Because how in the name of the holy cheeses does one loose weight at the age of 48, when nothing that used to work in the past, works anymore?

I am reasonably active and don't overeat although admittedly I do drink alcohol and have a weakness for sweets. This was never an issue before but clearly it is now. Simple I hear you say, stop drinking alcohol and eating sweets. But I have. And whist in the past I would have started noticing some change after a couple of weeks, nothing moves at the moment. In fact, I am just getting bigger and bigger.

I have extremely large thighs and I am only short so I feel really uncomfortable within myself. My only saving grace is that I don't have a fat belly.

I am a bit sick of being hungry pretty much all the time and still, it seems I need to accept that I've gone from a size 10 to a size 12 in the space of a year and I've been hungry for the most part. Well I don't want to accept that. I need to go back to a size 10 or by the end of 2018 I'll be a size 14.

Please help me.

For eerie, read exercise.

(Think my phone has overdone things this Christmas.)

homebythesea · 30/12/2017 13:10

FOllowing this with interest- I’m 48 always have been fit and reasonably healthy but the middle is thickening and I could probably lose a stone or so to reach ideal BMI. For me it’s about long term health and still feeling attractive and well.

Before Xmas I dud 5:2 for a few weeks and this was very effective. It made me realise that being hungry wasn’t so bad really, and that I had not felt properly hungry for an age. I will be going back to this after new year

PickAChew · 30/12/2017 13:24

I'm 48 and a busty 12-14 and currently just within "healthy" bmi. Sugar is my nemesis. A piece of cake just leaves me feeling washed out and bloated and bloody hungry. Avoid cakes and pastries (which I confess I've eaten a lot of in the past couple of months with a stressful house move followed in short succession by a bereavement then Christmas) and my appetite regulates itself at fairly healthy level.

I certainly don't starve myself or aspire to being skinny and I definitely don't deliberately choose low fat options and don't need a telling off for keeping an eye on my weight. I was a stone heavier than I am now, a couple of years ago and found myself becoming horribly out of breath doing the hilly school run I'd been doing for almost a decade. I already have knackered joints so I'm quite certain that I don't want to get back there. Aesthetics are not my prime reason for keeping an eye on my weight, most of the time.

Bixg · 30/12/2017 13:27

RPPP - some of us 'oldies' still want to be fit, healthy and look good as we reach menopause.

low carb and lots of walking works for me in my 50's. It's definitely easier to lose weight when you're younger, unfortunately. I also find that lchf is very filling and I don't get as hungry when I eat this way. It's gone out the window a bit over Christmas but I'll be back on it in the New Year.

My doctor wanted to put me on statins for high colesterol which prompted me to make lifestyle changes. I've managed to reduce my colesterol levels with a lchf diet.

Ohyesiam · 30/12/2017 13:37

Look at the blood sugar diet by Dr Michael Mosley
If you can't do such low calories, up the limit. I found that by reducing carbs and keeping blood sugar stable I lost almost 3
. nothing had worked for ages, the whole low carbs thing was the missing piece of the jigsaw.
I'm 51.
I found my fitness pal really helpful

PickAChew · 30/12/2017 13:42

I like to walk lots, too. I don't have a dog but do have a teenager who likes to be taken for long walks, preferably involving pokestops, though hills and woodland seem to keep him happy, too.

And when I lost weight, last year, DH joined in and shed his own middle aged sedentary worker's paunch, too.

chocolateavocado99 · 30/12/2017 13:48

I am 46 and started excersing about 2 months ago. I don't weigh myself but have definitely lost at least a stone. My clothes are super baggy and I see a huge difference in my face.
I try to eat low carb, but have eaten bread a few times over the Xmas holiday and 2 chocolate oranges. I am ok with that, as I didn't eat any other Xmas treats!
I did Jillian Michaels 30 day shred, and then a month of kick boxing and when I go back to work next week, I will do the 30 day shred again.
I have about another stone to lose, and a holiday booked for the first week of March. I feel positive that I will get there!

IWillSurviveHeyHey · 30/12/2017 15:24

chocolate when you do the shred, do you do it every day? I do the shred about 4 times a week but haven't moved passed level 1.

I'm 51. HFLC is my saviour. I've lost 2 stone this year. I feel better, look better and behave better on LC, but can only maintain it if I allow myself plenty of fat.

Have a look at the Bootcamp threads. There'll no doubt be one starting up in the new year.

slimyslitheryslug · 30/12/2017 18:02

I'm only 41, spent all of last year trying to lose weight and just yo-yo'd between 10st 6 and 10st 10 all year which meant I was overweight all year (only 5'4") despite being hungry for much of it. I must be "better" this year (not sure how) as it is only going to get worse.
Like PP, I like to see regular losses but, actually, 1lb a month would still see me down into 9st something which would be a huge improvement.

rcit · 30/12/2017 18:05

With a lot of fucking difficulty.

What sort of alcohol do you dreink? If it’s somethign like beer then I’d say cut it out forever. Do you have mixers like coke? Again, that wants cutting out fully.

crispbuttie · 30/12/2017 18:12

Who'd have thought it - 50+ year old women actually care about their appearance. Shock

Rumpumpum - you should research diabetes risks before you make sweeping statements. The risk increases with age and waist size.

crispbuttie · 30/12/2017 18:14

I've lost weight this year by cutting right back on sugar and fresh bread.

