Because how in the name of the holy cheeses does one loose weight at the age of 48, when nothing that used to work in the past, works anymore?

I am reasonably active and don't overeat although admittedly I do drink alcohol and have a weakness for sweets. This was never an issue before but clearly it is now. Simple I hear you say, stop drinking alcohol and eating sweets. But I have. And whist in the past I would have started noticing some change after a couple of weeks, nothing moves at the moment. In fact, I am just getting bigger and bigger.

I have extremely large thighs and I am only short so I feel really uncomfortable within myself. My only saving grace is that I don't have a fat belly.

I am a bit sick of being hungry pretty much all the time and still, it seems I need to accept that I've gone from a size 10 to a size 12 in the space of a year and I've been hungry for the most part. Well I don't want to accept that. I need to go back to a size 10 or by the end of 2018 I'll be a size 14.

Please help me.

Wow - so many inspiring stories!

Thank you everyone xx

Mid 50s here. The only thing that works now is low carbing with 5:2 fasting.

Movablefeast · 31/12/2017 20:05

Don't we all need a New Year inspiration thread to get us all going? I would love it Smile!

Ta1kinPeace · 31/12/2017 20:15

Weight loss is
90% food reduction
10% increasing exercise
there is no short cut : Eat less, move more

BUT
Its about finding a way to eat less that is sustainable for you

  • low carb
  • intermittent fasting
  • baby plates
  • no booze
there are lots of ways but the net result of all of them is that you have to bring your calorie intake below your sedentary TDEE.
CatNut2017 · 01/01/2018 01:29

Hi,
I am 48 and also in the same boat. I have been exercising with a PT 3 times a week and getting fitter but losing no weight. What has made a difference to weight loss is low carbing, high fat, high protein. I have lost a stone so far but have a lot more to lose.
I feel that I need to take action now as I do not want to end up like my mother - obese with mobility/ balance issues.

IWillSurviveHeyHey · 01/01/2018 10:35

Happy New Year everyone!
Movablefeast amazingly inspirational. Thank you for sharing. This is for your son Flowers with a wish that 2018 brings him health.
I have found this thread helpful and inspiring in equal measures and I don't care if I'm a cliche, I am starting today!!! The idea initially is to low carb, high fat, increase exercise and 5:2.
Thank you everyone!

I'm early 50s and put on a stone and a half in my late 40s. I have managed to lose half a stone but it has taken me about a year to do so. I can't stick to diets and I am not a great one for formal exercise so what I have done is reduce portion sizes and it does work eventually. I cut out most snacks and eating chocolate every day. It is hard ag first but then younreach a point when you just dont want it anymore. If i crave chocolate, i just eat a square or two. Same with meals. Over time, if you out less on your plate, you find yourself sated with the smaller portion. I now find eating a restaurant meal quite hard as the portion seems too big for me. I don't think cutting out key elements of a diet, e.g. carbs is a healthy thing to do, but I have reduced my carbs by e.g. having less potato with a meal or substituting potato with vegetables. I still have a stone to lose before I will be back where I was, but, given the relentless way I was putting on weight before, I am happy enough just to have stopped the progression.

Good luck to everyone out there in the same position.

*I'm so sorry (am nearer to 40) but REALLY??

Can you honestly not let yourselves relax a little & just BE over a size 10 when you're in your bloody 50's??

Do you think men out there of a similar age are busy starving themselves??

Do you not by now realise that your worth is based on MORE than your dress size? Why the need to be so small?

Seriously depressing thread

It's not only about looking good. Being overweight as you get older can have a negative effect on health.
I had got complacent about my weight and went to the doctor about a month ago. For the the first time in my life I have had high blood pressure. She made me jump on the scales and I came in at 13 stone 7.
The doctor just said that it was time for some changes but it was up to me.
It was a huge shock. Looking good again will be a bonus.

Yup, the guys are getting more and more aware.

At a party the other night where all of us are looking at 50 in the rear view mirror, weight management while still enjoying life was a common topic of conversation.
One of our gang is morbidly obese {BMI must be in the 40's) and there is nothing we can say to him.
The rest know that if we want to be healthy when we are old we have to moderate food intake.

DH is as strict about fasting as I am - blood pressure is his issue too.

52 - about two stone overweight. I lose and regain the same ten pounds on a regular basis.

I had my metabolism checked properly and in order to just maintain my portly (large size 14) figure, I cannot consume more than 1300 calories (assuming sedentary) so in order to lose I have to cut down to about 1100 which is bloody hard.

I am cutting out alcohol an will reduce carbs. Exercise is very limited due to disability affecting all my joints and ligaments = constant pain.

I do think that for some of us, it is arse or face. I will definitely look better at a size 10/12 but I have a friend who ages 15 years as soon as she drops below a size 12.

It's shit isn't it?

SukiTheDog · 01/01/2018 18:56

Rothbury, it’s so good to hear someone who expresses exactly, my yo-yo dieting. And now, I can’t run (my hips are shocking) though I do walk the dog every day for 1-2 hrs but, there’s not much speed involved. I’d like to lose 20lbs. It’s more than doable but, God! Where to start?

I know losing some weight will help my knees/hips/joints but when I lose it from my face and chest, I look every one of my 55 years.

Ta1kinPeace · 01/01/2018 18:59

rothbury / suki
If you try things like pilates and yoga, they will tone all of the muscles under the skin so it will sag less as the weight comes off.

There is a whole series of yoga exercises for face and neck that I try to do once a week and they have made a real difference to how I feel about my face as I age.

NB neither the yoga or the pilates will make you lose any weight, but they will make your body look leaner because toned muscle hangs on the cones so much better than flab my wobbly bits drive me hatstand

EBearhug · 01/01/2018 19:07

neither the yoga or the pilates will make you lose any weight

Depends. When I've been on a yoga holiday, I've usually come back about half a stone lighter - however, in normal life, I just can't fit in 2+ hours every day.

Ta1kinPeace · 01/01/2018 19:10

Ebear
A week yoga holiday = a week of regular exercise, healthy eating and good sleep.
Ergo a bit of weight loss.
Beer Yoga will not have the same result Wink

rothbury · 01/01/2018 19:32

Beer yoga sounds great though doesn't it? Grin

I cannot do pilates due to disability - have tried and my problems got much worse. I can do some yoga, so long as I am very careful.

I can walk sometimes, but other days every single step is painful (hypermobility) so it's all a bit hit and miss really. I just have to lose weight by cutting out calories.
