar is good Muddy. I think I need to find an ice cream alternative for summer.

MuddyForestWalks · 21/04/2018 06:31

Frozen berries blended into full fat Greek yoghurt makes a good low sugar alternative. Some people rate blended frozen bananas too.

Today really is Day One.

DontFundHate · 21/04/2018 06:40

Did well yesterday. Midday and evenings are my trigger points, think I just need the energy. But had my toddler with my all day yesterday so no chance to have anything bad! Last night I really wanted something sweet, I told myself I could have a slice of fruit loaf if I wanted something sweet, surprisingly I realised I wasn't hungry at all and couldn't face eating that much, it was most definitely a craving. Before trying to go "no sugar" I would have thought it was hunger for sure!

Hope everyone else did well. Muddy I wouldn't worry about starting over, personally I'm trying to do this as a lifestyle change so there will be the odd time I anticipate having something, but so long as say 90% of the time I stay sugar free I'll be happy

I've been low-sugar for 4 months. Previously I was a sugar-addict - I could have easily eaten half a packet of chocolate digestives in one sitting or a whole tub of Ben and Jerry's. Have lost weight and inches, but also found my appetite has reduced a lot.

WhoWants2Know · 21/04/2018 07:27

Today is really day one for me, but I'm even kind of looking forward to it.

Shadow666 · 21/04/2018 07:29

Just place marking. Would definitely like to join in.

Toomuchsplother · 21/04/2018 07:34

Can I join? I am going for reducing my sugar rather than banning myself completely. Have been doing it for about 10 days now, also trying to generally stop eating rubbish like crisps etc and I had lost 3lbs on my Wednesday weigh in.
First of 3 days felt dreadful, tired and headaches but better now.

Moxiebelle · 21/04/2018 07:37

Good luck @who are you following any kind of plan?

MollyHuaCha · 21/04/2018 07:46

Interesting. What about fruit juice?

Moxiebelle · 21/04/2018 07:47

@toomuch the only reason I am trying to reduce mine so low is I think I am very affected by the addictive quality. Despite what people say I'm still not convinced it's as addictive as cocaine but it does trigger me to binge and I will find myself eating 5 or 7 sugary snacks a day. But even so I am still eating a few items with sugar like bread and crumpets, plus fruit and veg have some too of course. But I think it's the things with a large amount that really affect you in that way of triggering cravings.

Moxiebelle · 21/04/2018 07:52

@molly fruit juice is a no for me as it is high in the natural sugar fructose which I am trying to avoid especially when it is not accompanied by it's natural fibre. So I can eat 1-2 pieces of fruit but I am avoiding all juice. If you want to read more on the evils of excess fructose try reading Sweet Poison by David Gillespie.

ThisToo · 21/04/2018 07:53

Morning - can I join you too please? I managed a week at the start of the month and felt much better (after 3 days of headaches) but then lost the plot and ate a load of chocolate and jelly beans and haven't recovered since. It's so hard!

Moxiebelle · 21/04/2018 07:56

Good luck @this you might find it easier as you recently gave up before.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/04/2018 08:09

I’ve been sugar free since January, with just one planned ‘day off’ for Easter and a couple of unplanned ‘moments’ of weakness. But basically: no cakes, biscuits, chocolate, cereal, anything with sugar in. We stopped the children having sugar too, they have ‘Sunday treat night’ when they can have it but otherwise it’s nothing although we have been a little more lax the last few weeks. We still have Christmas chocolate left.

I can only really do it if I cut out fructose too- so I have drastically reduced my fruit intake. I have 50g raspberries a day and very occasionally I’ll have a passion fruit on yogurt, or different berries. I have reduced my carb intake and cut out the starchy carbs, pasta, bread etc.

I honestly don’t miss it. Even just writing this I’m realising that the last time I ate a slice of cake was last year, and I haven’t bought a packet of biscuits this year either. (I used to eat half a packet of hobnobs waiting for the kettle to boil!)

Try it op, you won’t regret it!

ThisToo · 21/04/2018 15:25

Thanks moxiebelle I hope you are right but given it is mid afternoon on day 1 and I am fighting a strong craving for sugar, I'm not so sure Sad

Paperdolly · 21/04/2018 17:35

If you want to do this with a bit of exercise the C25K app is great and exercise helps to stop the cravings. 👍🏻

WhoWants2Know · 22/04/2018 04:04

I'm just easing myself into it by dumping the obvious biscuits, sweets, cake and ice creams, but still keeping some fruit around in case of cravings. The first side effect seems to be waking up at 3am Confused

Moxiebelle · 22/04/2018 08:27

After 10 days I am starting to find it a little easier now. I'm still having a few snacks but already feeling slightly less hungry. Just finished reading Fat Chance by Dr Robert Lustig which was interesting you can also watch some of his lectures on YouTube. I also read A year of no sugar by Eve Swaub based on her family experience cutting out sugar for a year (again it was mainly sucrose and fructose they cut out they did allow some glucose for home baking and fruit) that was ok but I felt it focused a bit too much on the sugar they did eat! They allowed themselves 1 normal dessert a month and this was described in glorious detail. But it is interesting from the point of view of her kids and dh and how they felt about it. She really made a good point in saying how sugar is often a symbol of love in our society and how can you turn down Grandma's lovingly baked Christmas cookies?
I haven't started trying to change my family diet yet. I really started this to lose weight myself and its only recently I read about the health problems related to sugar. I want to see some real benefits myself and feel confident it's the right thing to do before recommending it. How often do we read something convincing about health only for it to be proved wrong a few years later.

WhoWants2Know · 22/04/2018 11:15

That's true, and when I look up articles about it they always eventually seem to want to sell something. It's hard to know how much is hype.

I know that I lose weight easiest when I track food with MFP and stick to lower carb options. But I'm hoping that dropping the sugar will help me physically feel better.

WhoWants2Know · 25/04/2018 20:57

This is nuts. It's only been a few days and I'm not even really craving sugar anymore. My appetite as a whole is reduced, I can't finish my meals and I've lost 2 pounds!

DontFundHate · 26/04/2018 14:38

That's amazing who how long did you do it for? I'm finding it very hard going!