BIWI · 30/12/2017 18:17

BTW - Advanced Search shows that this is the only thread that RumPumPumPum has ever posted on. So I think it's safe to say that we can ignore him/her.

MaudlinMews · 30/12/2017 18:23

HIT - cardio, weights, toning (10lb dumbbells).
30 Day Shred every other day. 2 mile run occassionally. Pilates.

Proper carb restriction. Good fats. High quality protein. Im roughly 5’6” & 10 stone with 22% body fat so eat 1500 calories a day (100 more if I exercise).

Its bloody hard but I want to keep my size 10 arse and not have a gut like a Bhuda.

Think of it like this. What do you want more; sugar & wine or a slim figure?

You have my sympathies.

octonaught · 30/12/2017 18:34

I'm 47, slimming world has worked. A bit yo-yoying. I've lost about 1.5 stone since June. (I don't really stick rigidly to it but it makes me more aware.)
I also notice when I make an effort to go to the gymn my shape improves. Am going to do weights more in the new year in order to improve my bmr.
I'm not slim, but it is a boost when your jeans aren't digging in.
More importantly I have a 7 yo, and I want to be fit & healthy when he is an adult.
Try & make sure you have lo cal snacks in the fridge, crudités, fruit. Pinch of Nom website is great if you like to cook

It's a struggle! I'm nearly 46 & have lost 1/2st over the last 6 months or so by:

  1. Doing couch to 5K - it has really toned me up - I now run 5K 3 x per week.
  2. Aiming for 10K steps on the days I don't run.
  3. Having fruit & yoghurt for breakfast, rice cakes with veggies/hummus/philli or soup & 1 slice bread at lunchtime. Salad/omelette/1xfishcake/stir fry/stuffed mushroom for tea.
  4. Minimal alcohol - none in House, only on nights out 1-2x per month.

I'm still overweight, and it's all gone to pot at the moment, but it works for me.

Not weighing myself helps too; I tend to react too much to the results.

Ta1kinPeace · 30/12/2017 19:15

I'm 52 and for the last 5 years have used 5:2 to let me enjoy life while staying a healthy size.

I plan to stick with 5:2 for the rest of my life
to avoid Diabetes
to reduce joint pain
to reduce cancer risk
to reduce dementia risk

and to not look too bad in a bikini while sipping fizzy wine Grin

lljkk · 30/12/2017 21:20

I like RumPum's post. It's healthy to feel comfy in your own skin.

I am 50 & female. BMI is around 21. I don't know my wt or BMI for sure & I don't try to lose weight, b/c I have a history of eating disorder.

I can't find the thread that askd today on MN what people ate. Anyway, I added mine up: 2500 kcal. High fat & high carb. 4 roses, even. Fig me, I am a happy pig. Apparently, today, I used 500kcal swimming (plus an easy game of squash). I'd lose weight for sure if I was calorie restricting to under 2k, lose it fast if under 1500 kcal.

Hippywannabe · 30/12/2017 22:25

I have just had emergency gallbladder surgery, years of yoyo dieting caused that!
Two of my wounds haven't healed yet, probably due to the fact they sit on rolls of fat.
I was terrified of having the surgery because of my excess weight.
So yes, for me in my 50s, I am doing this for better health now. Looking better will be a bonus.

NoCanoe · 31/12/2017 05:23

Sigh.
Yes. Everything in control till menopause and extra stress. I'm a pineapple. No apple or pear distinction and I feel shit.
Am I giving up? Nope.
I'm doing this for me. Yup.

NoCanoe · 31/12/2017 05:29

Just to say....I had early menopause- 45- but I kept it in control for a while but I'm now 53 and I've piled on the weight. It stops now. I hope.

If my changes don't work then I will go to doctor.
But I'd prefer natural methods for menopause.

namechange2222 · 31/12/2017 05:52

This time last year I went on my very first 'diet' as had put on gross amounts of weight due to life style change and stress reduction. I should be a size 8, I was a 12. I'm mid 50's and dabbled with low carb, no sugar etc for a couple of months. However, all that actually works for me is less calories, more exercise. Once I realised it was that simple it didn't become a lot easier. Dry January kick started weight loss as I then never really drank as much again this year. I also cut out sugar for ten months. I'm rubbish with actually counting calories but I managed to lose one and a half stone. My main meal I have at about 5pm or as soon as I'm home and I don't eat again until the following day. I'm now on track to be a size 8 again by June. The weight loss is very, very slow but steady.

standupagain18 · 31/12/2017 06:26

I've been following a low carb , high healthy fat diet for just over a year and I've lost 9kgs. The best bit is that I haven't had any problems keeping them off. I do now break the low carb rule if, for example I go out to a restaurant but then compensate the next day. My staple is a chicken soup - fennel bulb, celery, courgettes, one chicken leg, 2 breasts, fresh ginger, fresh coriandre. Chop chunky. Boil with 2 stock cubes. Eat as much as you want all day (it's actually quite filling).
I'm 49 and btw didn't give up the wine!!

IWillSurviveHeyHey · 31/12/2017 06:34

standupagain18 that soup sounds delicious actually. How long will it last in the fridge after it's cooked?

What do you eat for breakfast/lunch?

Amazing weight loss, well done! 9Kg is exactly what I need to loose.
